To sum it up:
Fallout 3 has 3 Dog - Brash, unsavoury and ugly.
New Vegas has Mr New Vegas - Charismatic, charming and classy.
Ironically these characters also sum up the respective games as far as I'm concerned. The first feels unrefined, second feels like so much more passion and love was put into it.
That's not to say I thought all of Fallout 3 was terrible but the only memorable part I remember is Tranquillity Lane perhaps because it was unique from the rest of the linear quests throughout the game. Washington was great to explore but all the boring side quests, the uninspiring story and lack of proper role-playing made me give up half way into the game. New Vegas kept me hooked throughout not just with the story and characters but with all the side quests and faction quests, some of which even tie into the story.
Also the dialogue for 3 Dog and Mr New Vegas sum up the huge writing quality differences between Bethesda and Obsidian:
3 Dog: "This is 3 Dog and welcometoGalaxyNewsRadio OOOOWWWWWWWWWWW!"
Mr. New Vegas: "It's me again, Mr. New Vegas, reminding you that you're nobody 'til somebody loves you. And that somebody is me. I love you."

This thread has the same back and forth of the Bethesda Fallout Forums where original fallout fans bludgeon the converted TES fans over the head with Fallout 1,2 &NV good while FO3 & 4 are the spawn of Satan.

3 isn't the spawn of Satan. It's just not as good as NV. Don't know about 4 since it's not out yet. Never played 1 or 2 so I can't comment on them.

You were doing it wrong, in FO3 and FONV I shut off the radio less than 30 minutes into each game once you finished the character creation, tutorial, and into. Both games have truly wonderful background music that easily surpasses the tripe on the radio.

Why does this thread still exist?
It should be a universal fact of life that NV > FO3
Don't pull the 'subjective' card.
This sh*t is as objective as it gets.
Fallout 3 is a better game than Fallout: New Vegas.

Tripe? You clearly have no taste in music sir!
(Although I agree that there was good background music and combat music. In fact New Vegas re-used most of the music from FO3 didn't it? Cheap on Obsidian...)

The real twist of all this is if there was no FO3 then there wouldn't be FONV

Actually FONV used remastered FO1&2 music

Disagree, and if Bethesda had not purchased the IP you would never have any New Vegas. Actually it was Bethesda that approached Obsidian to make a Fallout game not the other way around. Alot of people tend to forget that. Well atleast the dicussion is over now.

Aren't they the same game?
I mean you have Fallout and Fallout 2 made by Interplay, then you have Fallout New Vegas made by Obsidian as a sequel to 2, then you have the spin-off series with Bethesda made Fallout games.
Bethesda is making a spin-off series after all, it's on a completely different coast with different themes than the original Fallout games. Don't know why they are starting off with the number 3 though, it must be a reference to the game that I'm missing. Kinda like Left 4 Dead.

And without Obsidian you wouldn't have Fallout to begin with!
See where that line of reasoning gets you?
Nowhere.
Mind you.
I don't think FO3 is a bad game, and it has a ton of merits.
But FO:NV is superior by both its writing and gameplay.

Actually it would be Interplay and Black Isle, the latter formed Obsidian later on. Though i am quite sure you know that. Not trying to use reason, but saying something is objectively better without any proof is quite silly. Subjectively you can jump for joy about that game, but how can we determine if it is objectively better? I don't think its possible, i am open to suggestions however.

Objectively better as in
1) Writing is superior. It's not just "taste" it's everything about it. Hell, the silly posts with the quotes are proof enough that Obsidian understands what Fallout is far more than Bethesda does.
Then you have video-game writing which is on a different level since we have to incorporate quests, roleplay and how well gameplay/narrative segregation works.
Case in point:
Tell me I have to die "because I am the protagonist and we haven't gotten the DLC up yet" is complete and utter bullsh*t.
Also.
You could consider it a 'love letter' and I do too, but they did go out of their way to copy a FO's main plot surrounding water purification.
Seriously, the only reason I won't go on is because there's just too much to list. How about how awful your father was handled in FO3 with the way he was "disappointed" in your genocidal schemes; or just how flat out boring the Brotherhood of Steel were.
Yes, there's a perfectly good reason for their policies, but god dammit it's like the conflict was non existent.
2) Gameplay. FO:NV doesn't hold your hand, in fact, it blocks the easiest route to NV with f*cking DEATHCLAWS and gives you a crap ton amount of factions to play around with and that actually matter.
Yes, matter as in they do stuff. Little Lamplight ceases to exist and function when you're done with its quests, however when it comes to NV (even though the same happens) there is so much more to do with these people and so much more to explore. You can join them, become their enemies, or totally screw them over big time or they could screw you.
FO:NV is far more diverse, dynamic and most of all, responsive to your character. I couldn't care less about Paradise Falls or that one village where that blonde chick from Megaton came from.
FO3 is a good game, but if I were to use a stupid metaphor it would be like FO:NV is this colourful experience filled with people, character and charm whilst FO3 is this angsty teenager.
This rant could go on and on. It simply is but that doesn't mean FO3 is a bad game! No no no! In fact, I think it has some amazing moments and some characters that were worth my time listening to them like that wack ass doctor in the simulator. That whole damn quest was great and well done.
But jaysus FO:NV is pretty much one of the best damned RPGs of the decade let alone better than FO3 in general.

OOC, are you a Metroid fan? In Metroid Fusion, Samus's ship's computer asks her "1. Did this Adam care for you? 2. Would he sit in a safe command room and order you to die?" If the answers are "1. No 2. Yes." The events of Other M actually make a lot more sense.
I apologize for the very delayed response as I haven't been around the BSN lately because works keep me occupied. Hmm, I wouldn't consider myself a big Metroid fan, in fact, I'm ashamed to say that I never played Metroid Fusion and most games in this franchise. I can see your point, though.

Fallout 3 is fun for what it is, it has some impressive landscapes and atmosphere (made 1000 times even better with mods) but I still consider New Vegas to be the superior RPG and a Fallout game.
Also, Fallout 3 has some unintentionally hillarious dialogue, if you know what I mean. Dialogues like these would be considered a gimmick/joke in NV or older Fallout games, while in Fallout 3 they are supposed to be serious. I think that's what makes it even funnier.
There were even mods that had to fix/rewrite those lines about middle-aged father and the intelligence check at GNR. ![]()
Bethesda really needs to hire an actual writing team instead of using trained monkeys (sorry Emil, but your only best work was the Dark Brotherhood.).
But in their defense, who here actually plays their games for the story or writing, right?

I left the best for the end:

Some guy was actually trying to argue with me about the last one. Shows how deluded some Bethesda fanboys are.

By the way, since it's during Quakecon weekend, I think every game in Fallout franchise is up to 66% drop so maybe it's your chance to grab every game while there's a discount.
