Hey all.  I'm relatively new to ME2 and have an insoluable problem (so far, for me, not you geniuses) which revolves around the hacking system.  I am on a PC for this game and have relatively severe nerve damage issues with my hands.  I can usually manage the other minigame, and I'm getting to be a wiz at combat but with the degree of damage to my hands I have not been able to manage the hacking minigame even once.  Not once out of conservitively estimated to be 150 plus attempts.

Is there no way around this minigame?  I'm in the mission where you first fight the Collecters.  You can not advance the game further without this hack (an asinine feature on the part of EA, but that's another issue) being done and thus, I'm stuck.  I can NOT Hack and I cann not advance the game without hacking.  Someone please help.

PS Trainers and my system don't mix, I hate cheats to begin with and in this specific example I have not been able to get the suggested (on another forum) trainer to install on mine in the first place.  I simply can not get around this.

Sorry, I am on xbox so I can't help with your specific problem here, but I did want to give you an FYI about why some of these hacking and bypassing mini-games are there. The game designer put them in so that you cannot advance to the next cut scene without having first dealt with the enemy in whatever arena you are currently in. If you start to hack or bypass and get shot, the hack or bypass is aborted and you have to start again. So they are there not to annoy you (as much as you may find them to be annoying) but for a very specific game play reason.

In Mass Effect 3 they did away with the hacking and bypass mini-games and moved to a system where you just have to activate an item for a few seconds before it opens/triggers the next cut scene. It accomplishes the same goal, but does not force you to go through a mini-game to achieve it. Clearly, BW has been working on improving their games based on lessons learned in previous ones.

Sure, fighting past a given enemy is one thing, but why does the Soldier have to do the hacking when the Engineer is just standing there?  It would be like having the one armed old Pirate in the ships crew be the one who has to juggle for some asinine in game reason.  Minigames are just that.  They are (sometimes) fun side attractions.  When you tie them to tghe main story line such that you can't do the main story line without them, you've just screwed up, period.

It gets easier and faster with practice.  A few suggestions:

1) If on a PC, use WASD to navigate up, down, right, left, and then use the "action" key to select each code fragment.

2) before you start the game, the first code fragment is shown in the top panel.  It helps to know the first fragment before you are put under time pressure.  Also, when you select each code fragment, look up at the top panel - this way you are forced to see the next code fragment before you begin searching again.

3) There are only a few actual distinct code fragments - look for key features such as "bunch of white code lines", or "three purple codes lines", etc, to simplify your search.

Good luck!

Maybe try this one, unless you already did. I cannot test this myself at the moment. But it's something that might be worth trying.

It's a trainer, according to the Readme you should be able to skip both minigames.

do you mean hacking as in the code hacks? I don't think there's any hacks that advance the game. A lot of it was just credits, but you gain some upgrades along the way.

I find the bypass wire minigames more harder on my carpal tunnel.. (or painful...?) . Somehow I find a way to fix the lags by tweaking the .ini and using ENB presets. So I usually avoid the bypass games unless I have to play them to advance the game like a lock door or something.

There is a hacking game right after the two scions and husk horde in the Horizon court yard. I think it may be the only hacking game needed to advance the story.

There's one after facing the first scion during the IFF mission and another one just before getting to the core

Those are bypass games.

Then how do you progress to the next part of the story? You don't do those, you can't continue the game.

The OP was asking about hacking. He/she indicated he/she did not have problems with bypass games. I was saying that the Horizon court yard hack was the only hacking game needed to advance the story. The other mini games needed to advance the story are all bypass games.

I'm not sure if the links toward the end of these posts work, but here are some potential solutions.

Thanks to all respondents.  I'll go back to Mass Effect 2 someday and just keep trying I suppose.  Yeah, Cap & Gown is right, it's that ONE place, glad to hear it's the only one.  Either that or I shut my virus protection off and hope for the best, or I just give up.

This is insane.  You have to do the mini games, the sidelight, to play the main game at all with no way past it.   I'm playing Mass Effect 3 now and loving it.  The mini games, even in 1, were a pain in the ass.  I play on nightmare in most games.  I love combat, and the fact that I can get around wasd idiocy makes my enjoyment that much the greater.  Even though I can't use the asd part of the equation worth a damned I can win these games nightmare, often Dead is Dead nightmare just being insanely careful and reacting well and not being afraid to run the frig away...but mini games that REQUIRE wasd...gods save me from code monkeys who like cell phone apps.

Edit: Monica21-->If I could get hold of Pochuto, or understood what the heck he was talking about in that last post,  that would be great.  But it doesn't appear to be an option.  Unless perhaps you understand what he was talking about in that last post of his?  Atleast it's nice to know I'm not the only person in this trap.

I feel your pain.  I'm a stroke survivor, so my reaction time and dexterity (among other things) are reduced; and they weren't that great to begin with.

Sadly, EA are not the only publishers guilty of restricting story progression to an asinine game mechanic - Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II aggravated me for a while, as I could beat 99.9% of the game on it's hardest difficulty.  The .1% I could not beat on this difficulty? A button mash sequence.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.  I endorse a_mouse's reply:

The only difference for me was I played it on 360, not PC, otherwise this is exactly what I did.

He's got an account but I can't find anything. My guess is it's on the old forums and it's been long enough ago that he's moved on. I was hoping there would be a project file for what he did, but no luck there either. And I'm pretty new to modding ME so I sort of kind of know what he's talking about, but not really. I've played around with the Coalesced Editor but that's about it.

A hacking module can be purchased at Harots shop on Omega that will give more time to hack

This hacking game must be a pain also for people who are color-blinded.

A few hints:

1-You can quick save prior to all the hacking games if I´m not mistaken as long as you have eliminated all hostile forces nearby.

2-Since it´s obvious that your have a disability, why not use console commands and simply give yourself free credits? That way, you would only need to do hacking in order to progress on a few missions (very few are required), acquire upgrades (you can see in the mass effect wikia part devoted to upgrades where each one is located) or some-side missions like the ones from liara.

3-You can memorize the exact configuration of the first panel you need to select.

4-What I do when dealing with the 2 remaining pieces is trying to discern at least 2 particular aspects of the image. Two colors that come one after the other? A big gap on the middle? A big piece in the middle with X particular color? A gap in the lower left portion of the image with a purple portion at the end of it?

5-If you fail, just go back to the last quick-save. You can always try it again.

As for the other mini-game, one strategy that never fails is to memorize only the 2 first pieces you illuminate and then go by a process of elimination. There´s plenty of time adopting this method.

Sorry to bring up the dead, but the minigames are a nightmare for me. Colorblind and with two broken and fairly useless wrists. heh. I'll keep trying this session, but if I can't get a handle on this, I'll have to move on to some other game. Very frustrating, and not the least bit fun.

Have you gotten the hacking module from Harots shop? It gives more time for hacking.
