Cole is my fav companion in Inquisition! From the moment I recruit him, he's always in my party! I find the things he says most intriguing, especially on long treks like to the Hissing Wastes, and depending on his personal quest's conclusion, his dialogue changes and you get to hear how he's adapting to the choice you made for him. He (and Dorian) always become my Inquisitor's best friends.

Just popping in because I saw that this was a new (??) Cole thread.

Have any of you all been watching the USA network series Humans? It's about sentient androids. At any rate, when I saw this guy I immediately went "OMG COLE," and I really can't get it out of my head whenever he's on screen. It's less the look and more his character's manner and innocence.

Ok, Colers. We're going to have to protect Cole from those Oxmans, if they dare to invade  SouthernThedas. Even though I'm willing to bet that Cole is going to be right on the front lines, ready to take them down. I don't even know how he feels about elves and Qunari. I guess he sees all of them the same, since he cares mostly about helping people rather than who they're are or what they are.

Hmmm, that brings up an interesting question. It's easy for Cole to fight in this war, he's fighting against demons and templars that have been completely corrupted by the red lyrium, but if it was a fight against normal, perhaps misguided, people? I'd imagine he wouldn't take sides, but instead protect civilians from both parties, but maybe he would side against the Qunari since they would be the aggressors?

How wonderful, it's a Cole thread. I was disappointed that I could never find one, but here is one now. I bet it would make Cole happy.

As long as we all stay nice, I don't think Cole would like people fighting over him :(

I love Cole's banter and comments, unfortunately I also like Sera and Varric in my party so it;'s really hard to decide what rogue I want. Cole, hands down, has the best banters X) they're so insightful into the other companion's characters and make you realize how selfless he is.

We decided on a new since the last post on the previous one was in April :-/ I heard that the previous thread had gotten pretty mean too.

I have not seen it (no cable have to wait until it comes onto Netflix X), but I love stories that blur the lines between humanity and make you question what it really means to be human. :D

Edit: Just clicked on the link to the actor... he's hawt!

Oh, I asked this question in some other thread, but I figured I'd ask you all. I thought of this while writing a scene in a fic. The fic contained a combat scene after which the Inquisitor's LI dies (it was a nightmare, I'm not that mean). But it made me wonder how Cole would react in such a situation. He's used to helping people whose emotional pain has lingered after whatever caused it, but I imagine that fresh anguish like that would be overwhelming for him. I can't remember how he reacts to Evangeline's "death" in Asunder, but I think that would be different from DAI since he actually says that he now "feels more." I know he would want to help -- I had this vision of him moving toward the Inquisitor and Varric stopping him and shaking his head -- but there really isn't anything you can do to help in such situations, and sometimes a person needs to be left alone with their grief to scream, cry, etc.

Thoughts?

Hmmm, I never read Asunder, but you have to remember Cole's out marching with the Inquisitor during wartime... I imagine he feels fresh anguish all the time. Families being forced to leave their homes, victims of war violence, the crazed anger that red lyrium leaves in it's wake, mages that have never left their Circles trying to survive in a world that hates them, soldiers never knowing if they'll see there loved ones again... and I'm sure a lot more. He does what he can, but by the fact that Cole stays with the Inquisition and helps them means that even he has a sense of "the greater good" and is trying to relieve the worst of the pain that the Breach is causing. So, to answer your question... I have no idea XD.

And Vents!  ;) He's also fighting against the vents. I think he has made up his mind by the end of Inquisition. Cole will fight against anyone that stands against the Inquisitor. I hope he stays a member of the inquisition, because the inquisition will still need members. But, only if you don't disband the Inquisition.

One of the Devs said we'll be getting new content for the followers, so it would be interesting to see how human/or spirit Cole has developed further into the story.

I imagine more human Cole would form enough of an emotional attachment to the Inquisition and his friends to decide to fight with the Inquisition no matter what, but I don't know about more spirit Cole. Would he really go against his nature just to continue to fight along with the Inquisition? I'm not saying the Inquisition would turn bad, but if they were fighting soldiers with lives, families, hopes, and dreams...would he fight them? It's easy to say that slavers or even slave owners should be killed, but I'd imagine the first soldiers sent in by Tevinter would be the lower class (like Krem) and possibly slaves with their handlers. Could Cole fight them if the Inquisition was fighting them? Would Cole fight someone like Tallis, or I.B. if he was still Qunari?

Cole "disappated" before Evangeline died, so his reaction was never described.

I just had the same thought.

But I do see where the Cole thing derives from with that pic.

Can we talk about James Norton and his fantastic voice work for a moment? Because he hits every note of Cole's compassion, wonder, caring, fear, sadness, awkwardness, and subtle changes.

And he's also would make a great Cole if they ever did an Inquisition movie. Pic of him in the spoilers.

Spoiler

He's got that young, boyish face that with a good make-up team, could be turned to our winsome little spirit-boy.

Actually, already an off-topic question (I just can't help myself sometimes) but what actors would you cast for the main DA:I characters if you were the casting director for a DA:I film? No budgeting needed, imagine it's funded by Bill Gates or something.

You don't need to list all the characters, just the one's you think would work with a RL actor.

Héhé Cee, I was about to prpopose that too!!

I love James Norton's voice so much I went and watched almost everything I could find with him in it.

Started by re-watching "Death comes to Pemberley" (I knew I had heard that voice somewhere before...) which is always a delight. Bit of a Jane Austen fan here...

But what I prefer him in is his own whodunit "Grantchester" in which he plays a vicar who solves crime. His original voice is a lot more like human!Cole, although in Grantchster, as he plays a religious man, when he's preaching he also sounds like spirit!Cole quite often...

Here's his twitter, for the greeady fans: https://twitter.com/jginorton

I also felt there was some kind of likeness with Domhnall Gleeson...But he's older now, I think he looked more like him when he played in Harry Potter a few years back:

I have been meaning to watch Grantchester.

Just saw this picture on Twitter. It fits with all the Cole + cute, fluffy animals headcanons.

:)

But I really love all the subtleties of his performance for Cole. He has to sound otherworldly, but still relatable. Detached and innocent, but also confused, sad, afraid, ....I could basically go on all day.

(As far as voice work goes, I think Solas, Cole, and Dorian had the best performances, though all of them were good. Those three just need different levels of versatility.)

Haha I love James Norton too. For me, Evan Peters as Tate Langdon is (at the very least) the perfect Asunder Cole.

Yay, a new Cole thread! I browsed the other one but was a bit too intimidated by some of the...opinions...expressed therein to revive it.

I love Cole a little too much. It's at the point where my husband asks me why I'm looking sad and I have to make up a lie rather than say it's because I'm depressed that Cole is not a real person. My husband is usually pretty understanding about my gaming obsessions but I don't want to push it.

In all my playthroughs I always make Cole more human. As much as I love Solas (and I do love Solas) I believe he is wrong on this point and that Varric is offering the more nuanced and compassionate solution. Cole made the decision to come through to help and by making him more human you're simply helping him along that path. He seems so happy to be able to learn to help without inadvertently freaking people out and if anyone deserves that kind of human happiness it's Cole. Also, like others have said, I don't trust that crappy amulet. It seems like a quick fix for a complex issue and almost makes me think that with Cole the way he is, the way he has made himself, he can only go forward with the human path.

I actually dislike the fact that we have to make the ultimate decision for Cole, it seems a bit wrong to me. Cole isn't an idiot and I think he should be able to choose for himself, but I know that from a gaming standpoint it makes sense for the player to have influence there.

I have a question - there's a bit of banter between Cole and Solas that seems to be attributed to a number of different scenarios - some say it's a deleted file from the game, others that it is for more spirit Cole and some for more human Cole. Does anyone here know for certain? I know the Wiki attributes it to the latter but I have never heard it and it doesn't seem very consistent with human!Cole

Solas: How do you feel, Cole? Are you...

Cole: I am me. I cannot be bound, broken. I will help the hurt and kill the killers.

Solas: I see. I...let me know if I can help.

Just adding my support. I was wondering why I haven't seen a Cole thread but I'm usually gone for months at a time, too, so....

I love Cole to pieces and that surprised me. I've never read Asunder (I keep telling myself I'm going to. *sigh*) so I wasn't sure what to expect from what few things I'd spotted here before the game was released. Now I never go anywhere without him unless it's just to change dialogue up a bit on missions. Otherwise him and Solas are constants. I love the depth and touch of sadness they add to everything and I feel more drawn into the world itself.

As for the human/spirit aspect of it: that was a hard one for me. I actually put my controller down and really tried to rationalize both. In the end I kept him as a spirit. As Solas says there are so few spirits of compassion, and with all of the chaos and sadness going on in Thedas I think that makes Cole even more important. I don't see it as a right or wrong answer though.

"I will try not to die." "Do that, please." sobs forever.

Subjected to His Will is my favorite of all the companion quests. It gives more insight into not only Cole's character but Varric's and Solas' as well. (Varric lets Cole hold Bianca. That's love.) I guess it's weird that the Inquisitor makes this decision (besides the obvious gameplay reason), but Cole asks all three of them to come help him. He doesn't understand why the amulet isn't working, he just wants his closest friends there for moral support. Both of them care about him and want what's best for him, without any ulterior motives getting in the way. Whereas if you could pick who to bring to Redcliffe beforehand, someone like Vivienne or even Blackwall don't care about him enough for it to really work.

I read Asunder after finishing the game, so I didn't go in with any knowledge of Cole but reading Asunder, which I recommend, gave me about 1000x more Cole feelings and I didn't imagine that was possible.

As far as the decision in Cole's personal quest, it was very easy for me. i felt like Varric was more wishful thinking and pushing Cole into becoming something he wasn't, even with good intentions.

I came to a similar conclusion as you and reinforced him as a spirit. That to me is more true to who he is though it is rather bittersweet, but he is light and happy with it.

If spirit Cole believes the Inquisition is helping people, then he'll continue to fight with them. Remember, it was spirit Cole that joined the Inquisition in the first place. But, you do make a good point. Fighting other people with problems that Cole could be helping, may make him unsure on what to do. Spirit Cole can form emotional attachments to people also, hence Rhys and Evangeline. I think once he has attached to someone, he's willing to stay by their side into the end.

Varric didn't peer pressure Cole at all. He was just teaching him that there are other ways to solve a problem.  If Cole truly wants to help people, he will need to know that there are other ways to help people.

Yay, a new Cole thread!  ^_^ I'm not very active in character threads, but I'm glad this is back.

1) Here's the big one, did you make Cole more spirit or more human and why?

2) Who is your favorite party pairing with Cole for banter?

1) I may have cheated slightly. I imported my canon worldstate twice, so he can be more human on one and more spirit on the other. It's still such a hard choice for me, since I love both paths. I mean, on the one hand he has the opportunity to grow as a person, and help people on a much more complex and emotional level. He also has the chance to experience everything that mortal life has to offer (except food, bleugh!  ). On the other hand, he has all his abilities still available so he can help lots of people, he's able to rediscover his 'true nature', and he can return to the Fade if he wishes. Both have risks, though I don't think he'd ever go the way of Justice. And either way, he's still the Cole I know and love.  ^_^

2) Cassandra! I love how much their relationship grows, how she starts off distrusting him, but eventually they end up as good friends. Especially after her personal quest, and he helps her come to terms with the Tranquility thing. They just make my heart melt! My two favourite characters. His friendships with Dorian and Solas are runners up. Dorian was pretty unexpected! I keep trying to get Sera to the point that she and Cole are... comfortable (ish?) with each other. Think the best I'll get is "you're a weird person, go away". I hear he also has some interesting insights into Vivienne.

Yeah, I think Cole would be willing to fight any invasion force, especially if they do what Bull says. Leashing or killing the mages. Breaking the minds of people like Sera and Varric. I was thinking about the Tevinter situation earlier and whether Cole would want to free slaves if he was there. I'd probably be worried about the blood magic binding thing, even with his personal quest done.

I'm about to start watching that show! If there's someone similar to Cole in there, I just know I'd love it.

Thoughts?

Hmm, he might not be able to help them directly because the grief is so raw. I feel like he might do little things instead, to try and make their day easier and brighter. He mentions slipping honey into Leliana's wine, putting a wooden duck on Dorian's bed etc. I think he'd do something like that for the Inquisitor. Little things to keep them going. And maybe just company if they need it. I guess if you were the kind of person who just needed to break down and cry while someone hugs you, he'd do that. If you needed space, he'd just stick to the little helping things. Oh, this topic is rather sad.

I have a question for the thread: if you could have Cole meet any character from the previous games, who would it be and why?
