Is this still good enough? We've seen more dynamic scenery in lots of games, including the super old godfather EA game. Also the Assassin's Creed series with their lifelike settlements with NPCs walking around even in the small Vita version. I was playing Liberation yesterday and it's just pleasant to stroll across the streets. I was impressed (never played any AC games). Compared to it, Illium feels stale because nobody is moving.

Yes, the genres are different, those are action games, but you visit hubs in RPGs too and Andromeda should have at least one hub. We'll see plenty of barren scenery. I hope one place feels alive.

Not if they're going partially open world.

But all the games I mentioned as examples are at least partially open world.

NPCs standing still was mostly a way to conserve resources on the old consoles which had incredibly limited memory.    Making them mobile and having complex animations running took up valuable CPU cycles and memory that was deemed could be used better elsewhere.

Now that they have shed the old consoles, I would be very surprised if the new game didn't have a more 'living' feeling.

Are the new consoles really that much better? They still seem to be fairly weak compared to PC's....

They might be and probably are.  However, that's because you hear so much about OC'ing both graphics cards and CPU's it's not even funny.  Also, you're hearing about the bleeding edge when it comes down to PC's.

The graphics card wars are almost over.   Just like the CPU wars were over about a decade ago.  It's just gonna be which resolution are they gonna decide on?   I'm certainly hoping for 1080 and not 1440.  Although, either would be fine with me.

4K gaming still has a long ways to go before it's even an option.

Was saying this awhile back. Everybody being in a fixed location makes everything feel static. I'd like to see our squadmates moving throughout specific areas of hub worlds instead of being able to find them in the same spot throughout the course of the game.

They're a significant improvement from 2005 consoles with 512 MB of memory.

You can read comments from BioWare and Naughty Dog discussing how memory constraints forced them to cut content. ME3 holstering was one such casualty.

A computer from this year can probably outmatch a computer from last year. It really shouldn't be that surprising that a console from over a decade ago can't keep up with one that's almost a decade younger.

It could be. Maybe they still can't tell with all the terrible texture and resolution usage on "next gen" titles.

First of all, we are hardly in an age of 'post memory.' These resources are still very limited.

Secondly, developers actually have to build these systems. They actually have to make these animations. That's a lot of work.

While I agree, it can be done. The Witcher 3 did it with its NPCs in villages, towns, and cities. It is part of the reason why the game world feels much more alive than the world in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

That says almost nothing. Pretty much anything 'can be done' if you have the resources. At least for computer programs. It's not an issue of whether it 'can be done.' It's an issue of 'can it be done at an acceptable cost while competing with any of the other dozens and dozens and features that would be nice to have as well as the numerous features that are consider mandatory at this point for a BioWare game.'

I think everyone is aware that anything that goes into a game also goes through cost/benefit analysis.

It should be done however if the game is going to be partially open world.

Optimization is a wonderful thing.

It is also a buzzword. The consoles have 8 GB RAM but use ~3.5 GB of that for the OS. A normal Win7 PC uses ~2 GB. Win8 and Win10 are better still.
