Dragon Age II is basically a prologue to Inquisition; an interesting pattern for the DA series?

I really dislike the school of thought that "butthurt fanboys" prevented DA2 from reaching its "full potential." Short development times and a rushed new direction prevented DA2 from achieving this "potential."

Though, as often happens on the Internet, many did not express their grievances in the most, um... constructive manner, the critiques were legitimate. Taking a new direction with a franchise is always a risk, and a developer has to be able to justify this change with superior in-game content. However, DA2 was a very flawed game and therefore did little to quiet the inevitable complaints.

The whole "Actually a Prologue to DAI" thing doesn't change this. DA2 was sold as the sequel to DAO and that is what people bought. Paid DLC made after the game's release does not justify a game's initial release.

Hawke was supposed to be Inquisitor but too many people hated DA2.

Turns out the OP is essentially correct.

There’s also the sense that DA2 sets the stage for what comes afterward. The plot of DAI would not make sense without the ground work that DA2 laid.

Did the OP have advance knowledge of this?  See the thread on this interview:  David Gaider: Part 2 "Dragon Age 2: A Retrospective".

Times have too much changed due to the whole western industry promoting consumerism to the max.  The industry are reaping the benefits "entitled customers" in need of there fix = instant gratification in all wishes at the spot there and then and massive tantrums occur if the industry can't deliver.

Under conditions like that creativity suffers and is the first to evaporate on the spot.  Personally I wouldn't want to be a dev today no matter what you do you seem to get the short end of the stick.

Anyway thats my experience after following 3 games forums from games I love to play.  Even succesfull games sales wise have hordes of malcontents to deal with, even the smallest problem seems the biggest sin produced that must instanly be rectified.

Promotion and sales teams are good at selling smoke screens but reality catches up eventually to the point now consumers can't deal with reality any more and they demand the Cinderella version pronto wich simply can't be delivered.

What?  First off, go easy on the word "entitled".  It gets thrown around like confetti, with just about as much focus.  We are all entitled to certain things, like getting what we paid for.  In a vacuum, the word is meaningless.  Second, what are you going on about, and why did you post it here?  The conversation is about the nature of DA2.  At least pretending to be on topic would be appreciated.

^This. In fact, I believe that the marketing for DA2 really didn't help it. In addition to being rushed and not well executed at key moments.

Hahaha no. Well, no in relation to DA2.

It is true that the gaming community can be volitile when it comes to accepting disappointment (Case-in-point, the reaction of "Can I sue Bioware for false adverting about DAI because it wasn't as impressive as the PRE ALPHA FOOTAGE." Which was a thread on this very forum.) However, this does not mean that ALL CRITICISMS ARE SUDDENLY TOXIC.

Sure, with DA2 there was some of the general "Bioware lied to all of us! They are evil selling us the worst game ever and lying to us!" But this does not change the fact that DA2 WAS a sub-par sequel with a lot of reused assets and an obviously rushed storyline.

Also, just a bit of FYI, when a game is sold as the actually being the "Cinderella experience" when it is not so, that is false advertising, which is something that people would be justified in being upset about.

The problem is that the whole templar mage war was reduced to a minority part of the game while it should have a bigger plot
