Animation.

tumblr_mdp8cu2LF11qicw9z.gif

Since the Dawn of Time, people have used the phrase "since the dawn of time" to add dramatic flair. Lucky for you, I'd never resort to such a thing.

The use of drawings or less traditional methods to create the illusion of a reality beyond our own has become an inexorable part of geek culture, now more than ever. The thread is essentially for all things cartoon, movies included of course. Wax Nostalgic and share stories of the past, share thoughts on the present or future state of cartoons as a whole. Or that sort of thing.

You can't beat our thread, Dom.

No matter how hard you try!

Incidentally. Here's a good place to watch some Cartoons if you wanna try them out before buying 'em.

http://kisscartoon.m...rtoon/Gargoyles

It's where I'll watch Gargoyles before falling in love with Xanatos and buying the entire collection.

DYK: During major story/plot episodes of Teen Titans they played the English version of the theme. And the more light hearted or less plot relevant episodes they played the Japanese version.

Obvious trivia is obvious, but Teen Titans was my jam and I always thought that tidbit was interesting.

Good thread Dom!

Thanks for the tip :P Really wish I had Disney Channel back in the day due to Gargoyles, I was a lowly broadcast peasant. Already finished the 3 Seasons, I consider it one of my favorites now. :)

The Japanese Theme's pretty goofy for TT, so I suppose that makes sense. Teen Titans did pretty well for themselves, and having an all-new cast instead of retreading classic DC/Marvel characters is a nice bonus.

The new Teen Titans go is crap. I would prefer the old one.

Of course there was Star Wars Clone Wars 2003. I even found the entire series on youtube in one whole video and am rewatching it.

The older shows that were on Cartoon Network > Newer shows. This is fact.

I have also noticed a disturbing lack of the Grim Adventures of Bill and Mandy.

Admittedly, when I was a kid I looked up to dear old Prime, the leader of the Autobots. (We learn something new everyday about me Clones) before I was introduced to Gundam. That, I will admit.

No Code Lyoko? Shame. (Honestly don't know if that belongs in here or the anime thread).

No American Dad? Shame.

I'd still watch the Clone Wars. I mean it does have BA Clone troopers. And I like Clone Troopers.

A shout out to Dom for the quality OP.

In case anyone is interested what show to watch, I would personally recommend Gargoyles. Why exactly? Well I am glad you asked!

tumblr_inline_nfia1c7Y7E1r1i6fv.jpg

There is certainly a lot that I could say about this particular show in question, but to cut things short and not having me rambling about it for no end, what it essentially boils down to is a show that is wrapped with gripping storylines that are soaked in mythos and history, exploring a plethora of different themes like life, death, revenge, love, etc, while simultaneously featuring a well written and distinctive cast, that keeps you engaged throughout this series.

To summaries the setting; the series revolves around a group of Gargoyles who awake from a thousand year slumber in present day New York, and the episodes revolve around the group tackling the changed world they find themselves in through different ways, mixing it up with daily affairs and them meddling with some powerful figures and organizations that naturally end up causing more trouble than they'd anticipate. The strengths in the shows stories relies not simply in the quality of them, but also the share amount of difference that it offers in genres; be it about action oriented ones, drama, sci-fi, history, romance, etc. In addition as you keep experiencing through the 78 episodes, you'll see how well many arcs are interwoven with each other, where certain characters and events that had a brief appearance earlier in the show, are brought much later in in quite intriguing ways. That is not of course to say that the show is a masterpiece or anything, since there are some issues to be found, and your occasional uses of tropes, gags and jokes that are common with cartoons, but those hardly manages to overshadow the central things that the series has going for itself.

What is important--that I personally find--for cartoons to do is not simply be able to tell a compelling story, but also be able to be educational. There are your everyday lessons like "forgive your enemy no matter what" and everything in between, but there are certainly a surprising amount of rather mature takes on life lessons and such, something which I haven't seen many other cartoons do. Anyone familiar with cartoons will know that they often are quite heavy on PSA (public service announcement), which are prominently centered towards children. Gargoyles does a rather nice job in not only doing such towards children, but adults as well. For example, a particular episode revolves around one of the gargoyles--named Broadway--who is naturally curious about the outside world and sees a cowboy film. He gets excited about the uses of guns in it, and happens to start playing with his detective friend's--Elisa Maza--gun, whom he ends up shooting. What makes the episode compelling is how it doesn't try to oversimplify the issue with a "ALL GUNS ARE BAD" but actually handles it in quite a mature fashion. The episode puts emphasis on trust, forgiveness and acceptance, and makes the episode educational in a sense wherein it doesn't simply use fear as a motivator to instigate that violence is bad, but instead on it relying on responsibility, and how both partners--Elisa and Broadway--were in the wrong (he played with a gun, Elisa had a gun out in the open). What makes it even more rewarding is how Elisa keeps the gun in future episodes in a lock box, and Broadway is somewhat more grown up by the incident. The show has some meaningful character developments, and you will have them referencing events that have gone by earlier and makes you appreciate all the small parts that much more.

There are a lot more I could say about the show, be it about the individual characters, arcs, themes, and more. But if you have your mind set on experiencing Gargoyles, then I can guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Prime opportunity for me to finally finish Gargoyles for sure. <3 As a kid, both it and Batman TAS were big parts of my viewing rotation.

I guess it's really no surprise to me to see the sort of media I gobble up at an older age because of that though.

Aww, you missed the other series of TMNT. Mainly the 2003 series. That was the best.

Also, there's the upcoming Cuphead game which is a homage to 30s animation.
