I am not quite sure in what kind of position the Avvar in is right now. 

The Katari got some pretty big buffs to make his survivability better, so I had a buff idea for the Avvar.

The Reaver gets heal % on hit, Katari guard on hit.

How about the Avvar getting guard on kill? I think this kind of suits his playstyle as an all in heavy damage dealing bruiser. It doesnt need to be extreme numbers, but a small amount could help him out quite a lot.

Avar is pretty epic if he has HoK.

 

His AoE damage is second to none and his elemental skills alreadly allow you to generate guard or higher defenses.

 

TBH the classes that need buffs for later Perilous, Nightmare etc is the Necromancer and Templar needs increased damage dealing.

Avvar needs something. Guard on kill would be nice or damage resistance that stacks with each kill (with a limit that resets). I have low constitution and avvar is squishy.

For Perilous Avvar is perfectly fine as it is.
For NM lacks damage. When Avvar can kill, HoK should be enough to keep him alive. Guard is just a bonus with his amount of it. Maybe if he got health of katari or reeaver it would be more useful.
He also lacks any kind of armor passives but on the other hand he can reduce damage incoming in couple of ways.
So personally I would just buff his health to the level of katari and reaver and after that check how he plays.

As for the effect build in, guard on hit thingy does not fit this mage with hammer and horns. I would give him something like guard or health every time he applies some status effect (burn, chill, burn, frozen, shocked).

I suggested in another thread giving Avvar barrier generation ala the AW, but at a lesser rate of generation (the Avvar can do more damage than AW, so it seems only fair that Avvar doesn't have as much damage mitigation as the AW).

 

What would be perfect, if the mechanic existed in the game, is if the Avvar developed something that mitigated ranged damage only, because if he's getting killed at melee range, it's his own fault ha ha.

You could also go with innate elemental damage resistance (either as a constant effect or when dealing damage/killing).

Like many other classes you can play him in NM with a decent amount of promotions. But without you will keep dying in NM. So yeah he needs something.

Interesting kit this one. I have soloed the first 3 zones NM on OC vs RT using his wombo combo and Dmg reduction. I didn't make it past the first wave vs Demons. He has 3 glaring weeknesses: no DoT removal, no CC removal and he can be knocked out of CL by a basic attack. Vs Terrors he spends his limited health on his back, 3 Wraiths will set him on fire or slow him enough to be completely useless.
I have a few promotions and all the gear he needs but he can't do squat when effectively countered.

If high promotions are required in order for a character/class to be effective, there's a problem.

Wombo Combo:
Hakkon's Charge/Ice Smash to Chill mobs
Upgraded Chilling Tremors to Freeze Chilled mobs
Detonate with Crushing Leap.
Unfortunately there are quite a few mobs with immunity to Chill so you can't freeze them.
Chilling Tremors does a fair chunk of dmg and with high end gear will kill a lot of mobs on Perilous.
Definitely a NM combo or mid range gear/low promotes on Peri.

Edit: pretty sure you need Superb Stamina Amulet to afford it.

I've like to play him with AoE freeze > self shatter focussed.

 

- Hakkon charge into enemies

- Korth might (get dmg resist %)

- Chilling tremor (with upgrade, AoE freeze everything)

- Auto attack to regain stamina

- Crushing leap (AoE shatter everything)

 

Repeat. Spam Hakkon charge/Korth might to keep Guard up.

I've tried this quite a lot on Perilous. Its a pretty offensive build, but getting Chilled defense will boost your survivabilty quite a lot.

 

Lady's Wrath/ Rage of the Avvar are great to replace Chilling tremor/Crushing leap with.
