Norton vs Mcafee antivirus - which one is better?

I have never played.. I mean, never ran Mcafee on my pc but after a year on Norton and a loyal customer I would like to point out that it is better.
1. The visuals are amazing. I really like the contrast between black and yellow.
2. The service is great, I can play Norton on up to 5 devices for extra protection.
3. Scanning doesn't slow my hardware down all that much.
4. Has a really good backup system.
Things I'm not happy with:
Too many options. I.e scanning, defragmenting etc. I don't have the time to run all of these at once. Norton should release a dlc to make it easier and compress all these things into one, simple method.
Now Mcafee. I've never run it, but I'm sick of them shoving their agenda down my throat. I download programs and they insist on installing trials. Not on. Get away leeches.

I used to run McAfee back in the DOS days when I ran a BBS. It would auto-scan all of the files uploaded to my BBS via zmodem, HS/Link, BiModem, Kermit, Puma, etc. I kept it under Win 3.x as well. When I went to OS/2 for a couple of years, I ran without virus protection. Not smart, but c'est la vie.
When I switched to Windows 95, I jumped on the Norton bandwagon. Stayed with them for a LONG, LONG time until they became so bloated and slowed down my system so much, I just couldn't stand it any longer. Switched back over to McAfee for a couple of years. Then heard rumors that Norton had cleaned up their act, so switched back and sure enough, sleek and mean. Still, free is nice, so I did eventually switch over to Microsoft's freebie stuff, and that's what I've been running for a few years now. Sure, I miss the customization options available in Norton and McAfee, but oh well.
TL;DR: There is no reason to love one at the expense of the other. DITCH BOTH THEIR ARSES FOR THE FREE STUFF!

After conversing with many hardware and software people about viruses, antivirus software, and conversing extensively with customer reps from both Mcafee and Norton, I have concluded the following:
I will never pay a subscription for antivirus software ever under any circumstances. It is in Microsoft and Apple's best interests to make sure that their antivirus software included with Operating Systems is as effective as possible. I would rather rely on the market's self interest to protect me than pay some company a subscription fee for something that is basically the same quality as what is already included. Especially when there is a problem and you need their help with it - because the subscription means nothing at that point, and McAfee will charge you full consultation and tech fees for removing any virus that their software failed to catch.
Microsoft will talk you through removing a virus that their anti-virus software failed to catch as part of tech support.
And the most malicious viruses are usually actively acquired, not passively, which means AV software has limited ability to catch or prevent them.

Excellent point. There is only so much any software can do to protect you from PEBKAC errors.

I used Zone Alarm until they updated beyond my old PC's OS which is Vista. Yeah I know I need to upgrade my PC but sadly more important concerns have and will continue to bother me, like buying food.
