With the toolset coming out very soon, and the amount of builders that will start working with it, we could really use organized toolset forums. The traffic here is going to increase a lot, and it's going to be more difficult to sort through posts of interest. Many of us will be specialized in certain fields, so I think a good idea would be to split the toolset forums into different forums for those specializations.

How about splitting the toolset forum into:
  • Level and Area Editor
  • Creature Creation (head morphs, characters, merchants, creatures)
  • Cutscene Editor
  • Scripting
  • VFX
This forum list is just a suggestion, what is important is that we really need to organize the toolset forums in order to have an overview and being able to sort through posts. =]
Also, having a forum for module presentation or module testing would be nice.

And of course we need "Released" and "In Development" forums for (un)complited modules.

Also will be useful such forums as "Builder's Stuff" for custom models, textures etc.

The NWN2 forum structure worked fine for me.

I wholly agree with the sentiment however I'm not convinced by the suggested categories. Merchants (i.e. stores) are more closely associated with areas than creatures. Separating VFXs out would make for one very quiet forum.

In the past (i.e. NWN and NWN2) the split has been:

  • Custom Content Creators (i.e. 3D art and animations)
  • Builders
  • Scripters
  • Developers (i.e. utility and plug-in creators)
With DA:O there might be some sense in splitting off Cutscenes from the "Builders" category for all the machinima however where does put conversations, stages, voice over, FaceFX, animation blend tress, etc.

I totally agree Sunjammer. My point is that we need several forums in order to organize the toolset content. I have no personal experience with the DA toolset, so you guys would be much better qualified to sort out what categories are needed. My example is just that, an example. =]

But I think the Cutscene Editor should have its own category. I don't doubt that it will be popular, both for modules and machinima, and many will have a lot of questions regarding it. There could be a General Forum as well I guess, where non-specified topics could be discussed.

I think at the very least a subform sorting out projects in progress from gerneral questions is necesary.

The NWN2-style organization proposed by Sunjammer suits me fine. Though I'm tempted to merge the Developers forum with the CC forum (call it Content Creators and Developpers), since the Developers forum (for NWN2) seemed to get very little traffic.

And one additional understanding : that new module announcements (including beta versions looking for testers) can be made in the general forum and are not confined to the Builders/Modules forum.

In that case it might make more sense to merge Scripters and Developers since they are both programming disciplines.

However one is very much more involved than the other.

We originally did have Scripters/3rd party devs as one forum in NWN way back in the beginning and the developer's threads were getting pushed off the front pages too fast due to simple scripter questions...I'm pretty sure that's why we split them off.

I'm pretty sure we'll be able to push to get some finer granularity in the forums once the social site bugs get squished down a bit. It's all very new so there's a lot of stuff going on all at once.

I'd be fine with all module-building-related stuff together. Like scripting, conversations, and level editing are topics that any module builder will have to be involved with. But plug-in/utility development and custom content are definitely separate entities.

EDIT: As you say, it would probably make sense for scripting to be separate too for the reasons mentioned.

I see CC, plugins and other mod making utilities as mod builder tools, so that's why I thought that they could belong in the same forum. That would create more traffic for these categories and give the different projects and questions a bit more visibility. Judging by the NWN2 forums it does not seem to me any of these categories would suffer from the high volumes of posts regarding another.

That's just a proposal. I'd be happy with a structure just like for NWN2.

Please, could we split the toolset forums into more organized categories as soon as possible? We really need this.
