And why are so many communities opposed to Local Multiplayer?

Because it doesn't force two people to buy different copies of the game, and it doesn't involve servers that let them <a> track activity over time and <b> flip a kill-switch for old games when they want to promote new ones.

(Hey, you asked.)

That's not the same thing....

That's a Bethesda game.

To be fair, that seems more likely a limitation imposed by the dated game engine.

I still think its a valid example for you go beyond what the hardware is capable of and the game bogs down under the extra crunching of data. I remember reports that the save files for Skyrim were larger then the physical memory of the consoles so the games started to thrash as they would cycling the data off the hard disk into memory and back to the hard disk.

Now this is the kind of multiplayer I would want. It's so much fun to play with a friend by your side and troll them wile doing it.

One of the reasons I love Borderlands is local co-op. Would love to see it in MEA!

I'm most likely going to work as a game Developer, I think I will put as much work as possible into creating a new type of Local Multiplayer Role Playing Game. When I make a game I pay attention to detail as much as possible, so I would try to have a seamless local multiplayer experience with DLC compatability so it's not some confusing mashup of "One player does not have the required DLC! Go get an internet connection and buy this DLC!"

I think it's about money, that may be one of the reasons Local Multiplayer is not a large feature in games anymore.

Especially since 2(or more) player games still technically exist.

I think the ability to share one system in multiplayer would be pretty cool. Might be constraining for smaller screens, but whatever. It can still work.

If it worked on 16 inch 480i TV screens back in the '80s and '90s then it should definitely work today on 32 inch and bigger 1080p TV screens.

The fact that our TVs became bigger with higher resolutions should be an incentive to make more local co-op or local multiplayer games, not less.

Considering the price of buying the entire Shepard trilogy vs the price of the dlc right now you're right. It's all about money. Buy an online "pass" to play MP? That's just... no. I get that EA has to make a profit to keep the lights on but at a certain point some things seem a little over the top from a customer's point of view. Still though, I would like to play ME with my sister and local coop is the only way that's ever going to happen.

Yeah, but all those extra pixels also mean that much more work for the graphics cards.

System link, sure.  Local split screen?  Remember as a kid when you died and you blamed it on your friend "screen cheating."

There was this thing called the internet that rendered local multiplayer obsolete.

What ever happened to that internet thing?

Truth be told, while some may be nostalgic for local multiplayer, I would argue that two things make it a financially poor decision to focus development on:

1) the internet making multiplayer with anyone, anywhere, obviously more efficient on a full screen.

2) most gaming nerds are antisocial. They put up with local multiplayer because they had a select subset of friends who shared their nerdy endeavors. But in reality, they would prefer to sit in front of a tv with minimal human interaction.

Why can't people enjoy gaming today w/o having a buddy along to play with you?

I like solo playing RPG's.

If I want to group I'll play a MMORPG.

I just don't get why anyone needs other people to help them roleplay their character.

.... Borderlands. I played with my sister. It was frustrating as heck. I hate it. How many times did I wonder why she did this or that? How many times did I die because of mistakes? How many times did I bite my tongue to prevent the verbal lashing that she was due? Uncountable # of times. Two Alpha females should never game together. I'll never go down that road again. (and I love my sister. can't imagine with just a friend)

Eww to needing a second person to play a SP game.

I agree with this. RPGs were meant to be single player. The way Jeebus intended.

One time I tried to teach my girlfriend how to play Mass Effect. She kept running Shepard into corners. I blamed it on the controls, but really she just sucks.

Any game is local multiplayer if you want it to be.  Just take turns doing missions and advising/making fun of the gaming ability of/giving the wrong advice to the player doing the mission.

Making fun of friends for doing something entirely and hilariously stupid is part of the Nostalgia of Local Multiplayer games, I want them back.

Not really. I suck at many things that she is far superior to me at. We even share the same profession, and she is admittedly better than me at it.

If it were mean I would have told her she sucked at video games instead of saying the controls were awkward.
