Nah, let's keep it human only for the Mass Effect series.  It'll produce a much more tightly focused story, and I think a richer experience overall.

<avoiding the latest set PC vs custom PC debate in relation to TW>

I was completely relieved when I human only was confirmed. When it comes to tackling a variety of origins, that's challenging enough. But to introduce the wide variety of new problems they would have to contend with in creating lots of different species available to the PC...I mean, Turian alone would introduce a persistent voice issue.

this stupid rivalry between the fanbases (that both sides are encouraging) is a waste of time.

I agree. Though I do understand where this rivalry comes from. BioWare and CD Projekt RED do try to make the same types of games and especially Dragon Age has a lot in common with The Witcher though I'd argue there is also plenty of unique stuff in both DA and TW to set both franchises apart.

But ultimately both companies try to make western RPGs with compelling characters and a 'choose-your-own-adventure'-type of narrative so it's perfectly reasonable to compare both companies and their games. What isn't reasonable however is suggesting that one should only be able to enjoy BioWare games or CDPR games. This type of brand loyalty is ridiculous.

I am not going to be loyal to any one company or game series and I will always criticize games or aspects of games that I feel need to be criticized.

The Witcher is no exception to that. People on the BSN might not realize it, but I criticize The Witcher just as much as I criticize Dragon Age or Mass Effect. But people who only go to the BSN won't see that because I post my criticism of The Witcher on The Witcher forums, not here on the BSN.

I just hope we can switch between squadmates this time around. A simple change, but a good change, if you ask me.

@Daisy Spirits are not a civilization in Thedas, which is why we can't play as them.  Every race I mentioned for ME, and with the possible exception of the Vorcha, has it's own unique government and cultural structure.  A few wouldn't be available obvious animation reasons, such as Hanar or Elcor, but otherwise, it seems like there is too many races to offer a selection.  I thought ME's structure with Shepard was great, and out of all of my complaints about DA2, having Hawke as a set hero was not one of them.  It fit the story of one human in Kirkwall and the impact that s/he had.

I figure that if it fits the story, and has room for some personality options, and makes the most sense for telling a set trilogy, then why not?

Well, actually they are. Or at least Fade entities have some sort of civilization since they have organized hierarchies. We've seen this since DAO. But I was just using them as an example of a 'race' that isn't allowed as an option.

If this move to Andromeda is a permanent one, then no they won't. At least not for long. Different cultures living together causes to an extent a homogenization of the separate cultures. Like for example how the culture of the Dales and the culture of humans created the City Elf culture. Plus Bioware can just choose which ones they want to allow.

Shepard and Hawke are my least favorite Bioware protagonists, so the new character being like them is bad news.

I was disheartened. Not really. The Turian voice filter can be activated if the person chooses Turian. It's not that complicated. Same with Salarian, Quarian, etc.

How can you not love Sarcastic Hawke? He was the best BioWare protagonist. It was as if he was aware that he's the protagonist in a horrible game. Loved that dude and his smug trollish remarks.

It might not be complicated, but I imagine that it would be time consuming. And it isn't like the voice would be the only issue.

Then there's the slight movement differences between the races

Quite easily.

I'm guessing you are referring to animation? They could always just use the races that use the same animation skeleton as humans. Asari, Batarian, Drell, and Human all use the exact same animation skeleton in the games. Then use the race voice filters for the Batarian and Drell, and add the face animation of the races and voila, four races that are available to be played.

Me, I'm the kind of guy who goes out of his way to avoid playing humans in most games, with DAO being an exception, but still, I just don't see it as being viable in a Mass Effect video game outside of the multiplayer.

Let them put out a Mass Effect tabletop rpg with all the species being playable. I'd be all over that.

I mean, yea, they could have asari, batarians, and drell playable with minimal animation issues because they're all roughly the same size and shape, but I don't see anyone being satisfied with that selection.

I'm actually surprised there hasn't been a tabletop rpg made for Mass Effect, there's one for Dragon Age I believe.

Same, actually. There are a couple of fan-made ME tabletops but I tend to avoid those.

Of course, the DA rpg still hasn't made qunari playable the last time I checked, so my interest in that hasn't been particularly heavy.

I don't blame you. Are the qunari not available? That sucks, hopefully they'll change that since we got to play one in Inquisition.

Actually after posting that I double-checked. They became playable in the set two player's guide. Might need to pick that up sometime if I can find it for cheap; Green Ronin tends to charge out the ass.

Maybe Bioware could create DLC like in DAO where we main one of our companions for the DLC.

I always thought it would be cool if Bioware did a series of DLC's where the various multiplayer characters were used in brief single player stories showing other sides to the war and letting us cut loose with some of the more out-there multiplayer characters in a single player story driven environment.

The RPGs Bioware tell are about telling a story where the player shapes events.

Yea... except we really don't shape much of anything for the most part.

But back to the subject. I really don't understand the whole "relatability" angle as to why ME should stay human centric. It's sci-fi/fantasy. If anything i should relate to the protag's character as opposed to their individual race. Shepard was human and I didn't relate to him in any way whatsoever.

Also, I've seen Skyrim thrown out for having multiple options and less story. If anything, I'd blame that more on the purpose of the series as being mainly sandbox than having multiple races. Nothing about Skyrim really says: story first.

Not really. if I base it on my experience playing Bull in DAI.

Bull played not as a Qunari, with the Qun perspective but rather with a human cultural background. Nonsensical, of course. Any European, Asian or Indian, for example, coming over to North America as an adult will bring their cultural background and speak with a heavy accent. Not so Bull.

This was a total break from the Lore as found in DA:O. Unless you played him as a romance toy, Bull was written badly and voiced with an American accent at that. I didn't even bother leaving Haven before I re-rolled my character.

Now Sarah is different. She is her very own character.  So, unless a character is written from an alien perspective and voiced differently to add to the alieness, I say no. Even if well written, future writers need to continue that alien cultural background which can be difficult for a new writer to grasp.

I hope, OP, this is what you implied when discussing playing as an alien. Otherwise, you might as well play as a human dressed up in an alien custume.

I have mentioned earlier in the thread (though I should really edit and put it into the OP) that I would like if alien options were to become available to play as that I would want it as more than just a skin change so its not just like playing as a human. At the time I suppose I figured that it went without saying that I would want actual effort put into it and have it be treated differently than a human protag otherwise there wouldn't be a whole lot of reason to bother making an alien protag in the first place. If playable species or even an alien protag were to be part of a future game I would very much like them to stick to their lore and culture part of the reason it appeals to me personally is because I would love to play from that perspective. I hope this clears up what I meant I usually have a hard time getting across what I mean^^;

While I don't agree that DA2 was a horrible game, I share the sentiment in loving sarcastic Hawke. S/he was one of those rare protagonists that consistently left me amused, whereas others rely on the companions to get amusing troll-ish dialogue, along with a particular glee in the grisly adventures.
