What do people consider the best weapons? I have all the single player DLC
Any point using an SMG for a soldier?

Avenger and Predator!! ![]()
Here is my list:
AR: Phaeston or Argus
Sniper: Black Widow (or Mantis X)
Shotgun: Raider
SMG: Locust
Pistol: Suppressor
That said, I don't have N7 weapons and weapon pack DLCs. From what I've seen, DLC weapons outclass all the mentioned ones.

SR: The Black Widow (for now, I didn't use all of them)
Shotgun: I haven't the slighest idea, never used them.
SMG: definitely Locust. With the Stability mod especially, you can fire non stop almost.
Pistol: Scorpion or Carnifex (Paladin)

Claymore is the only gun you need. Let the High Lord help you, as he has helped many!
Though Venom is pretty fun too... ragdolling phantoms never gets old.

The majority of my playthroughs I've used the Mattlock with no problem. Tried the others, but will stick with the Mattlock except when playing as a Vanguard or Infiltrator

Sniper Rifle : Black Widow VII for NG, Widow VII/X for NG+ (Valiant used to be my fav until I got the hang of the one-shot kills for Insanity. I reserve Javelin and Krysae for Garrus. BW/W is orgasmic to my ears)
Heavy Pistol : Suppressor ftw... or in ME2; Phalanx
Shotgun : Still finding the right one for ME3.... Currently, I like Graal Spike Thrower for Vanguard. Geth Plasma Shotgun is epic in ME2
SMG : Blood Pack Punisher for Adept
AR: I don't know.... hardly use it except for giving them to the squad. James/Ash with Mattock. Garrus with Phaeston. Kaidan with Lancer. Javik with Particle Rifle.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like there are a lot of different opinions ![]()
I think the right weapon probably differs between squadmate or main character and it can also depend on the class and whether you're worried about weight and cooldowns or not. Squadmates don't care about ammo shortages and are less concerned with accuracy, for example.
I haven't tried importing an ME3 character yet so I've not unlocked upgrades beyond level V and I already got my Insanity achievement so I'm doing the rest of my run-throughs on hardcore, as I'm more interested in the story differences than anything else.
I remember being very fond of the Black Widow (spectre version) for my Infiltrator but that takes a while to unlock so I've tended to go with the N7 Valiant for my squad for most of my runs. I did try out the Krysae on my last run as a Sentinel, because it's not as heavy and I found it very effective against armour. Initially I was using the Indra because it doubled up as an assault rifle and was also pretty light.
I agree with the suppressor. It was only on my last run-through that I realised how good it was but with the armour piercing mod it tore through armour like nobody's business!
The stats for the N7 Eagle always seemed to be best (until the suppressor is unlocked) and it's incredibly light so I've always preferred it for squad mates like Liara.
For AR's I found the N7 Valkyrie to have the best stats for squadmates who don't care about weight but then when the Revenant turned up it seemed like that was pretty good too. I haven't tried either myself as I was using the Geth Plasma Rifle on my sentinel.
When I wasn't worried about weight I always felt the N7 Crusader was the best shotgun. It packed a big armour-piercing punch. On the other hand, I don't think I've looked at the Raider. Turns out it only turns up in the Leviathan DLC and my early run-throughs didn't have access to it so I've not noticed it up to now. Looking at the Wiki I will definitely have to give it a try.
Stats-wise I have never seen a better SMG than the N7 hurricane but I've always just given them to squadmates as I've not used SMG's on my main character. I never saw the point of using an SMG when you can use an AR!
I guess my problem is I rely on the stat bars too much. When you actually use the weapons they often have little quirks which go beyond the pure stats and I never really spend much time experimenting. The Scorpion is the most obvious one. It's a very different experience to your regular pistol and can be really useful against things like Brutes where you really don't want to be standing still and firing. Just fire a few shots when he's not looking, then run away while the little bombs do their thing ![]()

The Hurricane and Eagle are the only N7 weapons I regularly use. Their are better ARs than the Valkyrie, like the Lancer or Harrier. The Piranha is a decent shotgun. I used it some in MP, but I generally don't use shotguns in SP. The Venom is a very nice shotgun for taking out groups of mooks if you don't mind the weight. I think there are better options than the Valiant. It will depend on what you are after.
Looking at the bars for comparison is hardly ideal. Here is a google doc showing the actual numbers for every weapon. Use the multi-player stats since those numbers were used to update single player in the last patch. The exception were the Lancer and Suppressor. Here are their stats:
Lancer I - X
Damage: 82.2 - 92.2
Weight: 1 - 0.5
Mag Size: 38 - 57
Rate of Fire: 600
Suppressor I - X
Damage: 383.3 - 412.2
Headshot Damage Multiplier: 4x
Weight: 1.25 - 0.7
Mag Size: 6
Max Spare Ammo: 30 - 40
Rate of Fire: 600

"Best weapons" are usually down to preference.
If it helps, Athenau played around with all the weapons and ranked them in this thread: Post Patch Weapon Ranking.
Any point using an SMG for a soldier?
Two of the most powerful and damaging automatic guns in the single player campaign are SMGs: the Blood Pack Punisher (DLC) and Hurricane (Collector's Edition/modding).
Also, endless flame-rain:
