Hi, I want to gather your SOULS oppinions about the 4x RTS Aspect of Mass Effect Andromeda.

For starters RTS means a Real Time strategy game where you command units and basically micro manage your way in order to achieve a desired result.

Famous RTS Games includes Starcraft, Civilization series, Rise of Nations, Battlerealms and many more.

[...] EXPLORE, EXPAND AND EXTERMINATE. [...]

For one, you forgot exploit. It's called 4X, not 3X, just a little correction.

Second, since when is the civilization series RTS? I'm sure you've got to have that mixed up with some other series, because I don't know anything about a Civ RTS spinoff.

I wouldn't mind but It would probably end up a tad simplistic when the main focus is a TPS RPG.

For it to be fun to play on its own, id need depth similar to what is found in EU4 and hearts of iron 3, and I'm fairly sure that wont be an option. But if even a simplistic version gets more people into playing 4x games in general, that is a good thing.

Not surprising after EA killed off the franchise.

There were great C&C games under EA. Generals and especially Tiberium Wars.

I would definitely love some sort of strategic aspect to the game. I actually thought that DAI was going to have something like this. I prefer turn-based strategy games although I haven't played one since (gasp) Masters of Orion 2 (I think). The main problem I can foresee in implementing this is that it might be hard to integrate the rpg narrative aspect with the progress of the strategic aspect. Assume for the sake of argument that the completion of the game is defined as "you beat the bad guys". Well, what then of someone who is terrible at the strategy aspect and has failed on all fronts strategically? How would the rpg victory interact with this strategy failure? like I said, I haven't played any strategy games for a long time, so there may be ways based on newer strategy games (newer in my case being anything in the last mumblemumble years.)

Yeah, and then came Twilight. And then came Generals 2 and pretty much everyone participating in the alpha was praising the game. And then EA shut down the studio over night, developers one day went to work to see the doors shut and EA tried to shoehorn its corporate shenanigans by passing blame on the community saying "it wasn't the game you wanted" despite that being utter nonsense. I was in the alpha. I have played the game, I have read the alpha forum and player feedback ... and I've read the response from the laid-off developers after the entire community had a collective question mark over their heads upon the news of the cancellation.

I'm not saying there was no good CnC after EA acquired it. I'm saying that EA killed the franchise and that they did. I don't know the real reason, but I know with 100% certainty the reason they gave to its fans is pure BS.

Yes. I guess it was "..too hard to learn", for the console market, according to some senior EA exec.

Well, I haven't yet seen someone come up with an efficient UI for RTS games for controllers. Which is primarily the reason why RTS games on console are more or less a lost cause, the input device is simply not made for the complexity your standard RTS control scheme requires.

Maybe, just maybe, now that keyboard+mouse are finally becoming a thing for consoles we can see console games with more complex UIs and a surge in games that previously didn't work well due to such limitations.

Who knows, maybe EA will dust off the CnC franchise once they smell money again, though I fear it will be too late for some nice Tiberian universe games. Joe Kucan ain't be getting younger.

Eh, I'm more perplexed in how Civilization got on the list of RTS games. The exploit thing was just a trivia correction.

Ha, those people were talking nonsense. Civ is a turn-based strategy. Well, now you know better :)

All this talk of turn based strategy and Mass Effect makes me wish that we could have a game that was just that.  :crying:

I know that XCOM 2 will be releasing with a full development suite and modding capabilities. No I am no modder by any stretch of the imagination, but I am expecting to see a Mass Effect total conversion for that game; they better remember to add in recruitable/playable Rachni though

Afaik CiV has a ME mod. But the gameplay difference between Civ and XCom is night and day.

You know, RTS mixed with Third Person Shooters have worked at least once. Take for example this gem:

256px-Giants_Citizen_Kabuto_Box_Cover.jp

Extremely fun one, developing a pre-positioned base while defending agains't attacks with fast movement mechanics. It isn't Starcraft, but it works.

Also, I do think Bioware missed an opportunity here with DA:I to incorparate some RTS mechanics.

It could be possible to get to victory with rpg missions that are only accessible at those conditions in the 4X. Divergence in story line, if continuity is a consideration, can be removed by limiting the minimum victory threshold in the rpg to a keystone mission.

As long as they are restricted to the standalone MP game, I am fine with it. ;)

This

But Single player.  If it's a stand-alone off-shoot of an ME game, I'd love an RTS ME.  Not into MP in it though.  But as far as the main game? no.  Keep the main series as it is.  But yes I'd love some off-shoots of ME in various genre's

Specifically I'd LOVE a Mass Effect game done like X-COM: Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within.
