Missile defense is rather misleading. Fighters carry disruptor torpedoes, which are launched at a ship and then explode on or near the kinetic barriers. They use a mass effect field to impart butt loads more kinetic energy than the missile itself normally would which causes the kinetic barriers to collapse from being overloaded. Since GARDIAN tech is highly accurate but quickly overheated, you fire a swarm of missiles at a single target, assuming that eventually, one will get through. It's not the most brilliant tactic, but apparently it works.
Apparently Missiles are used in the ME universe

Advanced torpedoes (like the one fired by the Normandy) might have their own shields, who knows? Also, you can probably overwhelm the laser systems, Macross Missile Massacre style.
But it's a fair point. I'm glad someone cares about technical details in the game. I don't think we need more technobabble, just more precise descriptions of weaponry and effects.
I whole heartedly agree. When ME is a character driven story its backdrop is one of Epic Space Opera imo.
Knowing how battles take place in it help understand where different factions come from and helps gives you as sense of what they are like.
