I wouldn't call it useless on NM. It can do well on NM. I wouldn't be the least bit shocked if she got buffed up soon though.
Why would you play assassin on nightmare + beyond?

If you have hakkon and savage thorn daggers .
Use deathblow to kill everything... But yes the margins of error is very small.

I don't know why people would play this class at all, given that she has a terrible XP output.
It is a fun class.
Thank you for reiterating that it needs an XP generation boost.

But... What is fun if not XP earning/Promotions grind? Have you guys discovered some other type of fun that I am not aware of

I ground out the 250 wins and I am never touching it again.
Hidden Blades was fun. Nothing else was really.

Damn, son.
Even if they were 250 consecutive victories, that's what I call a trooper.

Assassin is great on nightmare if you have 200 stats and hakkon dagger.

I want to go on record saying that the assassin is the worst character in the game. The only thing she can do better than anyone is kill one target then die. She doesn't scale with difficulty. She requires more work for less payoff. There are some that can do well with the assassin but I sure can't. It's sad because in threatening she feels like a monster, but it just doesn't scale well.
Xp is Bad.
Survivability is Bad.
Burst is good but very bursty and at higher difficulty burst is not enough to get the kill which hinders all her abilities (deathblow, Dance of death, IWNH)
I just don't see her point.

Having been involved in a lot of those assassin games, let me say, I didn't have fun and I wasn't even playing the assassin! ![]()

I don't have 200 stats (wish I did) but do have Hakkon's dagger. Since had finished her banner while ago I mothballed her. Since this thread, I took her for a spin and promoted her, played her for 3 runs in NM, using Hakkon's Dagger and Savage Thorn. Enemies didn't go down in 1-shot but I went into stealth, Hidden Blades upgraded followed by Twin Fangs and then into stealth (I was never here passive) or used flank attack to go back into stealth. Most enemies went down by that combination including despair demons (if they had barrier another round). Playing as typical assassin going after high value targets in stealth DD, Venatori Spellbinders, Mages and Archers, Red Templar Shadows, Horror and Knights (harder than the Horrors) and Archers. My assessment is she works well in NM and if she is buffed in any way she would be powerful character in NM. I don't know about HB, that would bring it up another notch.Assassin is great on nightmare if you have 200 stats and hakkon dagger.

I really like the assassin: Since DA2 I always played an assassin in the single player and without doubt she was a killing machine in DA2. In the DAI SP she is kicking ass too, even on nightmare difficulty, but since there the amounts of enemies are far, far more manageble than like 40 (!) or more enemies in the MP, she can thin out enemy rows much easier.
But unfortunately she lacks survivability in the MP. Stealth alone won't keep you alive all day long, since you might run into a random arrow shot or dragon breath or magic mine at some point, that wasn't even directed at you, but kicks you out of stealth anyways. Fallback plan and Evade aren't bad defensive options, but then you have to sacrifice 1 more of your 4 ability slots for a defensive maneuver, leaving you with only 2 offensive options. Because almost every assassin player and guide I know urges you to use Hidden Blades, which of course is a crazy good ability, this leads you to only 1 other attack you can take with you and this is the point were she suffers for NM. But HB has a really long cooldown, so the other skill have to make up for it,
Let's say you take Twin Fangs: it does a decent amount of dmg if you attack out of stealth and from behind but its weird, unpredictable hitbox can screw you up fast. If you miss it right out of stealth, you lose 50% dmg bonus, plus eventually the guaranteed critical hit, so you will defenitely not be able the enter stealth again, because you couldn't do enough damage to kill your target.
Let's say you take Deathblow: Great dmg potential and at close range very safe hitbox, but you have to get your enemy down to 50% life. Which attack should you use til then? Autoattack? Leaving you in sight in therefore vurnerable? Or wait for your teammates to lower your target under the 50% threshold to finish him off?
Another skill like Spinning Blades or Shadowstrike? No, they don't make up for it.
That's the point: If you want to stay alive as an assassin on NM, who have to
- either constantly standing by your teammates, hoping that your support bro will shield your every time, you come out of stealth, try to attack and kill a target, if not you can use the 2nd defensive ability (like fallback plan) to save your ass once.
- or try to seperate yourself from your team, killing only low health based, but potentionally dangerous enemies like archers, mages etc. on which you will defentely more than just Hidden Blades and 1 other attack for, leaving you only with Stealth as defensive option.
The great amount of enemies and therefore the potentional unavoidable attacks (Pride Demons lightning balls, Venatori Mage lightning spells, stupid perceptive Hyenas...), that you can't evade forever, will get you hit unintentionally sooner or later, draging you out of stealth into your death.
I won't say that she is unplayable on NM difficulty; I have to try it out some time soon, since I got the Hakkon dagger yesterday, but I really think she probably suffers the most from the heighten HP pool of the enemies and her lack of ability to compensate 1 or 2 mistakes, in comparison to any other class. Unlike the archer, who cleary is a glass cannon, the assassin cannot stay the whole time next to his beloved Keeper or Elementalist, hoping to be in range of the next barrier cast, because of her need to be close to her target. To heighten her dmg output, so that she can kill faster on NM, would probably unbalance her totally for lower difficulties, making her into a killing spree predator drone. So I'm not really sure what to do, to make her more viable on NM.
Give her 10% Heal on Kill per default, make her Stealth invincible for 1 enemy attack or shortly after the enters/leaves stealth (about 1 second or so).... don't know.

To have the Assassin scale better for most of the community, she needs a buff/adjustment.
Give her IWNH for free as an innate ability so we don't have to spend so many skill points to get it (I can't get many of the great damage passives because it's so far down the Stalker tree, and on the other side of Fallback Plan, which most would consider the worst ability in the game)
Or put IWNH somewhere else in the tree (swap it with Bloodthirst or Evasion) or make it part of Stealth's upgrade.
Or decrease the cooldown on Stealth.
Update Stealth so enemies can't see her as easily.
Fix Easy to Miss/Threat so that enemies don't notice her as easily.
Side note for the Hunter, I really wish he had IWNH... Man, that'd be wicked cool.

Hidden Blades was fun. Nothing else was really.
I stopped playing my Assassin after 4 Promotions, not touching that thing again. My second least promoted character is the Reaver at 23 total if I am not mistaken.
I love Hidden Blades. Gladly there is a SP mode in this game for me to have fun with it ![]()
