Nouns such as 'dog', 'human', or 'cat' aren't supposed to be written with a capital letter. Why do people think it would be any different for 'elcor', 'hanar' or 'volus'?

This is probably the first I've ever seen the discussion of capitalizing alien species names. I always use lower case. It just makes sense.
