So even if this is set somewhat in the future, EDI and the Asari (Liara!) in general should be around long enough for a (probably DLC) cameo at least :) I'm hoping for a background name-drop on the fate of the old crew, even just in the lore/codex.

With the new galaxy, however, and enough comments from the dev's, I wonder what kind of completely new villain/big bad will be present in the Andromeda galaxy. With the opening trailer in mind, 'we' might be the big bad - piracy was alive and well in the original trilogy, and a claims race on planets would have to be in the works if it the tech to travel to Andromeda isn't too restricted. Which would make it the Wild West of Mass Effect.

Thoughts?

With the first part of your post, there is one major problem:  Both EDI and Liara could be dead.  EDI is dead if the player picked Destroy and Liara could have died in Harbinger's beam in London (low EMS.)  There might be something that sneaks in here and there as Easter Eggs, but I wouldn't expect anything else.

The following is considered rumor, and should be taken this with a grain of salt.  Nothing has been confirmed by the developers as of now.  This is supposition and rumor based upon a reddit leak from a few months back.  Please bare that in mind as you read this.

If the leak is correct, the villains are going to be a race called the Khet. From what I can gather so far, there is going to be one race that helps and guides us, and another equally powerful race that is trying to destroy us.  Some speculate that this "benign" race is going to be the reason why we can get to Andromeda, all while the Khet is trying to prevent us from settling there.  New tech abounds thanks to these two races.  I'm sure other posters are going to fill in some blanks that I might have missed.  I have to restate that this is all rumor and/or a reddit leak as well as the BSN tossing around ideas.

To add to what Natashina said, it's also possible that the game will take place thousands of years from the time of ME3, If that's the case. Liara will be dead. Edi could still be alive though since she's an AI.

Also, I remember one of the producers of ME say that people should save their ME3 save files.

EDI is an AI that has a lot of Reaper tech in her coding, just like the geth.  The chances of her surviving are very low, if not nonexistent.  I say this as a fan of hers.

Besides, that would bring in a window to ask about the endings.  EDI would have been there, after all.  Same with Liara.  The developers seem to be exercising extreme caution to avoid the endings.  If Liara or EDI is around, then the players would want to ask about the end of the Reaper War.  A simple, "I don't remember" wouldn't work for either of those two characters.  So the chances of them making a direct appearance are very slim.  I could see them getting a mention and/or a codex entry though.

As far as saving the files, I have a feeling that they are going to do something like the DA Keep for future ME games.  It prevents save corruption, as well as it would make it easier transferring the data from one engine (Unreal) to another (Frostbite.)  At this point, it should be "Remember your ME3 choices."   :P

This is the third thread asking about Liara in ME:A. Answer is still no.

Asking for EDI is a nice touch but ... she's even more unlikely to survive than the blue writer's pet.

Why are Edi's or the Geth's chance of survival low just because they have some Reaper tech?

I agree that the devs probably want to keep as far away from ME3's endings as possible.

My point about the save files was that the devs are considering transferring playthroughs from the ME trilogy - so they've already set themselves up for having the choices in those playthroughs affecting the game in some way.

I like Liara, quite a bit.  However, just like with Shepard, I feel like Liara's and EDI's stories have been told.  The Reapers are defeated, somehow, and their parts are done.  Leave them be, for the sake of their fans and those that are sick of them (especially Liara.)  That also goes for the rest of the Normandy.  Every squad mate could have died during the events of ME3.  Even if they can only die during a low EMS beam run (like Liara or James,) it doesn't change the sad fact that they all could have died.

Huh, the more of these threads that pop up, the more reasons I can think of as to why cameos for ME:A aren't a good idea.

@Weskerr  More than just some.  That Reaper tech is what gave both the geth and EDI their individuality.  It's embedded into their coding and as much as part of them as your blood cells are to you.  It was sad, but it doesn't change what happened.  Like it or not, EDI (and the geth) are dead if the player picks Destroy.  I can find WoG for you that backs this up, if you want.  It might take me a few, but I can do it.

Agreed about the save files, but we should be very cautious as to what that means.  Also, when did they say, "Save your ME3 files?"  If it was back two or three years ago, before FB became mandatory for all EA games, a lot has changed since then.  It could be something as minor as a unique codex for all we know.  That's about what I expect at this point.  The devs have stated that they aren't going to touch the endings because, "Player choice is important to us."

Again, if EDI or Liara show up, then they would know what happened at the end of the War.  This will leave players wanting to find out the answer.  I can see the devs avoiding cameos of previous Normandy members due to that.  It sucks, but that's the way it's looking at this point.

Sounds like there isn't much point in saving your old files if they're separating this story from the last ;) thinking on it more, there was so much divergence possible from one plathrough's plot line to the next that it would be impossible to bring the majority of characters forward, or their political ramifications as a game-changing element to Andromeda for anything but the background lore. Which couldn't affect the new story too much, anyway; it would give the writers too much work.

Liara would love the archaeology aspect to this story though, if the leak of old tech from the Remnant were a thing. She could be all geeked out and obsessing over them while still feeling burnt fingers over the Protheans :P

Back to the original point though; krogan genophage, Geth are sunk, Asari lost a chunk of space, Salarians could still be angry over the genophage... so many divisive or genocidal possibilities for races in the original trilogy, depending on choices. Saw references to the old Dark Matter theory in another post, would love to know why that sun was aging faster. I'm feeling a little Mordin coming on, throwing thoughts out.

Read the leaked poll. It gives you the premise of the game.

I sincerely doubt that the poll was legit, Bioware in all their years of game making have typically been too secretive to let out so many unnecessary plot details in a random questionnaire.

Here's the supposed leak in it's entirety.  Again, take it with a grain of salt.  Besides, all it takes is one person to ignore/not see a NDA to start a leak.  Bare in mind, this was before BioWare confirmed that we were going to a different galaxy.  Also, note the use of the phrase "far removed by time and space from Commander Shepard."  The ME team used almost those exact words recently and this leak is from back in April.

https://www.reddit.c...vey_about_mass/

This is from the story section:

The next Mass Effect game takes place in the Helius Cluster (a cluster of 100s of solar systems in the Andromeda Galaxy), far removed by time and space from Commander Shepard’s heroic acts and the final events of the Mass Effect trilogy. You are a pathfinder, a combat trained but un-tested explorer leading an expedition into the Helius cluster to establish a new home for humanity. As you explore this sprawling series of solar systems (over 4x the size of Mass Effect 3), collecting resources and building colonies, you will encounter the savagery of untamed lands in the form of cut-throat outlaws and warring alien races. To survive and colonize the wild reaches of space, you will need to grow your arsenal, your ship, your crew and make strategic (and often uneasy) alliances to fight against increasingly menacing foes. Along the way, you will encounter the remains of a once powerful and mysterious alien race, the Remnant, whose forgotten technology holds the key to gaining power in this region of the galaxy. As you uncover who the Remnant were, and the mysteries their ruins contain, you are drawn into a violent race to find the source of their forgotten technology that will determine the fate of humanity.

Ah, but Liara could be depending upon the EMS, as some folks like themikefest have pointed out in other threads.

Agreed on the second part.  It's time to let ME3 go (and no, I'm not posting that gif) and see what's ahead.

edibot is fried when destroy is picked

liara is killed on the beam run if ems is below 1900 and if ems is below 1750, she could be dead on the Normandy since the door doesn't open believing everyone onboard is dead if destroy was picked

This was confirmed to be in the game.  This is not the Citadel, nor concept art leftover from ME3.  This is for ME:A.

Spoiler

Having some sort of "ark" is seeming more and more likely.  Personally, it doesn't matter much to me either way.  It's a new game, and possibly a new trilogy.  I've accepted this, and I'm intrigued by where they might be going with this game.

Earth was more or less one big bunch of craters, and we took a lot of hits along the frontier planets. I don't believe the Milky Way is in dire trouble, but we're probably just looking to rebuild on less salted earth, so to speak.

I honestly didn't know this was a possibility, I don't think I could have stomached so little time on that game that my EMS would be that low. No offense to anyone who did, it's just me; I'm not a totally anal completionist, but I like to get the majority of it.

My survival-Liara is a glowy blue-green freak, with shiny green EDI. Yeahh I just can't see any of the endings being reflected in the new area. Oh well.

I am 99.9% certain the "leak" is leggit. Lets look at the clues...

  • Leak says the next Mass Effect will be set in Andromeda. We are currently in the Mass Effect: Andromeda Forum.
  • Leak made special note of a biotic female named Cora and a Krogan named Drack. Trailer depicts a female-humanoid carrying a pistol (biotics signature gun) and a Krogan.
  • Leak mentions enigmatic new race and technology. Guess what we see in the trailer? Shadowy goons and creepy alien-pillars.

So ether the "Leak" is leggit or the Joker who fabricated it did a very good job at guessing the premise of the next Mass Effect game.

The biggest issue with returning characters is that the Andromeda colonists probably leave before the Crucible fires. Fan speculation (got salt?) is that the series is being shifted to Andromeda to avoid having to deal with Mass Effect 3's endings.

If that is the reason for the shift to Andromeda, which seems very likely IMO, the colonists would have to leave before the Crucible fires in order for the devs to avoid having to address the aftermath of ME3's endings. That would rule out past and present squadmates from ME3, as they're all either on the Normandy or on Earth as the Crucible fires.

Here's the thing about this "leak::

1) I can find threads going back to 2012 that were talking about going to Andromeda, since it was the next closest galaxy.

2) A biotic is almost a given and they always use pistols.  Biotics are apart of what makes ME the setting that it is, more than the relays themselves IMHO.  The Krogan surprised me a little bit, but that was something that was discussed at length on the forums.

3) The conversation about the next ME having a new race with new technology also came up quite a bit on the BSN over the last three years or so.

The leak is looking more and more true, for sure.  I'm not going to deny that.  However, this person could have easily hung out on the BSN and gotten ideas from here.  Add in some rather generic race names (Khet and the Remnants?,) throw in the Horde mode from CoD and you have a very plausible sounding "leak."

Sorry to double post but...

Holly crap I thought that was the Citadel (barely glanced at the picture) but your right. It does resemble a space-station/ark, similiar to those depicted in Intersteller (spinning to simulate gravity, artificial sky to simulate day and night cycles, plenty of room for colonists from all races... and an Army to protect them.

Yep, that's new space station/ship that is hinted to be a homebase for the player.  That's why I think that some sort of "Ark" theory is likely to happen.

Since every character in the first three Mass Effect games has a chance of dying or has died, I don't want to see a repeat of Mass Effect 3 where they wrote alternate characters for every appearance because that character might have died in a previous game. I much rather start with a new crew and allies to avoid any possible baggage from the past games.

I do know that people have their favorite characters and I do too, but I rather not see them butchered again like in Mass Effect 3.
