Extremely late complaint, but, hey, you haven't released DA4 yet, so maybe...

Maybe, someone will actually listen and keep this in mind! Oh, and it's kind of more of a series of complaints, anyway. Petty compared to game-breaking issues and buggy DLC garbage, but it annoyed me enough that I had to make a thread. Should've done this sooner, but I didn't think of it. Skip to the bottom for TL;DR version.

Dear Bioware employee whose bright idea was to make every nameless mook spout inane nonsense at me as I pass by:

Don't do that.

Or, rather, don't do it again. I know this incredibly stupid decision cannot be undone, especially so late, but I'm hoping this "feature" stays out of future installments. The actual (though segmented) conversations are one thing, but more often than not, it's just crap like: "GOOD DAE." "SEE? WOT DID I TELL YOO?" "EH. WE'LL SEE." "[NASALLY LAUGH]" "WELL, LET ME KNOW IF YOU FIND ONE." "[CHANTRY PRATTLING]" etc.

Productive? No. It doesn't add immersion in the slightest. All it adds is my growing resentment of having to run through populated areas. Hey, know what else adds to my resentment of having to run through populated areas? The massive slowdown caused by the overabundance of entities in the area! Don't do that, either.

Know why I liked Denerim? It had plenty of people (on PC; sorry console scrubs, but you got the short end of the stick in terms of quality, which shouldn't even be surprising) and animals, some of whom even walked about, checking out stalls, and none of the mooks among them spouted nonsense at me. It was more or less nice and quiet. Barring the occasional conversations, I only had to listen to, "DWARVEN CRAFTS. FINE DWARVEN CRAFTS. DIRECT FROM ORZAMMAR. YOU WON'T FIND BETTER," and that amusing, senile old bat reciting the Chant incorrectly. Those are immersive enough for me. We've got the Chant, but recited in a way that doesn't make it insufferable to listen to, and we've got a good man trying to advertise his wares. If you don't want to hear him do that, you can simply run the other way around the stalls (or, you could run past him really quickly to make it sound like he's saying "DWARVEN CRAP").

Want to know something else I liked about Denerim? It didn't have an unrealistic amount of people crowding the place, loitering. Does anyone in Redcliffe have a damn job? And why is a village so densely populated in the first place? Shouldn't you have done that to tiny Val Royeaux instead? Even if a place has a dense population, literally everyone who lives there is not going to be crowding around the same area doing nothing; otherwise, we would see that in Val Royeaux.

Speaking of Val Royeaux, why are there so many "men" with "women's" bodies? What does this have to do with Val Royeaux, you ask? Remember that bailiff "dude" overseeing the near-hanging of one of Rainer's soldiers? That quest takes place in Val Royeaux, so there's your segway into this paragraph. How little care must one put into one's game that you don't even notice the fact that you've given males female bodies? My other example--and the first you'd see--is that skeptical "man" you can see randomly spawn in Haven, near the tavern, talking to that Chantry sister. There are more, but these are all I can recall at the moment.

Finally, why has every place from DAO been heavily redesigned to the point of being unrecognizable? I wouldn't have thought medieval/renaissance/poorly done fantasy people would possess landscaping abilities and resources. Weird.

TL;DR:

  • If it isn't productive or interesting/amusing, I don't want to hear it as I'm passing by (or ever)
  • Stop with the over-dense populations; it doesn't add immersion, it just adds slowdown (and people getting in my way)
  • Quality control: actually care about your damn product and stop with the female-bodied males (I'm assuming things were flagged incorrectly in these cases... Hey, know what else was flagged incorrectly but never fixed? The Skyhold Pajamas! [rants about that too])
  • Stop redesigning things that don't need to be redesigned (it feels as though BW is putting forth every effort of washing away any ounce of Origins (and some of DA2) that once remained)

Closing words: I don't know if there are any modders who traverse these forums, but if anyone can figure out a way to get the mooks to shut the hell up (excluding the actual somewhat important things like the people alluding to Cole's actions around Skyhold), that would be marvelous.

Just had to vent my grievances a bit. Thanks for reading!  :P Except for you, TL;DR people. You get nothing.

Sometimes the voice gender doesn't match the model gender. It's because every NPC is randomly generated, and sometimes it mismatches the genders.

The NPCs aren't always talking to the PC. Most of they time they are having conversations amongst themselves and you come within hearing range of the conversation as you run by.

That said, most of the single lines that you listed, "See, what did I tell you?" "Well let me know if you find one," and so forth do get really old after the 20th time hearing it and I do wish they were said with less frequency.

As I mentioned, the conversations we hear when passing by are alright. It's just the single lines that annoy the hell out of me. :)

The two I was talking about are not randomly generated. Yeah, it's weird to walk by a randomly generated group of mooks and hear mismatched voice genders, but I'm referring to an NPC that was actually made and has specific conversations. He randomly spawns, yes, but he is not randomly generated. As I said, I think flags were screwed up in these cases.

Well... after seeing the "mutant" dwarf "female" in Emprise du Lion, hearing one gender's voice come from the opposite looking gender will not even phase me. I'll just chalk them up to being more of Weekes' transgender characters I suppose.

That's not a bug, actually. They're just Orlesian.

I get fed up with hearing "Your worship" half a dozen times as I wander into Skyhold - it's especially annoying as dialogue as I understand it, is limited to a certain line count - I'd have rather used those half a dozen voices on some more dialogue with my companions or LI.

I rather enjoyed reading that, nicely written.
These "overheard" tidbits do bring back memories of fine dwarven crafts, and it's not pleasant.
Ambient noise in the game is wonderful, though.

B-but... you're invalidating my headcanon about that sergeant by the catapults who's trying to teach that recruit not to be a noob.

I'm joking, in case the smiley didn't make it obvious. I don't mind the ambient lines. I'd think it was strange if everybody clammed up when my Inquisitor jogged past. He'd start getting a complex.

I reeeeally hate that 'Fine Dwarven crafts' guy - so much that whenever I'm in Denerim, I take the long way round past the Chantry so I don't have to listen to him! XD

But it is memorable I suppose... LOL

I once ran through Redcliffe and heard "GOOD DAE" three times in a row. From that day forth, the ambient lines became my sworn enemy. Yeah, I was thinking about how this single ambient lines likely count for the word/line count which does not sit well with me at all. Some lines were just copy-pasted from ambient conversations and those are fine, but most lines were not. All that potential, wasted.

I love that sergeant. :D Heard their exchanges for the first time just recently! I'd prefer if the ambient lines were instead replaced with "ambient" conversations. Not the generic, boring ones, but rather the segmented ones we hear in multiple instances which actually have some discussion going on. Also, I'd like to be able to run around for more than two seconds without having to listen to someone prattle on.

I know your pain. It's good pain, though. :P

Dear Bioware:

Please include randomized Oblivion-style conversations in your next installment. I'm thinking something like this: "Well met!" "What's going on with you?" "I saw some mudcrabs bears by the water recently; I steered clear of them!" "Horrible creatures. I hate the things!" "[SNORT]" "What's the news from the other parts of Tamriel Thedas?" "I understand daedra demon worship has become increasingly prevalent in the Summerset Isles Tevinter Imperium." "The Altmer Magisters have powerful wizards. It could be a dangerous situation." "Be seeing you!" "Goodbye."

Great idea, right? Hire me as a writer!

Insincerely,

Cousland

PS: I'd still prefer this to the ambient lines.

PPS: Bring back DWARVEN CRAFTS. FINE DWARVEN CRAFTS. DIRECT FROM ORZAMMAR. YOU WON'T FIND BETTER.

PPPS: Why won't you return my phone calls? :^(

Oh god now I remember in that otome game where I screwed up by getting on one's dude's route and he decided to go all crazy jealous on me because I was chilling with rabbit dude and she couldn't talk about it with him BECAUSE HE WAS CRAZY. Was still crazy in his good end but they were crazy together? Honestly I kept screaming for her to run but she wasn't listening.

I wanna see BioWare actually a yandere. Just for the NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Factor. Of course there should be plenty of warning signs for player's that don't want that to back out and should be a bonus romance but I wanna see that train wreck in action damnit. That'd beat the typical lying, spineless, "Oh I would've told you the truth but..." we get now.

Yes.

And OMG he was seriously stalking during the bad ending I was just sitting there like "wat. Seriously. Wat. What. What." My mind was so full of what. They reallly really really really nailed that feeling of having nothing left to turn in my god. He wouldn't you do anything in peace.

And yeah irl screaming in the opposite direction but in fiction I can't help it I have to poke. And watch and laugh as silly otome protagonist is a silly otome protagonist.
