By not using an exploit, choosing not to violate bioware's ToS, and deciding not to cheat I am better than the people who are using this bug and so are the many others who are deciding not to cheat as well.
I do not do it because it makes me feel good. I am bringing up the issue because what has taken me many months of work promotion wise is being accomplished in a matter of weeks. This is wrong, not equitable, and not fair to those of us who have played within the rules.
Touchy subject indeed, and while I can't speak for anyone else I do believe that judging other people's actions is an inherent part of being human. After all we have laws for our society for this purpose. While an extreme example, during the recent police
(always wanted to use this guy and now I can...lol) drama in some towns across the US some people who wanted to protest also chose to loot. I find those actions detestable, but that does mean everyone who committed those acts are horrible human beings.
In DAMP it's a game world, but real human feelings are involved because we make friendships and invest time. to some people time is more precious than it is to others, and for some since this is a game they feel it's somewhat separated from reality, it's a place to let you act differently than if you were in the real world performing the same actions. I do not believe that most if any of the people using the glitch would not help their fellow man if there was an accident in real life and they had the power to help. I do agree with Denrok though in that we are judged by our actions, and if your actions hurt others even indirectly then I would hope you took the time to put yourself in someone else's shoes and see if you would feel the same.
Typically when someone cheats they know it's wrong, they have guilty moments, but as a self defense mechanism they try to justify their cheating by saying things like "I'm not hurting anyone else", "its the Dev's fault", "It's just a game" or "I bought the game so I can do what I want" etc. First none of us own the game, that solely belongs to the Developer and whatever entities are part of the creation process. We all bought a license like one of my friends so aptly stated yesterday (Shout Meg!) and when we play the game we are beholden to the ToS we agreed to. If this ToS states the glitch is cheating then it is, and from what I read the term "Abuse" is key to determining who is actually cheating and who is just along for the ride so to speak.
Next, anyone that cheats, wither it's in a game or real life is hurting someone. They are also potentially hurting themselves as well, and it's not about some morale high ground. I honestly don't really care about the morale reasons someone either cheats or does not cheat, it's a the more basic instincts that I'm worried about. It's the selfishness that occurs when you cheat and when you lash out at people who cheat. This selfishness and it is selfish because doing the glitch does not benefit the community, it does not benefit your friends, it does not benefit any of the player base or the gameplay of DAMP. The only benefit doing this 2x glitch is self gratification, as harsh as that may sound. Also, the reactions to people who glitch can be selfish as well. I admit I am being selfish when I say I don't want others to glitch, as I care about the hard work I put into this game, but in the overall scope of things someone gaining 100 or 200 or 300 promotions does not and should not affect my enjoyment of the game. I can create my own lobbies, and play with friends that feel the same as me.
However, where the difference between the two sides does justify being a little selfish is that it will be the people abusing the glitch that hurts the player base or causes DAMP to change in such a way that fewer people want to play. That is where I will say I have a right to judge the actions of someone else, not the character, but the actions. As I have stated in a previous post I am no saint, and I do not advocate mass banning of the player base, but I also feel that everyday you have choices and people who consistently make the choice to do something that could lead to hurting others deserves some form of discipline.
I also agree with Proto that BioWare has a responsibility to be more proactive and clear on what the expectations for their game are. Just posting in the forum is not good enough, and while we all have an individual responsibility to read the ToS, it is unrealistic in our society to have this be the only form of communication on something that is clearly dividing the community of DAMP. It is really telling when more of the players who initially voiced against glitching are starting to glitch themselves. I doubt the game will crumble over this and go away, but there are a lot of good and fun people who are now being put into situations that should never should have been put in and either leaving or becoming so vocal as to further alienate an already dwindling player base.
I kind of wish that once BioWare knew about the glitch that they would have just added an XP bonus where you could go from level 1 to 20 even in a Routine match and higher, and then no one benefitted from the glitch because were all on the same page then, and gaining xp commensurate with out hours of played again. I'm sure that is unrealistic but it's the only way I could think of to nip this in the bud before it grew to such a big issue. As it stands now I'd say close to 90% or more of the player base has experienced the glitch even in the smallest amount, and somewhere between 40-50% are actively abusing it or did abuse it at some point. That is too large of a number to just ban everyone, at least on Xbone...
Please BioWare fix this ASAP! Grrrr...
(Ok so I really wanted another excuse to use an emoji)
