You do realize that some damage types can bypass Guard/Armor to deal direct damage to health, right?

Its clear that some attacks can bypass guard... and nothing seems to get past barrier. I'm sure there is a reason why rock-paper-scissors wasn't brought into the design of the various character's defenses...

 

Is it that barrier is cast by support classes, whereas guard is accumulated by defense classes?
