I think lore is one of if not the quintessential element to world-building when it comes to spinning a story, be it in a text adventure, a choose your own adventure, RPG, Science Fiction, Survival Horror, etc. If the lore is good, and the backstory makes sense for the frame of said story then you could possibly have a good game going (other factors not-withstanding).

I really like the lore of the Fable series; all 3 in my opinion were pretty great games however the most fascinating times have already occurred...some five hundred or thousand years in the past with the closing of the void, the fall of the Old Kingdom and the first use of the Spire.

The Elder Scrolls series has some fascinating lore in it, of course most of it is rarely witnessed on-screen or in-game and if it does it is greatly minimalized such as Alduin's powers and Dragon Breaks are used a lot to cover any discrepancies, etc.

I cannot say. I've always been fascinated by Halo and Mass effect alike, interested in Unreal Tournament and Gears of War and a few other titles like Zone of the Enders and Borderlands.

My vote goes to Dragon Age and Elder Scrolls. I spent a good chunk of time just browsing the wiki, reading up on stuff - and the worlds they've created are engrossing.

I'm also a fan of pre-WoW Warcraft lore. I'd love to see a WC4 that continues the story and disregards everything done in WoW. It won't happen, but still.

Among those I can currently conjure uo

Metal Gear

The Longest Journey (This particular adventure series have some of the most fascinating world building in its mixture of sci-fi and fantasy -- It's extraordinary)

Vampire Masquerade

Bloodborne/From Software Games (Bloodborne's grim Victorian-England-lovecraftian inspired world always struck me as interesting due to how these games choose to tell their stories ala Silent Hill, which is rather subtle and not necessarily through words or lenghty cutscenes)

Shin Megami Tensei

Silent Hill

Thief

BioShock

Borderlands

Fallout

Jade Empire (Might only be one game but that alone was enough to build a fascinating world based on the eastern cultural heritage and myths)

Dragon Age

KOTOR (I don't think I've been as fascinated by Star Wars lore as much as I did when I played KOTOR 2 and then 1st game)

I'd say D&D and Shadowrun, but their digital representations aren't always the best, I guess.
