Just beat Journey on PS4. I think, without having played it that it's superior on PS3 because they removed the motion blur in PS4 version and it's just a game where presentation is so, so important. Nevermind.

You know, when you just see something that really, strongly resonates within you as you're playing a game and it just automatically sends shivers up and down your spine? Sometimes it may just be the soundtrack in the game, and other times it's when the presentation, the game mechanics and sounds just all come together at the perfect moment. Here's my full list as I recall. Guilty pleasures included (and so you can scratch your head as to why I got chills from those games).

Games that have given me chills, at some point(s) during the playthrough:

The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time

The Legend of Zelda - Wind Waker

The Legend of Zelda - Majora's Mask

The Legend of Zelda - Link's Awakening

The Legend of Zelda - Twilight Princess

The Legend of Zelda - A Link Between Worlds

The Legend of Zelda - Skyward Sword

Mass Effect Trilogy

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Dragon Age Inquisition

Journey

ICO

Shadow of the Colossus

Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney

Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney - Justice For All

Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney

Apollo Justice - Ace Attorney

Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies

Hotel Dusk - Room 215

Last Window - The Secret of Cape West

Trace Memory

Sonic The Hedgehog 2006 (don't even ask!)

Mario & Luigi - Partners in Time

The Last of Us

Halo 3

Batman: Arkham City

Batman: Arkham Knight

Heavy Rain

InFamous

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs

Super Mario Galaxy

Crysis

Metal Gear Solid 1-2-3

Grand Theft Auto IV

Mario Kart 8

Metroid Prime

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Super Mario 64

Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic 2

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

NB: I have played all official Nintendo Zelda games. The ones I didn't list simple didn't make me have chills.

I think that may just be it. That's a lot of games too. Of course these aren't all games that I've played, just the ones I can say gave me chills in some fashion... and I crave for more gaming chills.

...so what are yours?

I saw you list the Persona games. I never understood what they were like, only that they're very well liked and since I liked Catherine A LOT, I've been on the fence about Persona for some years.

How is the story in Persona?

I saw you list the Persona games. I never understood what they were like, only that they're very well liked and since I liked Catherine A LOT, I've been on the fence about Persona for some years.

How is the story in Persona?

If you liked Catherine then you'll like Persona given its focus on stylistic-down-to-the-earth aesthetic, well designed and well written characters in a modern setting set up as a JRPG.

They are JRPGs mixed with elements from simulation games -- They are also spin offs of the Shin Megami Tensei games, which are dark JRPGs that delve into Lovecraftian-esque mythos, telling stories about morality and humanity usually in a post apocalyptic setting.

Persona derives certain elements from SMT, like the gameplay and mythological creatures from both Lovecraftian mythos and worldly religion, but instead does so through a modern Japanese high school setting -- It might seem less dark but once you truly come to understand the characters, the challenges they face and what the story tries to talk about, it'll suck you right in. It ranges in its discussion of mature subject matters that dictates society, usually Japanese society, such as gender-roles, social anxiety, the path from child to adult -- It does so through its main characters as well as the NPC characters you form relationships with through this "Social-Link" system much like how in Catherine you befriend the visitors of the pub, hear their life-stories that are all conspiciously related to overall theme of the game, which is a shared trait between all of the Persona games.

Don't let the high school setting scare you off as it is actually rather competently handled in the Persona games -- It feels authentic in its representation, like the P-studio team documented files, notes and true stories of what high school is actually like, and how it challenges the young mind in terms of everything it throws at you. It ranges from the serious to the less so serious aspects that exists around it

Persona, much like its sister series, isn't afraid of deriving inspiration from real-world philosophical writings in the handling of its story. It utilizes elements from Jungian psychology to frame its story in regards to the more supernatural aspects, and of course the more mature content. The demons, for instance, that you summon in battle are called Persona (which of itself is Jungian in both name and overall meaning/purpose here) as you utilize them to battle Shadows -- The opposite of a Persona, the suppressed desires and feelings of man that you have to vanquish. In Catherine you have the Nightmares, in the Persona games you have something different for each of them.

To put it shortly -- If you like BioWare games for their excellent characters and ability to truly draw you into its story then you'll like Persona.

Weird that it's a subseries to Megami Tensei. I heard the latest SMT for 3DS had an awful narrative though. Is Persona 3-4 noticeably better?

I wish I could play one of them on 3DS but I don't think that Persona Q looks very appealing at all.

To many to list. Two of mine that haven't been mentioned yet; Katawa Shoujo and The Walking Dead.

Persona Q is more or less a celebration of Persona 3 & 4 -- It might look cutesy but once you get to the dungeons like the Haunted House you'll change your tone along with the story truly taking a 360 degree turn near the end. The chibi artstyle is probably just to accomodate the limitations of the 3DS

Persona 3 & 4's style resembles that of Catherine in pretty much everything. Incidentally, I'll add Catherine to my list above now, lol.

To put it short -- Yes, Persona 3 & 4 is vastly better than SMTIV

Oh, and of course, one can't talk about Persona without mentioning its legendary soundtrack.

Oh, and you summon your Personas in Persona 3 by having your character shoot themselves in the head with gunlike objects. Awesome is what could summarily best describe that.

I really wish P3 and 4 were on PS4 then, or that P3 was on 3DS, because I don't want a PS Vita and I've been trying to make PS4 my main console that I have everything on, as opposed to PS3.

Maybe whenever Sony delivers their streaming thing, or actually implements backwards like sane human individuals, it'll be released on the PS Store for the PS4 or something.

I hope so. The exponentially increasing backwards compatibility on PS3 was the best thing about it. This PS Now thing is something I'm not gonna touch at all, on the other hand, so an alternative would be great.

The real reason is so that they can resell you the exact same games again in pretentious HD resolution; One must be extremely thick for not realizing that the PS3 and coincidentally the Xbox 360 has seen better days and probably won't last much longer before they stop working altogether, and then how will you play your old games again? If not buying them all over again or having the option of backwards compatability. Blergh

TW1 - them creepy sewers and caves. The haunting beauty of chapter 4.

RDR - among the best wilderness design in a game I've ever seen

ME1 - that final rush on the Citadel is superb, the highlight of the entire series.

TW2 - the Claws of Madness. Not just the quest itself, but finding out Loredo's mom was a tragic victim of war time circumstance.

Dishonored - when Corvo has to find his way out of the slums mid game. So well paced.
