In terms of atmosphere and exploration, the Hissing Wastes. Nothing beats a nuggalope around the desert under the moon, searching for lost dwarven treasure. In terms of plot, Crestwood. They really nailed the major side quest there; I hope they take their cues from it going forward. (And given that the Frostback Basin is similarly well-intergrated into the story, I think they will.)
I think The Hinterlands narrowly edges out Crestwood for being my favorite. No, seriously. There's just lots of stuff to do in The Hinterlands and it's nicely varied visually and terrain-wise compared to most of the other areas. Crestwood WOULD be my favorite, but parts of it are dull--it kinda feels like a couple of areas wodged together. I really like how it changes over from rain to sun although it's not clear how closing a rift could cause it to stop raining. ![]()
Fallow Mire is my least favorite, edging out the Exalted Plains because there are at least a few areas of the EP that aren't awful.

Storm coast forever. My first reaction was: "This game is awesome". The sea, cliffs, giants, dragons, darkspawn, iron bull... story wise it doesn't have much to say and maybe it's boring too, but I love that kind of scenary.

Hinterlands. Reminds me of the old DAO days.

Scenery: Storm Coast. I love the rain effects and the ocean. The lighting is my favorite kind of lighting: cloudy, but with the sun breaking through brilliantly when it wants to. Strangely, for a constant rainstorm, it doesn't look dreary to me. Likely due to the color and that sporadic sunlight. Its a light rainfall and I love it. I wouldn't love to be in it, mind you, but I love how it looks. ![]()
Story: Arbor Wilds. Temple of Mythal. Nuff said. The wilds is also my second favorite bit of scenery.

I still haven't been to Emprise du Lion, Arbor Wilds, Emerald Graves or Frostback Basin (despite 300 or so hours over many playthroughs). And I've only spent 20 minutes in the Hissing Wastes to get some schematics, so I can't really include that one. But so far:
Purely in terms of the environment and visuals: The Storm Coast. Inquisition does wetness really well and I loved the combination of the Giant's Causeway style stone pillars, stony beaches and Dwarven caves. Runner-up: Forbidden Oasis.
Story: Crestwood. Runner-up: Exalted Plains.
Overall I think Crestwood wins. Without spoiling anything, I really liked the changes that happened in the area and the story and characters were the most enjoyable out of the areas I've done so far.
I really have to ask......how and/or why would you avoid areas entirely? I cannot fathom playing that way. Not to knock your style, I'm just boggled and curious! When I unlock an area, I want to go there RIGHTNOW. Through one whole playthrough, and about 80% of a second, I've only put in somehwhat over half the playtime that you have, and I cannot imagine doing even that without all of the different areas.
As to my favorites, Emerald Graves is easily #1. Its beautiful and lush, which is such a big contrast to so many other RPGs these days where everything is bleak and dead. I do love that there is so much variety in the game though, and how each area has it's own story and purpose. Get bored in one place, and go to another.

Crestwood and Frostback Basin.
Same here. I love the atmosphere in Crestwood, and how it changes as you progress in it. Frostback is great, but I hate the perma-change after you do the full story there. It's such a lovely place before that. Honorable mention to Storm Coast. I've spent way more time than I had to meandering down the coastline, picking up herbs, and watching and listening to the angry sea.

While I enjoy the other areas, part of that is due to a change in the weather, day/ night setting, or some other alteration which is pleasing to me. Get tired of rain? Head to the desert. Tired of stumbling over roots? Desert! Getting annoyed by sand dunes? The Dales is a good answer. Etc.
Haven becomes a home with it's familiar houses, gardens, and layout, then is taken from me. No matter how much Skyhold offers, this former feeling is only replaced by a sense of vengeance, and wanting to assign some folks to whisk brooms....

I didn't consider Haven as a region in itself, but you're right. That's one of my favorites, as well, with its houses and its lake and its target practice druffalo valley.

It's because I still haven't finished the game yet! I've not even done Wicked Eyes Wicked Hearts or finished the Find The Warden quest yet. I have a really bad case of new playthrough-itis. I just love trying out new races and playing with the character creator - I've got more than 20 Inquisitors. I play the game regularly, but I have multiple characters that I plan on finishing the game with (at some point) all of whom I've put at least 10-20 hours into, going up to 115 hours for my main playthrough.
So I'm not actually avoiding visiting any areas, it's just that the time I've spent playing the game is spread across lots of different playthroughs and I play really slowly.

Oh ok, gotcha. After I got started, I just went with it, and played through making choices that felt right all the way through. On my second (incomplete) playthrough, I'm being as thorough as possible. Might do a third if there's some more really good DLC, but I'm not the type to just start over like that. Cool that we all have such different styles.

Not the Exalted Plains that's for sure....
My favorite would be The Emerald Graves followed by The Hissing Wastes.

My favored is definetly Storm Coast, its so atmospheric. I can just watch and watch how waves breakes on the rocks under the endless rain. Аll this wet stones and clothes on my team is very realistic. And when they put in such realisctic environment battle between dragon and giant, it makes astounding impression.

In terms of area narrative, Crestwood, no contest there.
For exploring, I like Western Approach, Emerald Graves and Hissing Wastes. Lots of dungeons to be found just through wandering around, not given by a quest NPC etc, I feel like these areas really reward exploration in a meaningful way.
For atmosphere, I like the Graves again, and the blasted look of the Plains. Also, Old Crestwood. Edit: Storm Coast is also lovely.
Edit: The Deep Roads in the Descent dlc is now my favourite area visually - some of the scenery is jaw-droppingly lovely.

All the rainy ones look terrific, I think. So Storm Coast, half of Crestwood, Fallow Mire. Storm Coast leads the pack, there.
Hissing Waste is beautiful. The other two deserts are the weakest links, though.

I'd say Crestwood because the story there is interesting. Can't pick Hinterlands because the generic quests there leave a sour taste in the mouth.

This is tough.
Not to be a pessimist, but all of the main areas were too empty for me - I'd like more story and meaty bits within these big explorable maps.
That said, here are the ones that come to mind.
Crestwood: I like Crestwood, but I sort of hate it after the storm stops...I love rain and storms. The rest of the area doesn't really impress me that much to be honest. But I had to mention it cuz of the weather. I also really like the underground portion even if it's short.
Emerald Graves: I LOVE the Emerald Graves. It's absolutely beautiful, I like the story that is happening in it, I love the atmosphere, and all of my spells are super-extra shiny because of all the shade!
Hissing Wastes: I didn't think I'd like this one; I'm just not that into deserts generally speaking. But the cool moonlight shining down on the area, the only sound the distant howling of a nocturnal predator and the hissing of sand blowing over rocks...the dim sparkle in the distance of a light...friend or foe? You aren't alone here, after all. It was just amazing. Such atmosphere that sucked me right in.
Arbor Wilds: I like forests, and I was bitter that we didn't get to fully explore the Arbor Wilds like we did the Emerald Graves. I actually like the Arbor Wilds more in terms of appearance and it would have been so cool to explore them more fully. Every moment walking through that level had me going, "Whoaaa!!!" at my surroundings.
Emprise du Lion: Really liked the visual design of Emprise du Lion, and it just played really well.
Places I wasn't so fond of....
Exalted Plains: I really, really hate the plains. I've just played them so much. The colors are washed out and unappealing, and I can't see a thing with the search button because of it. And it's all just flat and...eugh. They didn't do it for me at all.
Hinterlands: To be fair, I actually think the Hinterlands are actually one of the best areas. They have lots of character, npc's, story interwoven with the environment.... They're on this list only because I've seen them SO MANY TIMES FOR SO LONG.
If I had to pick just one favorite, I'd probably say Emerald Graves.

To look at I liked the Western Approach because it's the opposite of where I live (Alaska) and I love the desert. To play, I didn't like any of them.
