I don't mean to insult anyone in particular, but some of you guys are really hard to please. I honestly think that the majority of the game is beautiful, and I loved exploring the large parts to find out what was hidden in every corner.

Crestwood.
But honestly, the game would be more enjoyable if none of the "regions" were in the game. Or at least were wholly optional.

Why do you say that? You mean, rather that the game was one, big, continuous map instead? I personally think that the different maps give it a lot of character.

Hissing Wastes are my favorite place to go. Starry night sky, desert winds. Tier 3 schematics. And it is where all of my purple crafting material desires are met. It's a win win. Conversely I try to power through the Exalted Plains. I just... don't like it. One bit.

I mean I'd rather the game was just the main quests and companion quests, without the need to visit the areas to get the needed Power and XP to progress the story.

This! I don't mind the open world, but grinding side quests gets old for me, especially after multiple play-throughs. I'm more interested in running the main quests & companion quests again with different characters to see how people react when I'm a human warrior and then an elven mage the second time around for example. The dialog on those side quests however seems to be 99% the same, no mater your class or race.

I guess that's one of the reasons these forums are cool. We all look at things so differently.
For me, that would be such a hollow, disapointing experience. "Just the main story" would be like watching a movie to me. To me, I want the main quest to be no more than about 25% of the game. I love, love, love all of the exploration, mini quests and everything else that fills out the game. I'd love to have the game incorporate as much as possible of this into it. I want as much to see and do as they can throw at me.

Frostback Basin is just great. Beautiful environments, changing time of day during main quest, varied landscape an interesting missions.
I like Crestwood (smaller than most, but focused and with good main quest) and Hissing Wastes (searching for that Tomb is fun and rewarding).

I actually liked the Exalted Plains for its story. I go there just before I do WEWH and I feel like I've got more of a stake in the "peace talks" and more political weight to throw around the Winter Palace b/c I've dealt with the problems plaguing the armies in the Plains.
Also, my main is a Dalish elf and there's all those ruins there. I do love walking around and trying to piece together what some building may have looked like or counting the Fen'Harel statues and noting their locations. I mean, he's the Dalish equivalent of Satan cus of what he did to the Creators, and yet there's a statue of him practically every 50 feet, not to mention the GIANT one of him visible from practically anywhere in the zone. It fuels my theories that maybe he didn't become so reviled by elves till the fall of the Dales and the Ralaferin clan keeper becoming the sole source of pantheon lore.
Also, I don't see people mentioning the Forbidden Oasis much, but I think it really deserves a mention. Especially the oasis part of it. And I love how the oasis really is hard to distinguish from the surrounding cliffs if you go far enough out into the desert, just like the codex you can find near the furthest out landmark describes.

Hissing Wastes and Western Approach for me. I love desert regions in RPG games.

There's nothing in this area, except collecting Shards, and putting collected Shards into doors.

Oh, I wasn't saying it deserves a mention for story reasons. lol I just meant that the area itself has a real beauty to it in some spots.

You know can we submit the areas in Descent to the lift. I guess we have two new areas the.
Not saying either one is my favorite but they are worth considering.

The colors of the vegetation and rocks, the eerie sounds, the terrain all just made it feel very authentic. The quests were good too.
Too many bears, however.

Only along Bearspawn River Long River, though. And as a medium armor wearer, I did appreciate the consistant source of bear hide. lol

Now that I think about it, they probably named that movie after the Hinterlands.
I will say however that it's weird how the waves don't actually break on the shore. Thedosian physics probably

Which is why I think that making this zone optional is a wasted opportunity: making it the mandatory step to take before the ball makes so much more sense narratively.

That's the general issue with Inquisition's main story: all those regions are just wasted, because main missions mostly take place elsewhere. This entire world feels completely disconnected from the main story.
Exalted Plains should be a part of main quest, as many other areas.
