Best way to get advice is first tell us your character's level, class, specialisation and party members.

Also, it would be useful to know which specific encounter you're having trouble with.

With the information that I have, I'm going to have to say: Kill stuff before it kills you. That's really all I can do for you based on the information provided.

If you're talking about the final fight OP, I found confusion grenades really helped.

Also if your inquisitor is MoD, use that, or bring cole. MoD + Confusion grenades = magic against that final boss.

Here's a montage of how I soloed the entire Old Temple on Nightmare as a warrior, in case you're stuck before the final boss.

I just beat it on nightmare, with all trials on.
Heres what i did:

Party:

Cole - Potions: Might/Cold resistance
Stats: 50% cold resistance, 70% ranged resistance
90% armor pen, 200% crit bonus, leech life with poison, backstab, mark of death
Masterwork refined items, 2 daggers from Descent, both superb fire enchanted.
(he is for eliminating the 2 hander berserkers from behind efficiently)

Vivvy - Potions: Pitch grenade/Cold resistance
Stats: 200% barrier damage bonus, 50% cold/ranged resistance, static cage, barrage, barrier, dispel
Fire staff with superb spirit rune, refined battlemage armor with heal 25%
(she is to nullify the super annoying mages with cage+pitch grenade+dispel/barrage combo altogether)

Sera - Potions: Might/Cold resistance
Stats: 70% critical chance 90% armor pen, explosive arrows, full draw, caltrops and tempest fire.
Some op elven bow bith superb corrupting rune, refined prowler armor with gain 5 guard on hit.
(she is....for killing everything, seriously shes broken, can do 17 000 damage in base game easy, more than 7000 in temple)

Offensive 1Hander qunari inquisitor
Potions : Might/Cold resistance
Stats: 74% attack rating, high resist to everything, 20% critical chance, reaver abilities, purple warrior skills. aoe chain pull,
Everything revolves about stamina and short cooldowns.
Mace of mortalitasi with superb demon slaying rune, refined warrior armor. 50% attack speed belt.
(he is for making quick work of bowyers and stalkers.)

The cold resist potion wont give you an edge vs the enemies, but it will give you one vs the aoe cold that will affect you during the b oss fight. Build your focus during the temple run to at least tier 2, use it on Hakkon when he's about half hp, destroy his guard first, drop caltrops with Sera around him to keep the minions at bay (have immobilize trait on it). Cage leftovers with Vivvy.
Keep cole and blow skills on Hakkon's back, he has nonstop leech from his poison skill, if you have all trials on he will probably be the only one being at full health now.
Keep wacking him from the front with the inquisitor, ring of pain does nicely here since you have perma 1 hp (3400 dam/tick). Your guard rating will keep you alive if you can spam it quick enough. He will go down relatively easy from here.

The best way to beat JoH is to have created very good custom armor and weapons. Get the Aegis of the Rift ability as soon as you can. And in the Old Temple, you should try to beat Gurd Haroffson as quickly as possible. But remember to allow him to cast the freeze spells, since I think that counts toward the Firestarter achievement.

I used Rift Mage Inquisitor, Cassandra, Sera, and Dorian. Beat the 2H warriors first with some good rooting and damage tactics. Then get to the other side with someone before the mages start moving. Get near that one flame to keep the party warm. Then I cast Static Cage around the mages and had Sera shoot them as much as possible. Also Dorian used Immolate on them a few times, as did my Inquisitor.

Then when Gurd starts moving I had Cassandra draw his attention since she can block with her shield. Then I had Sera use Lightning Flask with an Offense Tonic and I switched to my Inquisitor so that Sera would just fire like mad into Gurd. Then when some of the enemies came up I used the Static Cage on Gurd and the nearby enemies, then Mark of the Rift, and then I had Sera take another Offense Tonic and use Thousands Cuts on Gurd. There was a point when the party needed to recover, so I had Dorian caste Haste, and Cassandra cast Rally, while my Inquisitor took the maxed out Regen potion and threw a Healing Mist Grenade.

Don't bother with the undead archers, since they just respawn. Just block them with the Aegis of the Rift.

It also helps if you have the extra abilities from Trespasser that are added to the skill and spell lists.

Just level up as much as you can (game max ) by that point and it's just a grind. I've done it a few times.... For me (Mage), Cass, Sera and Blackwall seemed to be the dream team.

For me the hardest part of all DAI is those damn demons protecting that cursed pirate treasure on the island in Hakkon. What a pain in the arse, takes forever.

I discovered that only warrior guard, not mage barriers, protect my group from the spellcasters. This is super important! You cannot win without plenty of guard-generating abilities!!!
