In term of content distribution, I feel like they should be more even. Liara seem to get a lot of attention, and there were a lot of backlashes calling it favoritism and such. She does the most throughout the entire series and maybe even more than Shepard since Shepard would have stayed dead if it wasn't for her. She has the entire DLC dedicated for her, she becomes the shadow broker and has information on everyone, she discovers the crucible, she oversees the crucible, the entire refusal ending is about her, she's the default character for everything if you don't have a LI. It seems like if there is a canon LI, it would be Liara.
Avoid making a single character overly important

Of course, if not for Shepard and the beacon, she'd just be a captive of Saren and the galaxy would be dead.
Why?
It would not of been hard to have the asari councilor tells us who to speak with who knew about the Protheans and beacons. T'soni was not the only one that knew about them and I'm sure not the only one that knew about Ilos

I don't approve of the idea that BioWare should carefully mete out romance content minute by minute in order to achieve a time quota which may or may not exist according to the BSN public.
That said, I believe that the LiaraxShepard narrative is the greatest love story to grace non-fiction, so there's a chance I'm biased.

I don't mind characters being important; I just don't like when writers play favorites, which I can't help but think was the case for Liara (as much as I liked her). A character can be important without being shoved down anyone's throat.

Of course, any character could literally be written out of the blue (no pun intended) to take Liara's place, but I don't see what the point of that would be. The whole prothean researcher persona was thrown in for a reason, and was part of the reason why the geth and that krogan merc were after her. The story frames Liara as essential to finding Ilos and that's really all there is to it. If another character existed that could help, they'd make their way into the story, but there isn't.Why?

Liara, Tali, and Garrus are the most prevalent of the Mass Effect companions to the point where the concept of writer bias is not all a work of fantasy and fiction. . .though we at least have the option to kill or otherwise not recruit the latter two. (though I can't say I understand why you would do such).

Ok. She can do that. but her background doesn't support her being a squadmate. Just have her on the ship and when she mentions Ilos, leave her on the Citadel. Have Shiala be the squadmate instead.

As one that kind of hates the way Shiala talks, I'm glad that she wasn't. I'd rather just dump her on the Feros colony and be done with it. In any case, the fact that she can be killed very early on means that she'd suffer the same fate the ME2 lot did, only sooner.

The thing is Liara isn't that important - in ME3 she ends up being a dud, and Traynor does most of the shadow brokering. What makes her a favourite is how she's basically shoehorned into friendship/borderline romance with Shepard.

Well bugger me. I absolutely meant to to type "fiction" rather than "non-fiction." I've had half a cask of wine tonight, if you will allow that as an excuse.

In response to the OP: I'm actually fairly optimistic that this isn't going to happen again, mostly because the main contributor to the inflated importance of Liara (and to a lesser extent Tali and Garrus) was ME2's decision to (1) introduce a metric f--k ton of new squadmates, and (2) make them all killable. It's hard to justify including a substantial amount of content for characters who might not even be alive.
I get the feeling Bioware will not repeat this mistake, not necessarily because of fan backlash but because from a design point of view, it was probably a nightmare to work around the suicide mission for ME3. I seriously doubt Bioware will want to induce those kinds of heachaches for itself in the future.
