I am sorry if this is already a thread, I am sure it is, but I had to contribute. I am disappointed in the lack of romances in this DA game. The only options if you are a straight dude are Cassandra, Josephine, and Sera. I like Cassandra but Josephine is also the only option if you want to play a gay female character, so that sort of takes away from it. And Sera is fugly as hell. I mean, the only female elf we get in the game and it looks like she was hit with an ugly stick at birth. Weak. If you play as a gay guy all you have is Dorian. One option, one. If you are a straight female all you have is Iron Bull or Cullen. That is it. I feel like Bioware has done so well with romances in the past and they just got lazy for DAI.

Also, I have only played through once (working on the second), and then I romanced Cassandra, so I don't know about the Josephine yet, but in my opinion the romance "line" was very anticlimactic. I carefully gained Cassandra's approval and it was cute when she started getting all awkward and feely, but after the "big" romance scene, that's it. You can get to that point well before the end of the game and so after the scene, that's it, nothing else to work toward. It would have been nice to have at least more dialogue options afterwards and maybe some good closure scene between my character and Cassandra at the end. It just felt so...unsatisfying. I have a feeling when I try to romance Josephine, it will bear the same result.

Anyone agree?

Er... Sera is gay. If you try to romance her as a man she'll end up telling you no. Josephine and Bull are both bi so you can romance them as male or female. If you are a straight female you can romance Blackwall, and if you play as a female elf you can romance Solas. You may feel like BioWare are lazy, but it seems that you are too lazy to even get your facts straight.

And your subjective opinion on Sera's looks is just that. Subjective opinion.

8 romances..  I think you missed a few names up there along with getting some mixed up with who can romance them.

Ladies get (depending on their race):

Blackwall, Cullen, Josephine, Sera, Solas, The Iron Bull

Gentlemen get:

Cassandra, Dorian, Josephine, The Iron Bull

Let's help you get the romances straightened out.

Straight Dude Romances: Cassandra, Josephine

Gay Dude Romances: Iron Bull, Dorian

Bi Dudes: Cass, Josie, Bull, Dorian

Straight Lady: Iron Bull, Cullen, Blackwall, and Solas (elf only)

Lesbian Lady: Josephine, Sera

Bi Ladies: Bull, Cullen, Blackwall, Solas(if an elf), Josie, and Sera

So really the options for straight dudes are more limited than you thought. I personally don't find options lacking. There are a couple choices for me to choose from no matter how I want to roll my character. Or I can choose not to romance anyone.

If I had a quid for every time I saw one of these threads I'd have enough money to pay for my copy of DAI by now, I'm sure.

In addition to this, Cullen is also race-gated, and only into humans and elves. So if you're playing a dwarf or qunari lady you get Blackwall, Bull, Sera and Josephine.

First of all, don't go so harsh on TDB1726, guys. We have all been new to the forums once. The number of topics can be overwhelming and it takes sometime to find the appropriate thread to discuss. I am sure there is an existing thread about this already, if anyone knows please direct.  ;)

Second of all, the first time I played, I wasn't sure about romances either. It took me almost 30 hours to get the feel for the characters (this was also the first DA game I played, so I was trying to understand the universe as well, without spoiling myself on the story as much as possible). However, now that I have had several playthroughs, I am very happy and excited by romance options.

My suggestion would be - try to brunch out. Try playing a character that you wouldn't normally play and then feel what NPC fits better as a romance. I think you would be pleasantly surprised.

I also think it takes a lot of time/effort/money to create those romances and at the end of the day, it is impossible to please everyone because people are very diverse and like different things. It would end up being a dating sim if it tried to account for every possible preference, and I am not sure that's even possible then.

Plus, if someone's going to open a thread to criticise a game, it helps to actually have their facts straight...

Well, I just saw 7 posts on forums and assumed the person wasn't here much.

True, I did think the criticism was a bit harsh considering what he had criticised wasn't researched. But peeps above have already clarified all that.

Or just the same dozen people over and over.  Which is actually probably closer to the truth........

To be fair, though, we haven't seen one of these in a while.  And at least this one didn't call Cass and Josie "men" (even if his facts were very wrong).

Nope. My characters in games, no matter their orientation, only flirt with people they are actually interested in. The only exception I made is for my fem Inquisitor who flirted with Dorian, but most of that was because I wanted to see how it played out. Even though I enjoyed it, and like him as a friend for my fem Inquisitor, I probably will go back to my usual thing and not flirt with him if I ever again play another fem. But... that would require that I tear myself away from my guy who has him as a romance, and that's not happening anytime soon.

I'm going to start taking screenshots across Thedas with character dialogue bubbles saying "Let's talk about the romance options." It would be a fun way to capture the frequency (and repetition) of these many, many threads.

Anybody else want to play along?

I haven't played the Cassandra romance, but I imagine that there are issues if

Spoiler

To your remark about not having anything to work toward... I can sympathize. With the Dorian romance, it's quite possible to do the whole arc shortly after arriving at Skyhold, leaving you with a great portion of the game only having random conversations with your LI and the occasional kiss-on-demand.

But I will say that, for some of them, their post-mission romance dialogs can be interesting and/or revealing. While I wouldn't mind some more of the romance to be interwoven into the game, with more references and such, I do understand that it's optional side content so they can't make it too significant. The current level is just about right for me.

Some of the romances suffer from serious pacing issues.

Dorian's romance was amazing, but it was over too fast. It would have been better if the romance didn't commit until after WEWH, for example. Solas's romance was even worse. Like Dorian's everything fun happened within moments of arriving at Skyhold... except for the disappointment after What Pride Has Wrought. I mean, if he was going to go and do that, at least he could have gotten it over with earlier so she could pull herself together and find someone else.

The pacing of Cullen's romance was probably the best. Something major happened after every quest.

Well to be fair that's really on the player. You can pace yourself if you want. I have a particular schedule worked out and just leave Mother Giselle standing in the hall waiting with Halward's letter so I don't start anything at all until after a certain point. But, it also goes along with the character, history, and personality.

Dorian likes the Inquisitor a lot, and the relationship is something he craves. He is also used to just having sex and moving on. It's a huge combo/mess thing. Even though he is reluctant to put himself in a position to be hurt (and you do see disappointment if you pick the "let's keep this fun" option, which IMO seems worse than the rejection option), he still wants, and so he jumps into it with both feet. In light of that I think that the pacing is actually appropriate for this character.

Pacing is one my nitpicks, on some of the romances. I had two play throughs that bugged out Dorian's personal quest, so when it came to romancing him, I felt the need to do things in a certain order, to ensure that it didn't bug out. So like @Berelinde, my romance with Dorian was 'snap-your-fingers' quick. I enjoyed the content, but pacing (to avoid bugs at the time), meant that it was a tad lacking in the latter part of the game.

Like Dorian, I had some pacing issues with Cass as well. Since I wasn't doing a PT where her "intended" was of like mind (i.e. he allied with the Mages, and didn't claim to be sent/touched or otherwise, from Andraste  - not to mention, he was going to be letting the GW's stay  ) I had to game the system. I love it when she is at the Wicked Grace game, and I obviously wanted her dance at Halamshiral, so I did rush her romance quite a bit. My choice - and I take full responsibility for the meta-gaming - but still would have been nice to have a bit more flexibility to pace it out more.

Solas' romance is also limiting. However, as a Solasmancer addict, I do love the content. But again, the good stuff happens rather early in-game.

I did find that both Iron Bull and Cullen's romances were very well paced. I suspect Josephine's might be similar (due to how I imagine the LI content was designed for Cullen....just a theory though. Others who have done the romance could "yay or nay" this assumption. ;) ). Of the eight romances, I have yet to try Josie's, Blackwall or Sera.

(and Harding always gets a little "attention" )
