Anyone else read this book? I know it's not by David Gaider, but is it still considered canon? So what happened with those griffon eggs? The first thing I thought was "um, how is an entire race supposed to recover from a handful of eggs, inbreeding much?" but I did like the idea of the griffons showing up again at some point. What do you guys think? Do the little griphons grow up in solitude somewhere and at some point their offspring are rediscovered in Thedas? Seems like a franchise so heavily based on the Grey Wardens can't get away with never having the creatures that are so important in their history show up at some point.

About how Gryphons can recover, I don't know if magic can fix the genetic problems that appear when you breed a group of creatures among their same bloodline over and over again.

It gets mentioned in a Tie-In lore book that came out a few months ago. There's like a codex entry with a Grey Warden talking about the baby Griffons. And about recovering the Griffon population with 13 eggs, the author posted on this website that it was feasible, citing what I think was a breed of dog that at one point, I think, only had 5 members with one boy and 4 girls but through careful breeding had recovered to a hundred in a few years.

Entire species have actually come into being from gene pools that tiny. Sometimes all it takes is one pregnant individual washing up on a beach somewhere and you get a whole new kind of critter. Google 'periapatric speciation'.
If the hatchlings aren't carrying any nasty recessive genes, they'll probably be OK.

Also, there's magic.
In any case, the baby griffons are mentioned in World of Thedas Volume 2, so I do think it's canon.

I think the novels in general are meant to be considered canon. I know for certain that the DAO prequel novels most certainly are. It's one reason that the authors of the novels, even the post-player-affected-world novels, make such an effort to be vague about certain things and characters. For example, in Asunder the DAO Warden is only alluded to by Wynne, and their gender, class, or origin is never referenced. Also in Asunder, Anders and his chantry explosion are directly referenced from DA2, but that's about it.
Yes, I know that the inclusion of Wynne and Shale is contrary to some players' world states, but when it comes to major events in the novel(s) I think it's a safe bet to assume that most of it is canon. And of course we saw from DAI that that was indeed the case for Asunder and The Masked Empire.

The bigger problem was that the griffons are meant to be at Warden HQ and something bad seemed to be going on there considering how all contact eventually stops. May be a future sub-quest will involve rescuing the baby griffons.

Honestly, I just hope the whole "Warden Civil War" nonsense just gets swept aside as another rumour, as is so common in the ending slides. What would the Wardens be having a civil war over anyways?
Regardless, I do hope we get to see griffins in some capacity next game. Maybe Merrill receives one from the Wardens in return for some of her arcane/blood magic lore? ![]()

Hopefully all 13 survive. I got to wonder how the current High Constable will react. Being the first aerial commander after four ages.

Well, we don't really know what is going on in the Andefels or with the Wardens specifically. There has been hints of a few things going on behind the scenes in the few past games. Warden civil war or no I think ALL Wardens know how significant the Griffon resurgence is so I wouldn't worry about them being harmed by any side, the Wardens that is.

Actually, the Hero of Ferelden returns from the West riding a griffon, since they never died out there...
...is how the story should go.

In Last Flight, the First Warden does start the investigation by asking them to look for 'Wardens acting oddly, like they're under the influence of blood magic'. That plotline screams important, but is never picked up again. I smell future plots. ![]()
Then there's the possibility of the alliance with the Architect, some crazy new plans, fighting over who gets to pet the griffins, the First Warden trying to make the Warden-Commanders more subservient after the disaster with Clarel...

I've got this theory griffons were something they always wanted to have in game but were obviously unfeasible in Origns, so they got put on the lore shelf. Now that they've moved to better tech they're putting in plot hooks so that they can bring them back if they make a game which has room for them.

Sounds like one hell of a party.

"um, how is an entire race supposed to recover from a handful of eggs, inbreeding much?"
30 rabbits and 50 beavers were enough to completely overwhelm Australia and Argentina

You'd subject Griffons to blood magic? Again?
*Snorts* I guess it would make a case for how mages throughout the ages are universally bound to repeat the same mistakes again but...well the last time that happened that it resulted in their extinction.
Gives one incentive to gut that dumb little elf though i suppose.

I suspect that was all in reference to the plotline in DAO involving the False Joining and Corypheus.
Clarel is even name-dropped during the book.
