On condition that they rebuy a game they already own in order to play any future paid content.... Nike-and-dime.

On condition that they rebuy the game at a third of the price to keep receiving FREE multiplayer updates.

I mean it does suck, but on the other end of the spectrum - you could say that they are now officially starting to support PS4 and XB1.

The discontinuation of DLC and patches on Xbox360 and PS3 was announced publicly alongside the release of the save importer system.

Billy chose to talk about what this means for multiplayer in more depth on these boards because this is where our more vocal and active members of the community are. This is also where the multiplayer team has been coming for the past several months to talk directly to our players.

Accusing the team of not being transparent because they are actively posting here is ridiculous. Had something gone out over twitter, we'd see people complaining that we are using social media that "not everyone checks" instead of posting on our own boards (as we regularly have in the past). Had we posted on reddit or neogaf instead of these boards, it would be the same.

For a variety of reasons, there are things they simply are not able to go into detail on, which I know can be frustrating at times. Please understand that the team is doing their best to address your concerns and answer questions.

http://www.dragonage...s/save-importer that link only shows how to import over to the new gen and explains about dlc support being offered only for new gen systems. It doesn't say anything about discontinuing patch support for PS3/Xbox360.

Honestly, dropping that part of your teams support is the biggest issue for me, and most of the community. No more patch support. This game doesn't work very well, and there's tons of things the players have been asking you to fix for a while, and you're just not going to anymore. I could care less about new content (that'd be icing on the cake for me) I just want a game that works properly. I stuck with it for 8 months and never got it on my PS3.

Technically, this forum is a very small % of the PS3/Xbox360 community. Not that many people check the forums or your website regularly. Why not post it on other social medias? Copy paste my friend.

There are TONS of players on the old gen that have yet to hear the news. And when we try to get the world out to a wider ranged community, as in through private messages within PSN etc, you accuse us of lashing out and stirring up trouble. What are you trying to hide by not reaching out with this news on Twitter, Facebook, or Reddit or anywhere else besides this forum? I see your team posting there every day, but nothing has been said about discontinuing support for old gen systems.

It's pretty clear that you haven't reached out beyond this forum. That's one reason why I feel you've been less than transparent. We also bought the game with the assumption we'd be getting support for it longer than 8 months. That by definition is not being transparent.

Yes, I know I could continue playing a supported version of the game, if I dropped $400 for a PS4, and another $35-40 to buy your game a 2nd time. But honestly, that's just ridiculous. Offer me a free download, I already paid you guys $60.

When you get accused of being less than transparent when it's obvious that you haven't been communicating to a wider community, or that because you made the decision half a year after releasing the game for old gen that you'd no longer be supporting it with patches and dlc, don't get mad at us and get defensive. We know you're trying hard here to communicate, and I thank you for that at least. The fact of the matter remains, you duped us into thinking we'd get a full game with our initial purchase back in Nov last year, then dumped us 8 months later with no explanation or reason other than "your game system is too old".

Please don't mention "FREE" DLC because you already paid for it... In fact when you first bought the game you bankrolled this extra content. It's not "FREE" it's drip fed content you already paid for. (Unless you bought the game second hand and then it is free... But that'd make you a dirty leech and I'll go into that another time).

Much like everyone who paid for this game, bankrolled every piece of DLC paid or "FREE" has been released or soon to be released.

You know what's free? That FREE Multiplayer they gave out to people who never paid a cent towards any of the development costs of the main game and the future content.

It does, but it's not very verbose.

All future Dragon Age: Inquisition DLC will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One only, so we designed our Save Importer feature to help make the transition to a new console as easy as possible.

Actually...

That little article WAS posted on the official Dragon Age Twitter account (and probably the Facebook one, too) back when it first went up, which was almost two weeks ago.

The problem I have with it is that it can be a little difficult to see the drop of support part. It's done in a way where it's like "here's the good news!" with the "bad news" buried in the second paragraph that you have to infer. Because instead of just coming out and saying "we're no longer supporting PS3 and XBox 360", it's put in a positive spin of "all future DLC will be on PC, PS4, and XBox One only".

"All future Dragon Age: Inquisition DLC will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One only, so we designed our Save Importer feature to help make the transition to a new console as easy as possible. Below, we’ll walk you through the migration process for each console, as well as provide a helpful FAQ."

So, it's there. But not in big, bold, giant letters, so I absolutely understand why a lot of people may not have come away from that article fully realizing what it actually meant. It's conveyed in a way that says, "Good news! If/when you upgrade your system, you can transfer your saves with this cool thing we made for you!" rather than "Unfortunately, we will no longer support future DLC or patches for PS3 and XBox 360. But if you choose to upgrade your system, we've made it easy for you to transfer your SP game saves and MP progress with this handy-dandy save importer!"

People complain because "DLC" possibly doesn't include patches, depending on how it's defined.

When I read this, I did worry that meant end of support for PS3 all together. My hope was that the sentence excluded the free MP DLC but that was just wishful thinking on my part. And likely the omission is what caused the existing base to not sink into immediate panic. If they had been more descriptive at the time this dropped we would have had this fall out then instead of now and I wonder if it would have went differently at all.

That's not how it works.

It is how it works.

Don't call something free when you've contributed to the production cost and any profit there after.

As soon as you pre-order any game, your commitment  translates into sales projections and forcasts and  production of future content and features... Oh and whether they need to fix anything because nowadays they throw it into the wild not working then depending on your spend level will decide if they need to keep working on it.

I'm on PS4 and played the game on PS4. But yes, feel sorry for them and support them because in all honesty I have no idea why there hasn't been a gesture of goodwill to their fans.

But seriously, everyone's gotta stop making up excuses for these companies because you won't be doing the same when they screw you over.

Like I said in a previous post, the gesture of goodwill probably costs more than the lost income from the future sales they lose from lost customers. Let's face it; I bet they lose less than 100 total people from this announcement. A drop in the the bucket for a company as big as EA. How much would a goodwill gesture cost? A lot more than 100 less customers.

Volvo hit me sideways with a roundabout guarantee. I know what it is like to think I would have something and not have it, but in the end consumers dictate where the market goes, and companies change their behavior based on consumer choice. Companies that "screw you over" do lose business, and in the end will lose market share. That is just the way it works.

Right. Again. Their website offers NOTHING about patch support being dropped. That's why several of us are outraged with this news Billy released 2 days ago. We are stuck with the game as it currently is, xp glitch, fc bugs and connectivity issues abound, classes not balanced etc. The community on old gen systems will be dead in the water in a month or less.

To add to that, my wife is super into the SP and the prospect of her not being able to play a Solas-themed DLC for SP in the future is what allowed my request to purchase a PS4 to be authorized so to speak. Didn't take much convincing :D

Yeah, we were all sort of replying to each other all at the same time. I missed your post right before mine that pointed out the article only specifics DLC support when, in reality, it's all support being dumped. You're 100% correct about that.

Which, honestly, should have been a separate article. A press release regarding the ending of PS3/XBox 360 support - stand-alone and upfront - with a secondary focus on discussing the save importer for those choosing to upgrade their systems. That really would've been the best route, in my opinion.

This line of logic is consistent with the reason they give for not releasing information about the DLCs before they are released, something to do with legal and accounting on software that is released for free after the initial release. I can't find the twitter post from a while back.

You know what's free? That FREE Multiplayer they gave out to people who never paid a cent towards any of the development costs of the main game and the future content.

Let's clarify a few points here, because we've already discussed this, but it keeps being brought up with the same incorrect statements.

1) DLC is developed after the main game is finished.

The free MP DLC was started as soon as the game completed certification, literally the next day, still weeks before the game is released to the public.  This means that yes, the development of DLC was started after the game was finished, but before it was available for sale.  The argument that you have already bankrolled this free content is inaccurate, incorrect, and has already been stated as such several times on the boards.  When you purchase the game for <insert price at time of purchase>, you have purchased the game.

2) The Trial has nothing to do with DLC.

There is no connection between the Trial and DLC. At all. Separate teams were responsible for the development of each product.

3) Why no discounted upgrade pricing?

While it was never directly tied to, or marketed as such, there have been a number of discounted price opportunities since the announcement that DLC support would discontinued for PS3 and Xbox 360.  Throughout the month of July, Dragon Age: Inquisition has been on sale, at up to 50% off regular price, for physical or digital copies 4 separate times, with a wide range of retail partners.  In many cases, these sales were being retweeted or shared by team members on social media.

3a) Why not make it specific to the upgrade?

Because we wanted everyone to have a chance at the discounted prices.  If you're playing Multiplayer and thinking about upgrading, you may also be talking to friends who are thinking about upgrading as well, or buying DAI for the first time.  If you can both benefit, that's awesome.

4) Stating "Person X is not evil, Company Y is actually evil." is no better than the original statement that someone is evil.

BioWare and EA work together. We're partners.  No one hands down an "evil doctrine" that the other must abide by.  Decisions are made together.  Someone stating that EA is evil is just as upsetting to me as someone saying Billy Buskell is evil. I chose to work for EA and BioWare.  I greatly enjoy working for both companies.  If I felt either was evil, I would not choose to work for them.  I applied to work at EA Canada in 2005.  I did not believe EA to be evil then.  I applied to work at BioWare to work in 2006, not because EA was evil, but because I truly believed in what I saw BioWare working on (Mass Effect 1) was going to be amazing.  EA bought BioWare in 2007.  I stayed with the companies because I really loved what both companies were striving for in the future.  It's 2015. I am still at BioWare.  Because I know what we have coming is even better than what we've accomplished to date.

Folks, as Conal and I have mentioned previously, we enjoy having good, healthy, constructive discussions with all of you.  When the communication stays within those boundaries, everyone can have a good time.  When the team is accused of not responding to something that has either already been addressed, or has been addressed to the level that we are able to explain, or when the team is accused of intentionally trying to harm or break trust with a group, this is not generally going to encourage team members to continue, or join new, conversations.

We understand some of you may not be thrilled with this news.  This thread has very clearly demonstrated that.  Some news we have to deliver is not fun to deliver. This is one of those instances.  We don't take these decisions lightly.  However, we must do what's in the best interest of the product and the service as a whole.

There are ways to express displeasure or frustration without resorting to attacks. I am happy to continue this discussion with those that wish to ask polite questions, or provide constructive criticism.

Billy

Well, now.

Billys original post states that patch support will be dropped too.

The team had to make the tough decision to end new content and patch support for older systems. This affects single-player and multiplayer DLC content, as well as patches.
