Square Enix payed Sony for this promotion in the expectation that the monthly game fee would ultimately create a return on their investment. Save your $30 on PS4 version of DA:I (with all the upcoming FREE content) and use it to purchase a 60-day game card for FFXIV. Then keep telling yourself that Square Enix has your best interest at heart and Bioware hates you.
SQUARE paid Sony for free use of PSN so their subscribers don't need to have PS+ to play their subscription service.
Paid for DLC is not free for DA:IMP and as you can see with last gen users here, they've paid and played all of Bioware's previous entries. Majority of these people upgrading to play future DLC wouldn't be doing it JUST so they could play MP... Which should be rather obvious by now with the small community.
I hope this weekend's challenge will be worth 60 prestige points! LOL
It only costs $180/year to play FFXIV. Sweet deal you should praise them more for how generous they are.

They said it was the most successful Bioware launch and it sold more that initially projected but nothing about it breaking even.
They then follow it up by a smoke screen of "How many hours spent playing" with no numbers on how many units have actually sold.
Which actually is not saying much at all, because if any of their previous launches were that successful then they wouldn't have been bought by EA.

I never said they were generous, I said it was consumer friendly for them to offer upgrades.
Also a subscription based MMO that offers regular updates and dedicated servers is no different from a paying $160 worth of game with season pass and dlc packs with no dedicated servers.

3) If you're going to start a mass PSN/XBL message to everyone on your friend's list asking everyone to express their outrage regarding this topic double check you don't have any BioWare developers on your bulk message... seriously.

I suppose matchmaking issues go both ways.
Scene - If they don't break even with their initial projections, then obviously thats pretty bad business and so the project would likely have been shut down with the whole DA2 debacle.
Publishers very rarely purchases teams on the way down, thats also bad business. Bioware was, and still is, a popular brand which EA has capitalized on across a number of development teams, and games.
Why no free next gen game/refund ?
Probably because it would work like this...
A few hundred thousand people bought the game on PS3/Xbox360....and many just for the single player....enjoyed it and stuck it in a cupboard to never be heard from again and are currently perfectly happy customers.
A few hundred people played or continued to play the multi player content and therefore would be due refund/free copy of game on next gen, as has been suggested in other posts.
Sadly....the hundred thousand(s) people would take advantage and jump on the band wagon (even the happy customers?) and demand their full refund/free upgrade to next gen. Even 100,000 people at £40 a pop would cost £4,000,000. Not going to happen.
And that is why I cannot support said people...
You have got your monies worth already and it's not like they are shutting down the servers. You got/are still getting what you paid for and more and can still play.
I've personally sank over 1000+ hours into this game. That's more than value for money right there even if it closed tomorrow on PS4.
One of the few posts of reason i've seen in this topic. Thanks.

Many games don't break even in the first quarter, Tomb Raider 2013 didn't break even till a year after launch... A successful and critically acclaimed IP and they were already working on the second installment.
So really don't know what you're talking about...
You might be hitting sales projections in the first quarter, doesn't mean you'll be hitting them 2nd, 3rd or 4.
Can we for a solid three seconds stop with the hostility? As Billy said, just because you don't like the answer you were given, doesn't mean that it's a cop out of an answer or a not legible answer. These people work their assess off to make games and interact with fans, only to be yelled at for something they weren't even responsible for, and you people just slander it all as if you are getting paid for it.
If you're this angry with BioWare that you choose to send threats to the devs over an economical decision, make it easier on everyone and deactivate your account. It's not cool, it doesn't make anyone feel better. It's on the verge of being sociopathic.
You'd fit right in at EA/bioware.
'Well, I don't agree with the decision, but I understand why it was made because $$$$$$$, and thats all that matters at the end of the day.'
Yes, cash IS what matters at the end of the day. As mentioned, game companies don't run on fairydust and the employees of the said game company don't feed their families with fairydust. Welcome to the world of decadent capitalism.
Yes, they are. There is also a reason why valve is one of the most loved companies in the world and why EA is one of the most hated.
What you're doing here is comparing tomatoes and oranges. EA is a MASSIVE corporation, they fund the companies they own and publish the games of the said companies. Valve, unbelievably so, is much smaller. First of all, Valve makes and publish their own games, which are also not as epic in scale as some of the games published under the wing of Electronic Arts. (Try comparing Left 4 Dead with Battlefield).
The reasons why EA is hated and Valve is loved are also completely different. At the end of the day, the biggest reason people love Valve is Steam, not to mention that Valve simply doesn't have to deal with the same decisions EA has to deal with on a daily basis. They are two completely different corporations with one thing in common, and that is games.
If you're going to compare, compare Ubisoft to EA instead.
True, but by working at Bioware (therefore morally agreeing with corporate decisions) he has to take responsibility for it.
I don't see why Billy, the Multiplayer producer, needs to deal with all this mess instead of the EA executive who signed the papers to make this decision.
Meh... It's suitable.
You'd probably complain too if you had to buy a new version of the game everytime you upgraded your graphics card.
That's just it. My old machine was about 5 years old. If I purchased DAI and tried to run it on that, and found it was no good, I wouldn't have had to buy the game again when I upgraded my hardware to what it is now. All had to do is install Origin on the machine, log in, and everything I've ever purchased through Origin is now available on my newly upgraded machine.
Should I decide to upgrade to a machine capable of running the game at 4k res I'm not buying the game again, just the hardware required as I already own the game.
That's why I sympathize with guys left high and dry on the old systems. They've got to do both, upgrade hardware, and buy the game again. Seems wrong to me when they were given no advanced warning before release that this might even be a possibility.
^ Again... this is a CONSOLE issue. Console's are proprietary. You cannot build your own console and load PlaystationStore on it. You can, however, build your own system and load Origin on it. Go read your ToS for PlaystationStore and you will realize that Sony has the grip on your grapes, not Bioware.
Eelectrica - a more fair PC comparison would be this; Games that required Windows 95 to run.
Can we run these games on modern systems? Yes, in some cases either through a recombined .exe file (Sold by GOG.com for instance), or by using emulators.
It's the same with the older console generation. They run on ancient hardware, and using old operating systems.
In some cases you can get the older games to run on the newer models that are much more PC-like from an architectural perspective. (Microsofts virtualization tech that is currently being tested, and the steaming service that Sony bought awhile ago), but more often than not you'd need to buy the game again on a modern platform.
We're just "lucky" on PC that this schism happened many years ago when Windows moved to the NT Kernel, and Direct X matured, where as the older console generation will have to face it now.
It's unfortunate, but it couldn't be avoided within commercially reasonable efforts likely.

This entire situation is inherently not funny for anyone on either side of the current debate... but I had to laugh at # 3. Wow. Just wow. ![]()
Before anyone does the "You don't know our plight" I own copies of the game on both X360 and Xbox One so I own both sides of this 'issue'.
When I paid my initial costs (I bought one version of the Inquisitor's Edition, a standard Xbone copy for a friend, and an X360 copy to play with another friend), I didn't expect DLC was included in that price in any means. As for the 'surprise' ending I figured it would just get resolved in DA 4 similar to the whole issue of the breaking of the Circles and the Templars departure from their duty as guardians of the people appears in some form or fashion in DA:I (None of the DA 2 DLC even touches on these issues).
I'm the Devil's Advocate here because I don't see why you should get a second copy of a $60 game because you may some day flip to a new console. You bought the initial game and that post people are passing around came before the game even launched if you're paying attention to dates. If you read anything beyond that you'll notice they didn't start creating DLCs until after the launch of the game was successful, we've also had many of the people involved in DA:I's story move to other projects in that time and we don't know just how many people have been flipped around. So by that thought alone we don't know just who on their team was saying "We'll continue support" at the time that article was written.
A large number involved in this outcry are only yelling about SP and some are only yelling about MP and a third party is yelling about both. This means if they fix any of it at least one party in this whole screeching match is left out, they've already guaranteed you don't have to re-buy the two previous DLCs that came out before this change was made and you don't have to replay your progress (SP or MP) which is better than what a large majority of companies have done if you upgraded to a new console for their same game. Before you say anything on that note, I re-bought DMC and Metro for the upgraded textures and it was the lack of a save import that made me rather annoyed.
The only thing you're really entitled to is the initial game and possibly patches to fix that initial game, buying the game has never guaranteed you the right to DLCs. I can understand the outcry over it not getting patched anymore and that is a valid argument, the argument of not receiving DLC isn't as there's nowhere on the box or in the initial purchase that guarantees it to you.
Short bit here: As of this point between SP and MP, I've put in 458 hours by the Xbox One server count which means if you put a price on the total time I've placed in the game it still exceeds my initial investment ($335.55 including TX state sales tax) by $3328.45 (this figure is based on $8/hour as my base). This means at least for me that I've gotten almost eleven times my investment returned to me in time played over the past couple of months, even if you're only playing one or the other I have roughly 150 hours in SP and 300 in MP which means I'm satisfied with my investment on either side of the fence. This count only includes the time on Xbox One mind you so I probably have far more than I want to admit in this game.

The difference here is you bought both versions of the game before they announced no future patches/DLC for previous gen 8 months later.
I'm pretty sure followers of the series have come accustomed to multiple DLC releases on previous games and some had bought the game under the assumption that they would be able to purchase these extended story quests at a later date.
The entitlement to an upgrade is arguable.... However, releasing 1 paid version of DLC then cutting off support completely is deceptive practice, no matter which way you look at it. They should have said that much earlier in the process like "Oh hey, here's Age of Hakkon and it'll be the last DLC for legacy platform. Kthnxbye".
I'm just surprised there is no gesture of goodwill for transferring players, not even a small discount... When they've given away MP for free to users who never purchased the game to begin with. It's almost as bad as them saying they give free DLC packs for MP when it's the sales of the game that is bankrolling all this "FREE" content.
I'm on PS4 so I'm not really hit hard by this... However it does leave a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to consumer relations.
I personally didn't buy Age of Hakkon because I voted with my wallet because I am really against DLC timed exclusivity.... So I hope future DLC is not treated like a cheap hooker so I can actually enjoy some of their work.
.....wat.
Valve and EA have similar worth, clocking in at around 3 billion USD. Ubisoft is worth a third of that. Perhaps check facts before saying things which are completely false. Its totally reasonable to compare them. Both make and publish games under their own DRM. Valve is loved because they make and support great games, they have steam workshop, they support indie developers, they have steam sales, they listen to fans when they make stupid decisions (see paid mod fiasco) they make PC gaming what it is.
Small games? Youve obviously never heard of Dota 2, Counterstrike or team fortress. Huge games which are more played than any battlefield title in existence.
Its very obvious you have a huge bias towards EA/bioware, id go as far as to say its blind fanboyism, but saying valve is a small company is one of the most ridiculous things ive read in a long time. They are one of the largest companies in the industry.
One thing we can agree on though is that this announcement should not have been made by Billy. At the very least it should have been Aaron Flynn or one of the EA executives.
I never said Valve was small, I said smaller regarding the very few aspects they have in common. EA has far more employees and bigger revenue than Valve by a longshot. (them being almost two different companies notwithstanding). I checked my facts, thank you very much.
Also, I don't have a bias towards anything. I'm mostly indifferent and I'm just stating the facts. If we're going to include opinions here, I disagree with a lot of things EA has done over the years, though I do applaud them for being the masters of making money. The main problem with EA is that they are not gamers, they have no idea how the gaming community works, and Valve does.
The same goes for BioWare. I dislike a whole book of things that were implemented in Inquisition (especially the PC version). But I'm not going to sit down on my ass, bash my head on my keyboard until it looks like a swearword filled rant that somewhat makes sense, and send it to BioWare. I'm an adult who is capable of giving constructive criticism for future reference, turning off my computer and realizing that this is only a videogame.
However, this Older Console Drama™ is an isolated incident. As mentioned in my initial post, it was one of those decisions that would have ended badly no matter what they would have decided to do. (and frankly, people should have anticipated this call.) There is absolutely no easy way out with calls like these, especially in the BioWare fandom where the fans resort to threats and boycotts over the smallest of things.

To put it in another perspective, I didn't just buy but pre-ordered all of those copies of this particular game before they even announced DLC at all. I was hoping for DLC but I wasn't putting my money in Bioware's hands because I wanted DLC, I did it because I wanted DA:I and the MP component no matter how goofy it was going to be.
As for your goodwill to the older users, its funny you bring this up because Bioware/Microsoft has been having Xbox One sales for the past month and a half or so on Dragon Age Inquisition and its DLCs. Its been popping up on their sale list in various forms (it was up for 50% off just two weeks ago), it may come up again in the future. Plus at this point you can buy a copy through Walmart.com for $34.58, which is actually cheaper than the 360 version.
http://www.walmart.c...2360672&veh=sem
They also guaranteed that you could A.)Transfer your SP data, B.)Transfer your MP data, C.) You don't have to re-buy Jaws of Hakkon or Spoils of Hakkon if you bought it already.

PSN have been having these sales for DA:I too... The point being Goodwill is a discount that is applied on it's current price structure and has a time frame, not a "come to Next Gen and wait for a discount".

At this point based on the prices of downloads still being $60 for downloading in most formats you're getting a discount in the following places:
http://www.gamestop....uisition/114765
$39.99 for Xbox One or PS4
http://www.walmart.c...2360672&veh=sem
$34.58 for Xbox One or $32.19 for PS4
Both of those are new prices for the physical game. Best Buy and several other places are still selling it for $59.99 for the physical copy unless its used. It may not be exactly the "Goodwill" you're seeking but its cheaper than when I bought it for the next gen system. I'm bringing these up because these are two places that a large number of players can get to and buy from.
Again you also don't have to re-buy the DLC if you bought it already, which I had to do several times when upgrading my games from one console to the next (either when I bought them in digital or physical forms and yes I bought JoH twice once for myself on Xbox One and once for a friend) and you're getting to keep your saves/mp data which means you don't have to re-level anything unless you want to.
Billy,
You win the biggest nugs award for helming this thread.
I can understand those who are old gen and angry. At the core of their discontent they feel deceived since buying a full priced game they expected the full price treatment.
However, the day was going to come for old gen consoles when companies started to realize that continuing support on them just wasn't a smart decision. I saw this pop up with one or two other games recently on Destructoid. Lots of games coming out in 2016 aren't even listed as being on PS3/X360.
Heads up old gen, going forward this kind of indicident is going to happen more and more often.
Instead of hurling insults and getting angry, why not channel your energy positively? Accept the situation for what it is and move on. Plan on how to save up for a current gen. Find some other games you can play.
Accepting things as they are and moving on is a powerfully freeing experience. I do not deny old gen users the right to be angry, but accept, process, and move on. It is a big beautiful massive world out there to explore.
My father is a very wise man.
He told me "Son, if you are gonna get screwed, you might as well lay back and enjoy it."
PS1 and PS2 went the same way.
Remember those? No? Exactly.
Yumi is right. Better start saving for that Playstation 5.
I remember shelf life of consoles being listed as 5 years, so the last gen have done really well considering.
