How do you feel about Happily-Never-After where the LI leaves you without your input? There were a big contrast between Jacob and Solas' fan reaction to being dumped. Jacob cheated on you and then leaves you after knocking up another woman while Solas leaves you after deceiving you. Solas, however, was very positively being received while Jacob was being dreaded. Was it due to the characters' popularity or how the story being presented, so it wouldn't matter if you get dumped if you are being dumped the "right" way?

What are you comparing here? No, really?

Solas - leaving his LI after big victory in order to continue his mission too dangerous for mortals. It's his burden and as heart broken as he is he has to do it alone. LI is "alive and well" - the head of very powerful organisation, celebrating

Jakob - cheating on LI while LI is IN PRISON, not only leaving her in danger but completely forgetting like they never meant anything for each other. This is too cold even for an enemy, not only for LI or at least friend.

If you need comparison - take Alistair  here with anyone but Cousland. It will be a little bit closer.

Jacob's romance was done the way it was done because of one incredibly simple reason: He was incredibly unpopular. I can guarentee that BioWare wouldn't have done the same thing with a romance that players actually cared about.

Jacob had potential if he had more edge added to him. And I know I say this a lot but look at MGS4. What they did with Raiden, turning an unpopular character into someone who really has depth to him while also making Gray Fox look bad? That was incredible. Most people hated his guts in MGS2, but when I heard that raspy, world weary ninja-tracker-metal gear asskicker speak on my codec while in South America, I got goosebumps. So rather than making us hate a character more, give us a reason to like them if they're supposed to be liked. Jacob could've changed outfits completely, gotten a bit of a smart ass sort of makeover in personality and rejoined the Normandy. Give us an investment in this character and he'd be a guaranteed hit. Or improvement.

I like Jacob's romance better cause Jacob wasnt. Shepard cheerleader like all the other LIs. He was a realistic dude who wanted to get in the pants of his female commander. No, he didnt have a soap opera romance like Thane so what? I like Jacobs romamce cause it was different in a realistic sense and not some fairy tale.

At the end of the day, isnt realism something people whined about in regards to the armor of Miranda?

Realism apply only if i don't like something.

The realism argument in video games eventually makes everyone a hypocrite because video games must be unrealistic to work.

Jacob was the least romanced character of ME2. I feel most people who complain about jacob didn't romance him. Also, People feel really strongly about cheating, although the whole kill him stuff is a bit much, my goodness people.

While Jacob is supposed to appeal to women based on attractiveness, Solas appeal was not his looks, people may find him attractive but he is by no means conventionally so. It's his attitude. Characters can be unassertive if they are funny, but usually need to be assertive to be liked. Or need to be very open in how much they support you.

So the trifecta is a funny assertive character who supports you- Varric, and later a bit Garrus

Solas is belittling, but early on that dude gives you approves all over the place just by being a completionist and asking questions, and while he is not funny, he is assertive.

Jacob is grim, is a bit on the fence, and actually resists taking a liking to you. Jacob is like the anti-varric/garrus

We excuse terrible behaviors from characters we like, while being twice as hard on characters we don't like.

My take on it?  Solas has the guts to actually tell you it's over before he runs off to do his own thing.  Jacob cheats on you and gets someone else knocked up, within the space of 6 months, without ever contacting you in any way.  And only then does he tell you it's over.  This, after telling a Shepard who romances him that he loves her.

It's also clear that whatever he's up to, Solas still loves a romanced Inquisitor.  It's possible he's better received because there's some hope for a reunion and maybe even getting back together with him.  If that reunion happens in some terrible way, i.e. we have to kill him, expect Solas's popularity as a romance to nosedive.  Either way, he never actually lied to you about his intention to stay.  Solas tells you from the start that it's a bad idea.  He tells you early on that he plans to leave once the breach is closed.  Falling in love isn't enough to stop him doing what he said he'd do all along.  And a lot of people are consequently worried about him, since he's likely endangering himself.  There's also the idea that his duty, or responsibility, or whatever it is, has greater importance to him than love (and it doesn't hurt that he looks like a kicked puppy when he breaks up with the Inquisitor or that he verbally beats himself up over it when questioned afterward--he's not enjoying it either).  Compare to Jacob, who seems to have been having a great time getting someone else knocked up.  Jacob's actions have nothing to do with duty or with a sense of responsibility (other than to his future child).

The difference is in how their stories were presented. Solas' departure very much made sense for his character, considering the end game reveal.

Jacob's arc in ME3 however was complete 180 based on how he was portrayed in the second game. Jacob's arc only ended the way it did because he was not a popular character and Bioware decided not to spend the resources developing a LI arc in ME3. Basically his LI arc in ME3 got cut due to unpopularity, whereas with Solas his leaving at the end was planned from the beginning.

Jacob's fans were angrier than Solas' fans because his arc had infidelity that was both out of character and shoehorned in, just so Bioware didn't have to expend resources developing it in the third game.

Not necessarily.

One thing I noticed about Jacob, and as a guy and one who never played a girl to romance him, is that the guy has some serious commitment issues.

Family? He gave up on his father, and even at the start of the mission isn't big on seeing him again, even before finding out what his father did.

Service? He left the alliance and left the corsairs because he couldn't handle the regulations that came with the job, and in its place decided to join a terrorist group, which he again later leaves.

While talking to Jacob, I've noticed he has left behind everything he has ever been a part of. He's a nice guy, but the man has never committed to anything long-term.

When I found out that Jacob cheats on Shepard and then breaks up with her, I honestly simply was not surprised because he never committed to anything else either, not for the long haul.

I will say that when I first played Dragon Age: Origins and romanced Morrigan, I didn't know she left at the end of the story and I didn't have any inkling that she would come back in future DLC; I certainly figured she'd have a part to play in the story in future games, but I had no idea whether or not that would involve getting back together with the Warden.

While people can get on to me by saying they could ultimately get back together, all I have to say is that I didn't have a problem with the relationship ending the way it did in the game at the time, so it wouldn't bother me if they included another romance that comes to an end.
