I think that, if my character was a smoke, I'd lose a little bit of a connection with them.

Don't worry, I'm pretty certain we won't be playing a cigarette.

I think that, unless you have some way of picking the character trait, I could definitely see a downside to it.  Someone mentioned smoking.  I detest smoking, so I'd rather not have my PC be a smoker, if I can help it.  I think that, if my character was a smoke, I'd lose a little bit of a connection with them.  I just don't think there's a way to do this without causing people to dislike those traits in their own characters.  I guess, I'm not seeing how it's a net positive.  It's only positive for those who happen to like whatever traits they add in.

Or, if they allow you to choose the trait, then it ends up being a resource pit because you'd have to account for multiple 'traits' where applicable.  Again, from a cost/benefit view, I'm not seeing how it's worth it.   It's good in theory.  But I think it'd lose something in practice.

Yeah I like just sticking with personalities. They already did a great job with paragron and renegade Shepard. My paragron Shepard may smile hesitantly, talk in an even voice, take a step forward, and hold out his hand. Meanwhile my renegade Shepard just punched you through the window. Works for me! And the same goes for Hawke, though the DA team for whatever reason is ALWAYS rushed with their games, and so the personality choices weren't always as smooth as they should be. (And then we have the opposite with the inquisitor, who drones on no matter what dialogue option you pick - and there are no gestures and hardly any facial expressions.)

I think we will be okay with ME:A. They were moving in the right direction with Shepard so we'll probably have more of that. At least two personality type (calm and quick to anger). Plus your background will likely give you a reputation, again, like with Shepard. (I liked people always referencing the fact that I once sacrificed my entire squad to get the job done - it added layers to that Shepard; he was a bad ass but deep down he was never sure if he made the right decision).

... It wouldnt take much work to do...

I like your ideas, but it would indubitably take ALOT of work. That is a massive amount of non-essential animation they'd have to add to the game. Bioware has a hard enough time making romance scenes that don't have a bunch of awfully awkward clipping/animation issues.

Surely alot of these animations already exist in the games, there were characters who drank and smoked, but our hero didnt, why not just have our hero do it instead of them. Replace the animations of non essential background characters to allow a more fleshed out main character. Renagade/paragon doesnt cut it, i dont start a game and ultimately decide to be the good or bad guy, i make my own choices, i thought that was the point in allowing player choice. I just want a better system that recognizes our play style... Good/bad is outdated and should be left in the past , thats if we want to have true player choice and characters that feel more realistic. Isnt that the whole point in having RPG elements incorporated into a game... Otherwise it just feels linear with low replayability. A recognized trait system would be the ideal choice replacement, sure your right it would take ALOT of work... but its something they or someone else should be working towards. It just seems logical and the next step toward immersion.

If my character broke out a carton of candy cigarettes, I'd feel like the game was designed specifically for me.

Smoking is bad. Smokers are pathetic. Ban smoking from everywhere.

Would be funny but ultimately too gimmicky imo. I'd rather they add some actual character flaws to our protagonist though, and way less "I don't know how you do it. You're amazing I love you player character!" from everyone.

Well it could be the oral fixation trait you select so the animations were always there and you could pick

Black lung Shep: Smoker
Kojak Shep: Lollipop
Candy Shep: Pixie Sticks
Raver Shep: Pacifier
Nervous Shep: Leaky Pen
Stoner Shep: Doobie

One of the character traits in ME:A should be able to be like this guy:

I'd want Wild Wasteland as a trait.
