I always wanted a side mission or portion that had your universal translators broken down. We got a taste of this in Bring Down the Sky, but I want to see a side quest where you and your team have to make your way out of a situation without conventially communicating with eachother.

Would be cool to hear the native Krogan / Asari languages...for humans they can use different languages (Russian, Mandarin, whatever). Of course you wouldn't be able to command your crew to do stuff, but yeah. I think it would be neat.

No.  I don't know if it's in the ME Wikia, but one can assume -- yes there's native languages for each race.  However, I wonder if they are speaking a "galactic common language," or if they only using translators that is built-in via omni-tool.

It's an interesting idea, although if it were just not being able to give commands to your squadmates I feel like it wouldn't have that huge of an impact.

They use translators.

Shepard does have a weird line in ME1 though. When talking to the Asari at Rift Station and asking her about her work, she goes with some techno-babble and Shep says: "Think you could translate that into galactic?"

What was that about?

I think that was a sarcastic way of saying " Could you make sense?! "

Well, yea, sure that much was clear but it still implies that there is a galactic language, right?

Maybe it was just a slip-up by the writers from a time when they didn't have the details nailed down yet.

I think it's the same as if you say "Could you say that in <language>?"

This.

Bringing any more attention than necessary to the translators is a terrible idea.

Mass Effect is inconsistent.

Seriously, you can find proof for a galactic language and an universal translator in the game.

There are non-translated words in every language, Mordin sings in English... but hanar and elcor require translators.

Yeah, can't remember it either.

It was right when you meet the Batarians. They say something in their language and attack.

You then get a codex entry about translators.

Here ya go :D

Yeah, that's one example where the translator doesn't translate certain words, probably because it was a command for the Varrens.

Otherwise we wouldn't have stuff like "keelah se'lai" or similiar terms.

Exactly. It is also likely that some aliens may deliberately anglicize words that are otherwise unpronounceable. For example, if the Quarian pronunciation of keelah se'lai was too difficult for a human to say (just an example), and Tali tried to change the pronunciation so that it could be pronounced, then the translator would translate the original but probably not the altered pronunciation.

I thought asari needed other species to reproduce.

Shepard is just not smart.
