Stats, defence and effective hitpoint (EHP).
EHP is calculated by taking your life, and divide it by your damage reduction to show how much your total health pool is worth.
When you promote you gain higher stats.
1 promote will give you either 0.5% 'Melee' (con), 0.5% 'Ranged' (cun) or 0.5% 'Magic'(will) defence:
One point in a stat will slowly become worth more and more until you cap at 80% defence.
Formula: TotalHealthPool / (1-defence)
1000/(1-0.8) = 5000
1000/(1-0.75)=4000
1000/(1-0.7) = 3333
1000/(1-0.6) = 2500
1000/(1-0.5) = 2000
1000/(1-0.4) = 1666
1000/(1-0.3) = 1428
1000/(1-0.2) = 1250
1000/(1-0.1) = 1111

Example with stats:
Base 1000 HP
Stat: 30
Defence: 10%
Efficient Hitpoints: 1111
Base 1000 HP
Stat: 50
Defence: 20%
Efficient Hitpoints: 1250
Base 1000 HP
Stat: 70
Defence: 30%
Efficient Hitpoints: 1428
Base 1000 HP
Stat: 90
Defence: 40%
Efficient Hitpoints: 1666
Base 1000 HP
Stat: 110
Defence: 50%
Efficient Hitpoints: 2000
Base 1000 HP
Stat: 130
Defence: 60%
Efficient Hitpoints: 2500
Base 1000 HP
Stat: 150
Defence: 70%
Efficient Hitpoints: 3333
Base 1000 HP
Stat: 160
Defence: 75%
Efficient Hitpoints: 4000
Base 1000 HP
Stat: 170
Defence: 80%
Efficient Hitpoints: 5000
A veteran with 170 con/cun/will + 200 hp belt
Base: 1000 hitpoint + (160 con*5 hitpoints) +200 hitpoint belt = 2000 Hitpoints
Stat: 170
Defence: 80% vs. all
Efficient Hitpoints: 10.000
To consider
- Veteran gains more base hitpoints from an increases in constitution (5 HP for each 1 constitution)
- HP belt, Armor rating, class, levels etc.
- Melee, ranged and Magic may have different defence values, hence a different EHP,
- Notice how much 160 to 170 con matters compared to 10 to 110 Con.
- Remember that the first 10 in a given attribute gives 0% to any defence
- The formula for damage dealt by enemy NPCs against party members
For fun - "How to calculate your own EHP" (Credit: Proto pointed out a need for this)
Total Health Pool = Base HP + (CON -10 ) * 5 + Gear(Health Belt / Armor Upgrade)
EHP = TotalHealthPool / (1-defence)
TL:DL Veteran with 80% defence can obviously take "5 times" as much damage, as a scrub with 0% defence. (Same base hitpoint and armor)
