I don't understand Bioware's business strategy for DLC in this game.

Hello,

Lets look at the picture as a whole, and hopefully provide some insight into how DLC works in the normal of the industry.

First off, it is natural for people to move off projects as products get finished. Second most of the time DLC is not all made by the same team. Third the industry has shifted such that there is massive backlash for day 1 dlc so that cut things down.

ME3 had 4 pieces of story DLC. From Ashes was a day 1 DLC, where a very large team (comparatively) was able to churn out a DLC fairly quickly. For DAI I believe the majority of people took vacation during this time instead (because of backlash of day 1). Next up with Leviathan, which was produced by a reduced 'main game' dlc crew. Next up, Omega it was produced out of Montreal instead of the Edmonton studio. Lastly was Citadel which once again came back to the 'main game' dlc crew.

Looking at the release dates for Edmonton
ME3 Initial Launch: March 6, 2012

From Ashes: March 6, 2012

Leviathan August 28, 2012 (5 and a half months after launch)

Citadel: March 5, 2013 (1 year after launch, 6 and a half months after Leviathan)

DAI for Edmonton

DAI initial launch: November 18, 2014

Jaws of Hakkon: March 23, 2015 (2 platforms)

Jaws of Hakkon: May 26, 2015 (3 platforms)

So Montreal this time around have been working on ME:A they have not been available for DAI DLC thus why it looks slower compared to that of ME3.

(I was not around for games prior to ME3 so cant comment on them)

As for lack of advertising, it is hard to definitively know release dates with DLC since if there is a problem that crops up it might be harder to solve than when you are shipping a product and have literally hundreds of knowledge experts that might have an idea what is going on.

Thanks for trying to clear things up. Though I have to admit it is a LONG wait since march. And I think people would be pleased if you confirm a DLC without release date.

Both Mike Laidlaw and Mark Darrah have confirmed they're working on one recently via Twitter. The only secret is what it's about and when it's getting here.

Perhaps they are working to get those Fortresses back in action like they did want them to from the start.

*wouldn't that be awesome, he thinks despite knowing better*

I doubt they'd overhaul the base game that drastically, but I wouldn't rule out them implementing such a feature in a new area. I could see that happening.

Hopefully we will start seeing news about this big SP dlc next week. Maybe some news articles and a trailer. I'm feeling confident it will happen August anyway. :)

From all the info they have been dropping it is pretty much a given that the dlc will be Dwarf/Darkspawn related, probably a Deep Roads expedition.

There has been a ton of data added over the last couple of weeks about Darkspawn, where they came from and the different types of Darkspawn. We are now getting loads of information on Dwarves, their class system, who the Legion is  and the workings of the Shaperate.

I just wish they'd actually market the coming DLC a bit more, outside of just Twitter etc.  Sure, social media is all the rage now--but how many people are watching and following social media for a game/company that they don't already know about?  Maybe I'm just clueless about this because I haven't actually joined any social media?

Lol, I actually said something very similar in the DA:I Twitter thread. Sure, I have a twitter and facebook accounts but I don't really check them that often and I most definitely don't follow every single dev from BioWare in the off chance someone will say something that may hint at what could be coming. So, from time to time I check the DA:I Twitter thread. Having said that, I only found out about JoH the same day it was announced/released because I happened to check my Twitter feed. I had some advance warning for the stuff packs because I started checking the twitter thread. However, how many people do that on a daily or even weekly basis? Sure, there may be hundreds, thousands even, but that doesn't sound like a very large target market to me. If anything, I find it to be a very poor marketing strategy.

What does it say when there are no announcements in the "News & Announcements" subforum of DA:I? Go ahead, check it for yourself, not a single (pinned) thread announcing JoH, Spoils of the Avvar, or Spoils of the Qunari. When "Spoils of the Qunari" was accidentally released ahead of time for Xbox One what was the response? Silence, deafening silence. I ask you, what's the point of keeping secret the release date of a pack that gives you a couple of armours, a throne, and a mount? I don't have a f***ing clue.

Look, at the end of the day, I don't have the time to waste gathering clues about what BioWare may or may not be doing nor, really, should I have to. Frankly, I'm dangerously approaching the point where I seriously don't care. I do appreciate forthcomingness. I hate to bring up the obvious example but at least CDPR was open enough to say, "Look, this is what we're going to do. This is our business plan for TW3. We have these many free DLC that we'll release over time and then we have two expansions planned that'll focus on this and that with a probable release date of such and such." This would be ideal but why don't we start with something small? How about you start by giving us info on whatever DLC you're going to release a week, preferably two, before launch? It's not too much to ask, is it?

Thank you for answering my question. As stated in my original post this thread was not meant to be a criticism of your practices so much as it was inspired by genuine curiosity. Thank you again for taking the time to give us some insight into the dev process and producing so many games i have come to love.

Thank you Mr. Johnson. I just have one question and that is, shouldn't you include in the list of DLC for ME3 the Extended Cut ?
I believe at the time, I read that all DLC planned by Bioware Edmonton, like Leviathan, was put on hold to complete the Extended Cut, therefore delaying other content.

That is indeed a correct point :) I cant remember if all staff was on EC from the beginning or moved more to it near the end. I also cant recall what the timeline with Leviathan exactly was. Since I cant recall the time extended cut took, if it took a month and a half then that pretty much makes Hakkon and Leviathan equal at ~4 months after launch.

So does that mean we'll have to wait till November 2015 for the next DAI story related DLC??

When everybody goes back to work/school. What a perfect timing... Bah, I'll be glad to have a new DLC whenever it comes out anyway.

Mark Darrah said we are getting dlc "really soon." I realize he is still being vague, but I'm going out on a limb and assuming he means within the next month. So August...maybe. :)

@BioMarkDarrah Any chance you can define the word "soon" for #DAI fans who might be waiting for something? ;)

Have ANY of the devs commented about the interminable DLC delay in ANY of the various threads related this subject recently?? I've suspected for long weeks that an internal embargo has been in effect, so I would love to be proven wrong on that.

It won't be tomorrow, sadly. They would have had to patch in the game resources today, and that didn't happen. I suppose it might be remotely possible for a new patch to drop in the next four hours, but it isn't likely. I guess the only thing either of us can do is cross our fingers and check back next week.

Is there any chance we could get a patch tomorrow or do patches only drop on Mondays?
