I'm going to build a PC this fall, because I want to go back to playing Mass Effect on PC. I've played it on PC before on a laptop. Since I am creating a new build, I'm going to most likely install Windows 8.1. I'm also buying the Trilogy Box Set (Retail). My question is regarding compatibility. Will The games work on Windows 8.1? I've read that people had problems running ME1-3 on 8.1. Is this still an issue? Can I install on play on 8.1 (I'm also aware that you need Origin for all three).

Skip Win8.1 and install Win10. And yes, the Origin-versions work on 8.1 and 10 flawlessly.

Oh, and I don't mean digital either. I meant the actual Disk copy of the box set, which I know needs Origin. Is Windows 10 available yet?

ME1 and 2 don't require Origin but you should register your keys there. Origin will give you the 2 ME1 DLC for free and remove the annoying Securom-DRM. There about half a dozen free DLC for ME2 that install automatically if you use Origin. You can still use the discs to install the games and then use Origin to validate the data and download all the patches and DLC.

And Windows 10 came out today.

First, if you can, upgrade your OS to Win10 for free. Then, if necessary, you should be able to run most games though you may need to run them via compatibility mode with Win7 or 8/8.1 if they aren#t natively supported by Win10.

I can't exactly say if ME1 will work because I did a clean install and thus have to install everything again, but there should be little problem running the games.

As a matter of fact, I'm buying a brand new PC (Building it in fact!), so it will be a new install for each game. I'm buying the Trilogy box set (Retail. Not digital.).

The only game I see you potentionally giving trouble is ME1. Iirc that game required compatibility mode with Windows Vista SP2 to run properly on my machine (native Windows 7 HP 64bit).

Well, just got to see what comes, then we may help out with whichever specific problem you may (!!!) have.

My laptop was Windows 7 and I didn't have to change the compatibility to Vista. ME1 worked perfectly from the start on Windows 7. And it was HP.

I just hope that BioWare/EA will fix any issues that may happen with Windows 10. They should be aware of people who update their system and those who are playing Mass Effect for the first time on PC.

Well, if Windows 10 came out today, I doubt many (if any) people know if a eight year old game is stable.
