I'm doing the Ashley romance for the first time.
What is the least number of missions to get her back onboard the Normandy?

I think it's 4. Priority Palaven, Sur'Kesh, Tuchanka and Citadel II.

However some of the minor missions won't be available after Citadel II anymore (Grissom Academy for example).

You have to do one of either the Primarch's or Wrex/Wreav's missions before Priority Tuchanka will be available.

I'm doing the Ashley romance for the first time.
What is the least number of missions to get her back onboard the Normandy?

Most playthroughs I make a beeline for the VS and Tali before taking on any other missions to get the full squad for the most of the game. The most efficient way to do it is Palaven>Sur'kesh> Turian Platoon or Attican Traverse: Krogan Team (Rachni mission generally takes longer to clear by several minutes but not a big deal either way)>Tuchanka> Citadel II.

However, doing this will make Grissom unavaliable if you don't do it before Citadel II, losing its war assets (including Jack if she's alive), and if you choose to do Turian Platoon, you will have to do Tuchanka: Bomb immediately after the Coup in order not to fail it (due to 3 mission limit after completing the former before the bomb detonates). I've never had a problem with failing the VS's repuation check, but you may want to check the requirements for Ashley before starting up Tuchanka, because next visit to the Citadel will initiate the coup and thus remove the ability to improve your standing. Since you are doing the Ashley romance, you will probably want to visit her in the hospital all 3 times and buy the Tennyson poems for all the dialogue anyway.

** Yes, I've had the bomb go off on a previous playthrough.
II No DLC's, so not an issue.
I Jack's still alive, so I got her.

I was getting worried because Ashley only ever said "Shepard" or other minor conversation, but she invited me to meet her on the Citadel, so we're on again now.
