I'm going to build a PC this fall, because I want to go back to playing Mass Effect on PC. I've played it on PC before on a laptop. Since I am creating a new build, I'm going to most likely install Windows 8.1. I'm also buying the Trilogy Box Set (Retail). My question is regarding compatibility. Will The games work on Windows 8.1? I've read that people had problems running ME1-3 on 8.1. Is this still an issue? Can I install on play on 8.1 (I'm also aware that you need Origin for all three). What about Windows 10? Note that I'm buying the physical retail copy of the box set.

I'm on 8.1 and there's no problem playing all three games with it. I'm still waiting for Win 10 upgrade so I'll get back to you about this.

Just upgraded my PC from win 8.1 to win 10. Played Mass Effect 3 for an hour or two and boot up an NG+ with ME2. There's definitely an increased in frame rates, less lags and I'm not even on a gaming PC. Though, I don't see that much different for ME1 but maybe its because of MEUITM and usual texture loading probs.

Personally, Win 8.1 is a decent compromise from Win 8 but its not a fix. One of the things, I really hate was the Start menu simply call up a fullscreen display. I'm have a 20-inch monitor non-touchscreen, Win 8 and 8.1 are created as a hybrid OS. Tablet features are plain useless on desktop.

If you have the right hardware and specs just go for it. If you have to make a choice, choose Win 7 or Win 10 but just skip Win 8/8.1. You get Directx 12 with Win 10 and for PC gamers, I'm sure its worth the hype.
