This seems like it would be a lot of work to address something that only bothers a small number of people.

U pointed out the most important point. Geography ! The witcher is from Europe, they don't see nudity as a threat but a natural treat.

I think you have some misconceptions about Europe. After all your american culture has taken a deep root here and so part of your attitudes towards things has also migrated. They might not be as strong but they are present. At least in UK.

I think we have a superficial amount of American culture as an overlay but below the surface we are very different.
Think about it: could you imagine an American complaining about a really bad meal to your fellow diners; yet when the waiter turns up telling them how wonderful it was?
Or forming a queue to get to a queue?
Or saying "sorry" when someone bumps in to you?
Or secretly taking pleasure when something turns out rubbish as it vindicates a general view of the world being fairly rubbish but what can you do eh?
Or being largely secular and viewing outbursts of religion as being very strange? Even our supposed state church is basically a social club for tea and biscuits.
Let's not even get started on guns.

Wow, is this thread still rolling on?

And most of us wear clothing....

Why do you suppose that is?

  • For warmth
  • To keep dust/the elements away from sensitive parts
  • To allow for stuff to be carried
  • As a mark of status

But when those things are not required, in the right setting, no issue with them coming off...

Same approach as in DAI would be perfect, none of this silly underwear showering.

Well yes. And the tea drinking. I knew this american girl from Florida in uni who was surprised about a notion of electric kettles. They will never understand what it is when you say sorry to dogs or even inanimate objects you accidentally bump into. Its also possibly my view of this is coloured by the fact that I do not have a sex life as such. It has been rather long...

No such a thing as an all-encompassing European culture; Britain, generally speaking, has a more conservative attitude towards sex and nudity than say Holland (probably still more relaxed than the States though)... but we're probably some of the most liberally sweary, fighty b*stards in the world! Going out, getting lagered up, having a fight and attempting to pull actually has a specific phrase in Britain - it's called Friday Night. :/

I have a theory that politeness exists largely to avoid getting yourself killed - the more martial the history, the more etiquette is in place to avoid a potentially fatal faux pas. Which is why the English and Japanese have reputations for being polite ;)

I don't know how it looks like in other European countries but in Czech republic we have 30 years old TV series for kids with fully naked (frontal) woman and no one saw that as problem, even when it was shot during quite prudent communist era. Hence current US puritanism is bottomless source of fun for us.

Nah, sorry, I didn't grow up in the West Mids ... accent is more generic south-east I'm afraid (my parents are from Kent and I've more their accent than anything).

That's a shame. I think having a shep from Dudley would have been brilliant.
"Alllroiite Saaren.."

Anyway. We are in agreement - separate USA and RotW editions, problem solved.

Americans aren't as prudish about explicit content in games or film as Europeans often imagine.

The U.S. does have its share of religious folk, or people who are non-religious but still have some of the stuffy Protestant culture of their ancestors, but they are not even close to a majority. They're just very vocal.

Consider the popularity of shows like Game of Thrones for example, which can hardly go an episode without some nudity.

Boardwalk Empire had a lot of full-frontal penetrative scenes as well.

As long as BioWare doesn't go that far, I would hope that they're safe from too much persecution.

Bioware games are tame compared to a lot of what is popular on American TV. Even the trash reality TV shows often have more explicit content. (Naked and Afraid, Naked Dating, ect)

Not that I'm arguing that Bioware should include explicit content just for shock value or titillation of course, as some of those TV shows do, but its worth pointing out that Bioware's games are tame in comparison.

Which doesn't make sense to me because they just censor those areas anyway, at least according to the commercials.

Or saying "sorry" when someone bumps in to you?

I know a lot of people who do this.

They blur out the fronts but not the back.

I suppose the ratings system for network television has the separate nudity and partial nudity categories as the ESRB, since naked asses aren't censored but genitalia or breasts are.

What mass effect needs is some more smut and innuendo.

I recently caught some of Watchmen on Spike TV, and Dr. Manhattan's ass was blurred. What an age we live in.

That's weird. Even based on those ridiculous naked survivor shows, I figured butts are actually fair game.

It is inconsistent.

There are some shows where there is nudity or profanity, and then you can channel surf to another network and run across a Hollywood film where the nudity has been blurred and the profanity replaced with ridiculous dubbing.
