I've been reading the thread, and this also confuses me.

I'm putting together a list of characters that don't say anything stronger than "damn" or "hell" in ME games.  I'm not going to pretend it's a very comprehensive list, since I'm just going off the top of my head.

Squad Mates that keep the cursing down mainly "damn" and "hell."  The same you find on most network TV channels at least in the US.

Wrex--Check.  He doesn't even drop a S-bomb, though he might have an B-bomb I'm not thinking of at the moment.

Wrex does drop an S-bomb in the Citadel dlc. So, one.

All aboard the SSV Bonobo Sailor. Everyone humps everyone else to say hello, while swearing their asses off.

Okay, now I really want to bump around Andromeda in the Bonobo.

Getting closer and closer to starting a thread asking whether BioWare should just go ahead and make Andromeda "T for Teen".

Be forewarned that such a thread will largely consist of me finding as many ways to say "No, no they shouldn't" as I can before it's inevitable closure.

And really I just can't understand how a reasonable adult can consider the content presented thus far in Bioware games to be excessive. I get why people consider the content in GTA or Saints Row or the Witcher or God of War to be excessive, though I may not always agree with them. But the content in Bioware's games has just been so mild that I do not understand it.

They should try out Duke Nukem Forever. Now that is a game was borderline AO-rated, but it was officially rated Mature at launch.

Its predecessor was not as crude in terms of nudity, although still had lots. Violence was the same

If this was your way of dissuading me, IT DIDN'T WORK, FIEND.

Ah, okay.  I changed it unknown.  So one S-Bomb.  Heh, two Krogan squadmates in the series and neither of them dropped an F-bomb.   :P

I find it interesting that so far, most of the squad mates don't use language that hasn't been shown in sitcoms like How I Met Your Mother.  Even the B-word has been used on mainstream network TV during Prime Time.

Oh god, don't remind me of that game. Worst sixty bucks I ever spent.

Not specifically because of the mature content - though, in my opinion, that game is definitely an example of how not to use it - but just because the quality was so poor and the camera made me motion sick.

I call bull$417!!

I've been playing these RPG games since they were still Black Isle, and while the Infinity Engine couldn't show sexual content due to being a sprite-based Infinity Engine game, they were seeding and using adult themes and artwork that set the stage for Bioware's quality reputation for nuanced, well-developed, and mature roleplaying environments.  Violent and bloody 'Chunking!" was already well-established in the games, and outright sex was part of the romantic narratives.

Just because it wasn't pixellated in graphic detail on-screen due to the technological limitations doesn't give you license to retcon reality with rose-colored glasses.

Well said. Not to mention, Baldur's Gate 1 started the trend of exploding bodies. Oh and don't forget: we have the option to brutally murder Dynaheir for the lols, amongst other issues.

Regarding sex: given the character models from BG1 all through KotOR, I really can't fathom how this could have even been pulled off. Animations were some of KotOR's biggest issues.

A toggle for explicit content annoys me in the same way trigger warnings annoy me. You're basically saying you arent grown up enough to handle certain things, and instead of getting over your own hang-ups, you are demanding the world cater to you.

Aren't you demanding the world cater to you right now by wanting them to not add a toggle because it's something you don't want?

No. I'm not asking them to cater to me because I'm not the one here asking for anything at all. Your logic doesnt even make sense. Please try again.

That'd only be true if people were actively asking BioWare to add swearing and sex in their games. They added that themselves without any pressure from players. People suggesting that they shouldn't block it out isn't the same as wanting to be catered to.

You're asking them to cater to you by asking them not to cater to others. At least the people asking for the toggle are asking for something optional.

It is sad, because I honestly do wish I could understand where you're coming from on this topic. Maybe if I could, then I could help change your mind, or I could become more sympathetic to your position.

But as it stands you and I may as well be speaking two different languages.

It wouldn't matter at this point of the dialogue anyway. Any discussion of this at this point will lead to further mocking.

Byne has a point here.

One side of this thread is arguing for Bioware to make the game they want to make with whatever content they feel is appropriate for that game. The other side is arguing for Bioware to make the game they want to make, but also to include a feature that shields them from any content that Bioware may feel is an appropriate part of their story, but that they are too sensitive to deal with.

That may sound harsh but that is the reality, from my perspective(and I'm not claiming a lack of bias here).

I'm not asking them to cater to me. If they add the toggle, I will be annoyed but wont campaign for its removal. I'm asking them to do what they want and not cater to others.

Maybe BioWare doesn't think that people will be bothered by nudity or sex because they make M-rated games for the 18-35 year old core gaming demograpic.

Perhaps they think that those people, well some of them at least, have their own experiences with sex and relationships and won't have a reactionary meltdown when they see as much skin as a HBO show.

Yes it is. If you like the status quo, asking for the status quo to continue is being catered to.

catering implies they go out of their way to attain the goal. The status quo being maintained is completely antithetical to that

Perhaps, but I know of a few sales within my own family that were likely missed because of such content. But that has been the case since cRPG's have chosen to go with a Mature rating.

Elhanan, are you trying to use anecdotal evidence again?^^

Did you count the ingame swear words, too? They made some up for the characters to use, like Tali's "bosh'tet".

I pointed out that we don't know what bosh'tet means, really.  We can guess, but we don't know.  It could be something really strong, like if you call someone a mother lover (in less nice terms,) or it could be as network TV friendly as calling someone a bastard.  Otherwise, I can't think of any alien curse words that I missed.  I also know that wasn't a full list.

This isn't me expressing any opinions about the thread directly.  I've already done that.  My feelings won't change, but I'm not here to try to flame anyone.  I just wanted to mention that the language in the ME games is actually very tame overall.  Most of it would fit just fine on most network channels here in the US.

Bosh'tet sounds like something an angry Russian grandmother would yell at one of the kids.

What I am seeing by those asking for censorship is a sense of entitlement.
