Well, earlier I read in here that SWTOR is rated T.

As someone else commented, there is much worse content than the occasional swear word or awkward love scene in Bioware games.

For instance, SWTOR has 2 factions. One is all sunshine and light, where the 'dark/light' choice is usually do you kill a defeated enemy or spare them.

The other faction has slavery, torture, mind tricks and wanton cruelty. The dark/light choices are more like 'do I kill the rebel slaves quickly or use a poison that slowly eats their insides out, killing them in a few weeks, after putting them through terrible agony'.

And guess which faction the kids want to play?

I'm not a kid and I preferred Dark Side as well on the Imperial faction.  I did so on my Sith Warrior, and most of her choices were more pragmatic (i.e "Do I let the soldiers turned into bots stay alive and useful?  Or do I shut them off for the sake of mercy?") I also played a Light Side Imperial Agent and I distinctly remember a lot of those choices involving release or mercy killing folks rather than torturing them.  I also did a LS Jedi Knight, and some of those choices aren't nearly as neat and clean like you say for the Republic.  It's even more pronounced if you play a Trooper.

The only one that truly fit that description of those choices regarding the Imperial faction was the dark side Sith Inquisitor.  That was silly as well as rather brutal at times and I completely agree with you in that context.  ("You didn't tell me I'm pretty with my Dark Side V looks!" Zap! +10 DS)

That aside, after playing three Imperial faction stories, two of which were Dark Side, it wasn't nearly as bad as you're depicting it to be.  -_-

I played both factions because it was fun.  I did it in WoW too. There is no real "kiddy" faction in most games.  People are people, just wearing their preferred pretty (or not-so-pretty) pixelated skin.  I've met 14 year olds that were more intelligent and mature than some of the 40 year olds in MMOs, and faction didn't mean squat.  Alliance/Horde or Imperial/Republic.  All the same stuff.  The maturity level isn't better or worse there between the two groups.  Both have their bullies and brats.   <shrug>

Well, yeah, I didn't mean to say ONLY kids play Sith, I just suspect many of them prefer it. Lots of people, kids or otherwise appear to play it because 'pubs are ghey', according to the general chat and some guildies I've come across. Same with Horde/Alliance as mentioned above.

Lots of adults enjoy it and that's all good. I haven't really played it much but I understand Sith side has better storylines. I wasn't knocking the game, I enjoy it.

Anyway my point was that there are worse things in many games than boobs and swear words.

Sorry if I came off sounding touchy.  I've heard the "well, only kids like [insert faction here]" for a long time now.  That goes back to when I first started playing MMOs in 2004.  My folks started with EQ1 and played that for over 6 years before they played WoW, and they were the ones that taught me how to laugh that misconception.  Yes, the better part of 8 years of my life was in WoW, off and on.  Feel free to laugh.

During that time period, where I also played EQ2, (prior to WoW) RIFT and ToR, I honestly found that there was no difference in the age or maturity levels between any two factions.  I was a co-GM of a raiding guild on Alliance side during the Lich King days, and I was in a raiding guild on Horde side during Cataclysm and Mists.  PvP'd on both factions too, off and on.

I didn't raid in ToR, but from day-to-day interaction, it was the same thing.  It didn't matter if I had fired up my Imp Agent or my Jedi Knight.  You had your mature folks, your immature brats, your elitists, your bullies, your awesome friendly types.  Nine years of MMOs taught me that people are just that.   Pixels nor faction really means squat.

I only played a LS Jedi Knight, so I'm not sure I can compare story quality.  His story was good, and so was the Trooper.  My favorite was my Imp Agent, but that's because Jo Wyatt was the voice and I ended up playing DA2 for the first time right after I finished her quests.

I didn't figure you were ripping on the stories, and I agreed completely with you as far as themes being as important if not more so than mild nudity, PG-13 language and blood.  That's why I brought it up.  Dream's thread goes into what makes a ME game merit a Mature rating beyond just blood or side boob or language.  Story themes can be just as critical.

Sorry for the misunderstanding there.

You're making me feel old. :P

I spent lots of time in EQ and EQ2, met lots of nice people there I still keep in touch with. In fact I played SWTor with them too. They are the only group I'd consider playing any online game with for any length of time. Not particularly interested otherwise. Never got into WoW though.

I'm 36 in September.  So I'm old too.  Us old MMO vets should stick together.   :P

This isn't to you directly.  I'm not trying to put a tone into your words that you might not intend, but I have seen those arguments used before.

Part of the point I was trying to get at is that having "mature" content, like blood or gore or sex, can appeal to everyone, not just "the kiddos."  I heard the same claim about "kids" applied in games with a "nicer" faction, that it was for people that couldn't "handle" being bad.

I don't think it's immature to enjoy having blood or gore or nudity or language in a game.  However, I don't think that it's immature to prefer games without those elements.  I play all sorts of games of various ratings.  If I'm having fun, I don't give a flying pyjak about the rating.

As I've stated before, my feelings in regards to ME's content as well as it's rating (as of ME3 anyway,) have not changed.  I do prefer the ME series as an M rating.  I am also in the camp that feels those filters would be a waste of time if ME:A was going to be M rated.  They should probably just tone down the content and go with a lower rating rather than using all those filters.  If they decided to make future ME games rated T due to cutting out blood, ect ect, then I'd respect their decision.  As long as I feel like I got my money's worth, I'm open minded.  A game rating isn't a decision in my game purchases, most of the time.

Sometimes reading this thread bugs me a little bit though, mainly due to the responses the OP has gotten from some...people.  I will never think it's right to call folks babies or kids just because they would prefer a game in this way.  Also, I do like how respectful the OP is trying to be about their request.  It isn't in a demanding tone, and I think the discussion of ratings, theme and tone for ME games is a great one for the BSN.  Plus, they got a dev to come and give some feedback, so I'd certainly consider this thread a big win.

In all, this has been a wonderfully civil debate to read and participate in.   :D

Thank you.

Preferring to avoid those elements in one game series does not make one a reactionary puritan, religious zealot, or anything else that has been suggested in this thread. It also does not mean that one does not consume that kind of content in other forms of media. It might simply mean that people have different ideas about what they want in their escapist fantasy and would like greater variety in the content available - imagine that!

Has largely been my experience as well over the years, having done high level raiding on both factions at one point or another. In the end its more about the person between the keyboard and the chair than what faction or kind of gameplay they prefer. I have seen more than my fair share of ninjalooters, rude people etc on both alliance and horde.

I'm actually happy about my age, though it can be sneaky.  For example, when I decided to look up something regarding Dave Grohl today, one of the top suggestions was, "Was Dave Grohl in Nirvana?"  <shudder>

One of my goals sometimes when I post is to try to find common ground among the BW posters in friendly ways.  Less than 20 years ago, being into video games while being over the age of 12 was considered geeky and weird.  RPGs fans were the geekiest and weirdest of them all.

Now here we are, all ages and backgrounds and nationalities, discussing the merits behind themes in video games, what they mean to us, and why we consider it important.   I'm a dork, but I have to stop every now and then and go, "This is awesome."

Edit: @time Gimmie back my brain cell, you ninja!   :P  Kidding.

I feel young now at 26.

I will also note having played a lot of WoW on both Horde and Alliance side, neither one has more of the "kiddies" on it in my experience. My Alliance side raiding guild in Wrath had nobody under the age of 18, and we weren't even trying to restrict it to adults only.

Although our guild chat conversations could get adult only pretty frequently.

I actually don't sweat real age online most of the time.  If you conduct yourself with maturity (being a smartaleck doesn't mean you're immature ;) ) and some respect, then I don't even question it.

Guild conversations at 2am....half of the raid drunk on vent, the other half (me) sober and laughing hard.  I could never play WoW drunk.   Man, there were some conversations that would make a lot of people blush.

There's a reason why the words "not rated for online content" are attached to online games.  When in doubt, cover your butt with paperwork.   :P

You're not that young, you just need to get some levels.  Those next few experience points catch up real quick.  In time, you'll find more and more of those zones to grind for some serious life exp.     ;)

I was the baby of the group too, when I was younger.  Trust me, that'll change before you realize it happened. Oh goddess it will.
