I'm wondering about this too. Was it actually said that Gears of War experienced an increase in sales due to its language filter?

I think you can certainly spin it that way, which is what some posters are doing. But unless they say that it was the case flat out, there's room for skepticism. I'm skeptical for the reasons I listed above (in addition to my suspicion that the majority of people playing M rated games are not, in fact, bothered by such content, but we've determined that that's a nonstarter here, I think).

That's what I was thinking too. Granted, we now know that there is precedent for a language filter, so that's something. But we still have the "correlation does not equal causation" thing to deal with.

Does anyone know (or did it already come up) how it was handled in the other examples given apart from Starcraft, which was just a chat censor? I've never really played any of the other series listed.

We've established that the gore filter is relatively simple, compared with the other stuff.

This reminds me, I've had a conversation about mature content filters before... it was back then:

Hmmm does putting on Pyro-vision goggles count as a filter?

The only other game I owned on the list was MGS4 ... that only has an in-game blood toggle; no profanity filter in it.

Well... I found another Epic game, Bulletstorm, which features the same language filter as Gears of War... and ... that might even be necessary. Just listen to this (warning: very strong language):

Daemon,

Your posts are well constructed and insightful.

The OP seems an obvious troll, baseD on your research. My guess is that his resume now lists this thread as a "success".

The others in support of the OP obviously don't have the mettle to coherently respond to your arguments.

I wish they did.

I would enjoy a good conversation on how censorship is beneficial in this context.

Well done, sir.

Close; no motive to debate those with little more to say than insults.

Here's a thought. Maybe people would be willing to debate if Elhanan actually wants to debate rather than 1-2 short sentence, sometimes with no relation to the posts at hand. Also, playing the victims like people are out to get him.

Since you've actually made a reasoned response - I'll save you the effort of reading everything I've posted; my position boils down to this:

snip

I get that.

I get the resource allocation problems, I get the extra costs and time, and how the effort in the end would not be worth it in the long run with what we've come to expect with Bioware games with multiple dialogue options and branching paths compared to the more linear style of the other games.

It doesn't bother me personally if Bioware doesn't have one, but it also wouldn't bother me at all if Bioware decided to put one in if they felt the potential gains outweighed the costs.

That's pretty much my position.

I've said it before and I know I'll say it again. My highest priority when I play games, is to have fun playing the game. Do I, as a gamer, like having more options? Most certainly. Do I understand if some of those options are limited because of in-game narrative or simply lack of resources. Yup.

I simply don't see the need to get on the people who make the call for the filter or toggle when we know it's most likely just a dream of some people, as the OP did in a very respectful manner, of features they would like to see in the future, even if those features simply cannot be implemented for any number of reasons.

Technically there's always room for skepticism.

I looked online about people asking if they could turn down the gore and profanity and how it impacted their game. I saw a couple of discussion boards where parents with younger kids (10-14 year olds) wanting to play the game talking about being able to buy the game so long as the filter was on, and they otherwise would not have bought the game had it not been there.

I'm not sure how they fit into the overall sales of the game and if they had a big impact or not, but I saw enough people on these various boards talking about it to know that the market is there.

Haven't been on here in a while, but what the hell is this thread and what the hell is that letter? I sincerely hope it's satire.

'Dear Bioware, I don't want you to censor your games, but I do want you to spend time and resources on a function that allows me to censor your games.'

The fact that buying video games is entirely voluntary, makes requesting said games adhere to your specific sensibilities even more laughable.

Here's my request to the OP, either grow up or grow a spine. Failing that, ****** off and play candy crush.

Aww... I didn't get a response from Dragonflight288... now I'm sad. :(

Did you guys know that there is a Ned Flanders inspired metal band? I feel like that's something a few people in this thread would listen to.

I get that.

So .... in essence you actually agree with me?!

I've never said I was opposed to the idea in principle; except in mockery, on the other virtually identical thread which I was hoping would just die as we don't need two of these things. All I've done is explain the technical aspects of the situation as I see it... and stated that I really can't see the ROI there. I never jumped down the OP's throat on this and I've attempted to explain the technical situation objectively as best I can for the most part.

If you're really bored go back through the previous 67 pages and read everything I wrote. My very first post went to the effect of "I wouldn't use it but I can't object to someone else wanting it"... then I thought about it a bit more and the potential implications, read what some other people (including Bryan Johnson) wrote, and decided that I still wouldn't use it, most other people wouldn't use it, and it there would be some pretty serious technical, financial and time-based costs which would impinge upon the core game development.

We're not talking a ketchup filter here but something far more time consuming.

I'm assuming Elhanan put me on ignore (I think I know exactly which post triggered it if he did - and it wasn't in this thread) - but before that every response he gave back basically ignored everything that you've just said you get; he doesn't get it or he deliberately doesn't want to.

If you want me to be subjective on the matter and state my actual opinion I can do... but I'll have to be very careful how I word it.

MEA light.  24 varieties of non-lethal weapons, from stun batons to tranquilizer darts to the infamous sonic screwdriver.  Mako outfitted with 2000 watt speaker array to pacify crowds by blasting classic music.  Invest points in a special charisma power...enemies factions who've spent generations trying to eradicate one another can be brought to their senses with a few words of wisdom.  Spend quality downtime with your companions reciting religious passages and playing charades.  Hold hands with that special someone.  Yay.

I'm also curious about the demographic for a Bioware game vs. a Gears of War game. Granted, I started playing KotOR when I was 14, but looking at many of my kid cousins + friends, and they seem instantly attracted to the action-style games: Gears of War, Call of Duty, etc. Given the choice, I suspect they'd grab the ME3 multiplayer before ever getting their hands on the single-player.

And yes, I realize this is anecdotal, but it got me wondering.

As far as I know, Bio is working on this game and there won't be any recurring characters. I really doubt they have the time or inclination to work on a filter.

Personal insults? Seriously? I get that you disagree with OP (as do I in fact) but attacking an individual's character is very sad. If your argument is so compelling and OP's request is so 'laughable' personal attacks shouldn't be necessary.

So in this weeks balance changes the nerf gun will be nerfed to allow for less nerfs to be fired per second ... wait ... what!?

... actually, the original request says nothing about gore, mutilation, exploding gibbage or blood ... merely swearing and nudity. So they'd be fine with say Brutal Doom with the sound down since I don't think it's got any nudity in:

Aaaah Doom ... a game for a much simpler and more innocent time.

Unrelated to the discussion but its worth noting how a mod for a 2 decades old game still plays and looks more fun than the majority of modern shooter offerings...

I guess I have the remake of shadow warrior but not much more than that.

It's still got a fairly active modding scene... id certainly did something right when they made that game!

Oh ... and there's a remake on the way: http://doom.com/en-gb/
