Well, personally I don't need artificial enhancement for an enjoyable experience

There's a hint of irony to say this about a video game :P

The OP isn't talking about story content though.  it's about 1) gore 2) language and 3) nudity.

You can have a mature, even dark story without going overboard on these things.

True, but then Mass Effect has never really been out there with this anyway, and neither has Dragon Age, for that matter.

Yes, we do, it's exaggeration. It's special effects like the special button. It's enhancing the visual effect for people who like big explosion and the likes. It enhances the experience for me. I hope that it remains that way. The content itself is already pretty dark and many of the deaths are even more gruesome on-screen like Kelly's death in ME2. Exploding heads are mild in comparison. It seems like pick and choose what you want to be offended by.

You can close your eyes when you notice Kelly is starting to deteriorate. You can't close your eyes in the middle of combat. Just sayin'.

And I think it says something about how desensitized we've all become when exploding heads are "mild"

Well, we all have different opinions on what we want. That's why the argument happen in the first place. I don't want the game to be toned down just for a few minority who wants it. If they want a toggle, make it a DLC or low priority to consider if they have time. I would rather for them to focus on the game itself. The game marketed to the mature audience, and some expect to see gore and blood in it in spectacular way.

Yes, we become desentisized compared to the past. The Simpsons was rauchy and edge for its time, now shows like Family Guy and South Park are the norm with the sex and violence. Triple A mature games nowadays are all trying to appeal to the average kids and adults who want to play those games (Let's face it, kids play mature games all the time since they have parents that don't care or "cool" parents). If they want to success, they can't make a "mild" game with no visual or impressive gore.

Yeah, I know it wasn't about story content. That was MY point. It is additional work to offer this filter, and when the player is already exposed to worse, which cannot be filtered, why go to additional work to filter out more mild stuff?

People are also significantly underestimating the amount of work involved to make this work. When someone selects such a filter, most likely a parent, they will then expect the general game to actually adhere to it. How would a parent react when they buy their kid DAO, turn on the profanity filter, then get to hear Timmy describe the cannibalistic Broodmother encounter over dinner.

Interesting thing about DAI, they both dialed up the sexuality/nudity, and dialed it down simultaneously... meaning, there are some romances without sex scenes at all. I think that is fair and a clever approach to including more variety in the companion relationships. I'm hoping to see something similar in ME:A... if for no other reason than the whole "flirt, flirt, sex scene before final battle" formula really needs something new.

I guess DAO and DA2 was doing it wrong then with their gore toggles...

I don't remember gore toggles at all, I only remember blood splatter toggles. I turn those off, but thats only because I think it looks stupid in cinematics, not because I'm offended by gore. Furthermore, that doesn't stop gore, it just stops blood from appearing on your armor and face for prolonged periods of time. You can still explode enemies if I recall.

I do agree, being graphic isn't necessary for a story to be dark. A video game doesn't necessarily need romance, either. Content like that is just a part of the Mass Effect series though. Some people like those elements in the game. Those who don't have already played all three games in the Mass Effect series anyways (or haven't played the games at all, in which case, why please them?). Changing it at this point doesn't do anyone any good.

The most they can do is add toggles, like the OP said.

An unreasonable request given that you could turn soldiers into bloody goo in ME3. My advice to the OP: play Mario Brothers instead. I'll be motor boating Asari and blasting my way through aliens.

2. a tick box option to skip sex scenes entirely. minimal programming adjustments required.

3. a tick box option to bleep out words. minimal programming adjustments required.

2 might work if you decide to just replace sex scenes with a fade-to-black, but you'd better be sure there's no actual dialogue being skipped over.

3 isn't a real solution at all. Talk about immersion-breaking ideas.

LOL.

I believe the question "3. What is the value to Bio?" is the content request that if implement can turn sales off.  For example, certain countries with large populations have strict moral codes that will disallow entry of a product of questionable/promotional activities in the game.

Investors are a grouchy lot.

They didn't make any changes to Dragon Age: Inquisition so it could be sold in India, where it violated its obscenity laws.

It is true that you don't need gore, nudity, and harsh language to tell a mature story. It's true that when you go overboard with one or all of these elements, it can become comical. But it's also true that proper use of these elements can certainly help tell the story and set the tone.

The silliest moments in Sin City are when we have all these tough guys going to the roughest, rowdiest strip club in town and the main attraction dancer doesn't take off any of her clothes. I don't care if it is Jessica Alba, those guys are going down the street to the club where a solid seven is dancing with her top off. The netflix Daredevil series has a few instances where the characters really should be saying "f*ck" or "f*cking" and instead say "freak" or "freaking".

Moments like this feel really artificial and can take you out of the moment and hurt the tone of the work. Bioware should include whatever content they feel is appropriate for the tone and atmosphere they're trying to get across.

What's the problem with nude bodies?

As long as it's tasteful. But seeing breasts and a buttcheek isn't as bad as what you're suggesting.  I'm no prude either.. But you know. Some people (like OP) will be offended.

I am fine with mild language. It is strong language that ruins the moment.

Mild language: Damn, hell, bastard, scumbag, crap = okay

Strong language: F**k, motherf**kers... et cetera = not okay

There's nothing wrong with nudity, although at the correct times.

Be kind of weird if you were fighting a guy and he randomly pulls his dick out.

Depends on what the moment is. There are times when someone saying crap instead of sh*t or freak instead of f*ck just sounds silly and unnatural to me. Strong language conveys strong emotion and emphasis. Over use or use at inappropriate times can ruin a scene, but it's omission can ruin it just as surely.

That's funny, D*** and GD are the only cuss words that make me uncomfortable. I love hearing f**k, motherf**kers, s***t, etc.. XD

Personally I have few limits on the cursewords I use. Pretty much the only ones I don't throw around casually are racial or homophobic slurs. I'll say them when discussing the word itself, or when quoting someone who used them, but that's about it.

F*ck, motherf*cker, sh*t, c*nt are all part of my regular vocabulary, though.
