That's just it:  not sleeping with Liara does not break off the romance.  You can have the romance without the showing "quite a lot of blue skin".  That is what's important in this case.  Romance without sex scene.  Or, to be more specific, the nudity.

I'm pretty sure sending Liara out of your cabin when she wants to sleep with you ends the romance.

Nope.  It's confirmed not to.  Her picture is on Shepard's desk in ME2

Try the same with Ash or Kaidan, would their picture still be in ME2?

Yes.  The romance locks in with the conversation en route to Ilos, regardless of the outcome.

Ok, I didn't know that. I usually skip romances in ME1 completely unless I'm going the Liara route for ME1-3.

I do not remember her attire; just those tattoos. It was her language I loathed, and did not wish to repeat the game to hear more of it.

And a Toggle would have been of a great boon for my gameplay.

And changed the character

Strictly speaking, Shepard kidnaps Jack in ME2. She's not really the bad person in that deal, and the profanity is pretty central to her character (as is her basically nude state of dress). This is what I mean by toggles being unworkable, and requiring the devs to avoid topics.

Yet her loyalty outfit and the DLC outfit have her wearing a normal amount of clothes, so Bioware apparently didn't see it as that central.

For me; Yes, and would have been so much better. Those that left the filter off could experience the original experience. Win; Win.

Right because who cares what the writers wanted to do for the character just do it my way

Yeah, you''re completely right. Characters absolutely don't ever change over time, being completely static, allowing us to infer things about them before their watershed moment of closure using their behaviour afterwards.

Her loyalty mission is all about coping with her abuse. So are her tattoos.

As to the DLC outfit, well, there's lots of sillyness happening with DLC outfits. Like changing Garrus's broken armour, which messes with his visual theme.

And I seek a way to lessen some of that dialogue. Currently I bench characters, skip scenes, skip romances, etc, but with other titles have to skip the game completely. Before Bioware reaches that point for me to make that choice, I will continue to ask for a method to filter the language.

I would not say was extremely prone to profanity :)

I researched Jack's dialogue tree in the recruitment and loyalty missions of ME2 and counted a total of 7 uses of "profane" language (Using the definition as per the Clean Airways Act 2003). There were another two mildly taboo words that are not, as yet, considered profane (Damn and ***** slang term for cat). Jack's favorite curse in ME2 was "What the hell?" I noticed around 4 instances of this form of self censoring dialogue. Also, Jack didn't drop an F-Bomb until the end sequence of her loyalty mission; a mission which was scripted to show a scene of extreme child abuse and sadistic and unethical science.

First meeting, paragon dialogue path, she can say "you sound like a *****." But I'll accept that "extremely" might not have been the right choice of words on my part. My point was that certain characters, word choice is an essential part of their characterization. Mordin would be a different character without his beige prose, and Jack would be a different character without her course language.

No. Just like they could have characters that don't swear, they could have characters that would. With Dragon Age and Mass Effect, there was a range of characters when it came to swearing from often to not at all.

Well, now I'm confused. I don't see the difference between this scenario and what the writers currently do.

People offended by harsh language should go out, find a group of 9 years old and listen to them before asking for things as stupid as mature content filters in a mature rated game.

@Battlebloodmage: I'm talking about general situations. Of course language and culture barriers are going to be an issue. I guess what I'm trying to say (without sounding like an *** hole, lol) is that people should place more importance on the intent behind what someone says. Some people get offended by the silliest of things, to the point of absurdity (your N word scenario, for example). Simply because someone is offended by something doesn't mean that they should receive special treatment.

Unless you live in Middlesbrough - in which case you're likely to end up stabbed/mugged.

That's because there isn't one. For language, the best available way for Bioware to appeal to both sides is to do what they are currently doing, rather than go more in one direction or the other.

I really can't see why that would be a concern for them, at least at present. Sure, it would make "both sides" happy. Only, based on general support for this feature, Bryan's own comments, and other factors, one of those sides is a bit more bereft of support than the other.

As long as no one's support extends to more than forum posts I am not inclined to take that side seriously. It's a matter of minutes to create a poll. It wouldn't take long to draft an open letter (better than the OP). Posting both to several gaming forums wouldn't take much longer. All in all we're talking about maybe 2 hours of work at most.

The results would tell us how much support for the toggle idea there really is... but until then it's just another group of fans making unreasonable demands of a developer. The fact that no one is doing so is telling. They know they wouldn't get enough support to change anything.

And with that I'm done with that topic. Continue to post your demands, I no longer care.

I love all of the mass effect games and I partially agree that bioware should allow this in settings I know that lots of people could care less but there are those out there who love gaming but don't play the really good games because their parents don't like the language. I would love for them to play ME so I would have to agree that they should put these into the settings. This will in turn allow for a wider demographic and this way the can get more people playing these games.

Considering this same talking point has been repeated over and over by many of the anti-togglers this may be a relief to all those that have complained about repetitiveness in the thread. Thank you.

To those continuing with this thread: I've begun work on seeking out those who may support a content control slider. A BioWare group will be formed once particular milestones are reached.
