I give up; how do I unzip mod folders into the override folder?

I want to play DA:O again (after a year-long absence), but I wanted to use a few simple mods this time just to enhance the game experience (since I've played so many times).

So far I've successfully integrated Skip the Fade and More Hairstyles mods, but those were easy. I could manually download, redirect to the Bioware/DragonAge/packages/core/override page, and it worked.

I also want to add Improved Atmosphere, Grey Wardens of Ferelden Armor and Fan at Tier 7 (since I plan to play a rogue city elf), but these ones are harder because the computer can't read them. Every time I try to copy/paste or export into the override folder, nothing happens.

I downloaded WinZip and keep trying to use it unzip the mod files I manually downloaded into the override folder, but it just keeps saying it ran into a problem and "extraction effort fail."

What am I doing wrong? I'll admit I'm using the "Evaluation Version" of WinZip; am I supposed to buy it in order for it to successfully extract/unzip downloaded mod folders into the DAO override folder? (If so, it seems like kind of a let-down to have a "free" version of something that doesn't do anything. Why would I want to buy it when I don't even know if it'll work since it hasn't worked yet?)

I also tried downloading the latest 7-Zip 64-bit version for my desktop, since the Fang Tier 7 mod gave a link to it and said I should use that to extract the mod file, but when I tried using it it also didn't work. I tried the recommended 1-Zip file to extract the Fang Tier 7 mod into the DAO override folder like the mod instructions said, but like WinZip it just keeps saying it's unable to do it or "extraction failed."

What am I supposed to do? How did you all manage to download compressed files that need some sort of extraction file like WinZip or 7-Zip to open?

Do you open the archive and see files in it, or do you right-click on the archive and choose to extract?  As long as you can see files inside, try extracting the files into a folder where you know there are no permission issues, and then move them into the override.

I would ditch WinZip and just use 7zip.  It's completely free, no evaluation period or anything, and no nag.  It handles regular zips and rars fine.

I've tried opening the archive to see the files inside, but it doesn't work, not even with 7zip. =(

To use the Fang Tier 7 mod as an example, I just tried to use 7zip to open/look inside the file, but got the same little window saying "Windows can't open this file," with a link to suggested software I could download to decompress the folder, the same way it did before I downloaded any zip software.

I tried simply clicking on the Fang Tier 7 folder and extracting it (with the blue minus sign button) into the DragonAge/packages/core/override folder, but afterwards got a little window saying "Can not open file as archive." When I checked the override file elsewhere, it still only has the Skip the Fade and More Hairstyles mod in it.

Am I using 7zip wrong? I thought its whole purpose was to be able to decompress/open/unzip compressed folders like nexus mods and be able to unzip them into the override folder, but every time I try it doesn't work.

It may be that the file is an incomplete download, or even an HTML document (can happen if you right-click to save on a link that actually leads to a download page).  If the file is uncommonly small, or contains readable text if you open it in a text editor, then that's what happened.  Try downloading it again.

How can it be incomplete? I always click the "download manually" option of the Fang Tier v1_1. Other people have endorsed this mod, so it apparently worked for them. I've downloaded it several times and it never works. Why doesn't it work for me?

I clicked on the 7zip link on the Installation instruction on the mod description page. I downloaded the "7-Zip 15.05 beta (2015-06-14) for Windows" version since it's (apparently) the latest version and I have a 64-bit Windows desktop. Yet it doesn't decompress or unzip or what-have-you any zipped up mod files I download. I just get the same little window saying that windows can't open it and offer to find some other software (including WinZip) to decompress it.

And that's not even getting into all the trouble I've had trying to download the Improved Atmosphere or Grey Wardens of Ferelden mod.

I don't understand. It feels like everyone on the internet understands modding, but I don't. Yet, I don't want a million and a half mods. I just want a few simple ones to enhance the game experience (since I've played so many times before). Skip the Fade, nice hair, actual Grey Warden armor, and my City Elf Warden's mother's dagger that actually does damage. I'd even give up the Improved Atmosphere mod if it got the others working, but I just can't seem to unzip or extract any of the mod files I download. ='(

There are several ways it could be incomplete, and I mentioned one.  But if no mods work for you, then it may not be that way.

I don't know why it's not working for you.  I can only make educated guesses, and test those hypotheses by asking you questions and suggesting actions.  Can you report to me the file size of the Fang Tier 7 mod file?

It's also very difficult to diagnose a problem when I'm working blind.  Can you show a screenshot of your screen when you try to extract the contents of the archive?

Improved Atmosphere is known not to play nicely with others and is NOT a good mod for one of your first attempts at adding a mod.

I just downloaded manually and opened the file with 7zip with no problem.  Fang is a very small file, but that doesn't mean that there couldn't have been a 'glitch' (to use the technical term :D ) during your download causing it to be 'incomplete'.

Improved Atmosphere is a hellish mod. It's all explained very nicely, but it still takes a while to figure out. Mods are a wonderful thing, so I'm rooting for you, OP! I usually find if I'm having troubles with mods, just deleting everything out of the override folder, and the mod I'm trying to use, and just redownloading/starting over the whole process makes everything much easier.

I believe I use a full copy of WinZip so I don't think I can help with the whole unzipping process, but is it possible to use Nexus Mod Manager with the mods you're trying to install? NMM was super helpful for me for my first few mods.

Also, have you unzipped things in the past? Do you know how to unzip things in general?

I'm sorry for my outburst earlier today, it was very immature of me.

I sought several Youtube step-by-step tutorials and finally figured out how to apply all those mods; I'd been trying to unzip/export them directly from the download folder into the override folder, instead of unzipping/exporting them into their own folders, then dragging those folders into the override folder. Now that I've figured it out, I've got them all; Improved Atmosphere, a Grey Wardens of Ferelden mod that's compatible with it, a hair mod, and elf ears mod are all working nicely together so far.

The Fang mod is the only one I'm worried about because, while all the files for all the other mods are readable after I export them, I still can't open or read this one even after exporting it into its own folder and putting that folder in override. (But the fact that I could make a second "unzipped" folder with it is good news, right?). I also won't know if it'll work until the end of the game. I guess the good news is I can seek a different mod that'll let me put a high tier Fang directly into my inventory if this one doesn't work, so there's a silver lining.

Thank you so much for trying to help Tchos, I'm really sorry I wasn't helpful about asking for help.

Thank you for your input as well MerAnne and EmilyTea. ^^

I will say this though Tchos, your advice saved me from buying a complete version of WinZip. I was so sad and frustrated I was tempted to just buy a complete version, but your advice to stick with 7zip stayed my wallet. I don't really have any need of WinZip besides these handfuls of mods, so I'd be really upset if I bought a $25 program for a $15 game, and one I wouldn't have needed at that. So you did help there, thank you. =)

Glad to hear you've got the mods working, and that you didn't have to buy WinZip.  :)
