Replaying this lovely game (Mass Effect 1) again this time to get achievements. Specifically I'm trying to get the one where you have to use a certain power 75 times. My question is does Shepard have to be the one to use them or can squad members use them as well?

AFAIK, Shepard has to use the power.

Shepard has to be the one using the power for it to count against the achievement. Same with killing enemies with a specific weapon to unlock the weapon achievements.

Only if Shepard uses the power.

You have to play as an adept to use singularity. Adepts also have all of the biotic powers.

You have to play as a soldier to use assault rifles effectively. Soldiers also have all of the weapons training.

Engineer doesn't have any unique tech powers, however they have all of the tech powers.

So for best results do an adept play through, soldier play through and engineer play through.

In each play through make sure you have the same two squad mates in every mission.

These particular achievements are poorly designed.

They discourage people from playing as vanguard, sentinel and infiltrators.

They also discourage people changing their squad mates.

There is an upside to this, however: you find out more about the NPC if you take them on every mission. I discovered that Tali was not the sweet and innocent girl I first thought after getting the Quarian ally achievement. I found out she could be rather ruthless.

Same here. If not for the achievements, I would probably never have had Ash on the team, or Wrex and Liara as well, simply because I like to have the other characters around me more :)

But it was a good experience! And now I'll probably switch around more often, too. Different setups for my different Shepards etc to maximize the banter. Luckily I still have to play another Soldier playthrough and then also try out Sentinel, Vanguard and Infiltrator, plenty of chances to take various team mates :D

For me electronics and decryption are a must have in any squad. At least one squad mate should have these.

The way I see it, in terms of squad mates there are only 3 must haves.

Kaidan, Tali and Garrus.  This is for Shepard's who are Soldiers, Adepts and Vanguards.

If you are an Engineer, an Infiltrator or Sentinel that is not too much of an issue.

If Shepard is not one of the tech classes, you could take decryption as a bonus skill and then bring Liara for her electronics.

If you care about balanced squads. Then here is a way to get all 6 characters in three playthroughs.

Vanguard Shepard with Wrex and Tali

Sentinel Shepard with Kaidan and Ashley

Infiltrator Shepard with Garrus and Liara

In terms of skill related achievements, the only ones missing are: singularity and assault rifles.

Well since this discussion has shifted to talking about all achievements...

1. For power and weapon achievements, you do not actually need to complete the game to get the achievements:

a. Start a Soldier playthrough. At some point, save your game during a mission. Kill enemies with a gun, then reload the save. Repeat until you get all weapon achievements. You may want to save some of your points before making the save so you can put them into the weapon talents; helps for Sniper Rifle and Assault Rifle stability, Marksman for Pistols.

Note that you do not actually need the weapon talent to get credit for the kill. So you can kill with an Assault Rifle, Shotgun, or Sniper Rifle on a class that does not have that weapon skill and still get credit for it towards the achievement. Note that without a weapon talent tree, you cannot scope down the weapon.

b. Start an Adept Playthrough. At some point, make a save during a mission. Use a few powers on the mission, then reload the save. Repeat until you get all biotic power achievements. Save a lot of your points before making the save so you can put them into your biotic talents.

Note that I think you actually need to hit enemies with Lift, Throw, Singularity, Stasis, and Warp to get the achievements; I am not 100% positive about that, but I do recommend hitting enemies with your powers to avoid wasting your time. Barrier works on Shepard so you just have to activate it.

c. Start an Engineer playthrough. At some point, make a save during a mission. Try to select a mission with both synthetics and organics, or you will have to play two missions. Neural Shock affects only organics, AI Hacking affects only synthetics. Noveria is good; organics in Synthetic Insights office, Geth in the garage and road to Peak 15.

Use a few powers on the mission, then reload the save. Repeat until you get all tech power achievements. Save a lot of your points before making the save so you can put them into your biotic talents.

Note that I think you actually need to hit enemies with your powers to get the achievements. I am not 100% positive about that, but I do recommend hitting enemies with your powers to avoid wasting your time.

For AI Hacking, I recommend maxing it to Master AI Hacking, so you will need about 20 points (12 points for Master AI Hacking, I think 4-8 points to unlock it). Basic AI Hacking only affects Geth Troopers. Not sure what enemies need Advanced AI Hacking. Master AI Hacking will hack just about everything except Geth Primes and Geth Colossus if I recall.

2. For the ally achievements, you will need three playthroughs. Some notes:

a. You cannot get the Kaidan and Ashley ally achievements on the same playthrough (I tried).

b. Tali, Garrus, and Kaidan have both Electronics and Decryption skills for unlocking. Best to split them up with the other allies unless you have unlocking abilities yourself (Engineer, Sentinel, Infiltrator). So something like:

    - Tali and Ashley

    - Garrus and Wrex

    - Kaiden and Liara

You do not actually need to have a mixture of Biotics, Combat, and Tech on a mission, so you can go all combat and tech, or tech and biotic. You will need some tech if you want to unlock stuff, so no non-tech mixture (only biotic and combat) unless you are a Soldier with Decryption and have Liara with Electronics.

3. Power Gamer: complete one playthrough (level 50). Extreme Power Gamer (level 60).

This will require a minimum two playthroughs. You cannot reach level 60 in one playthrough without modding/cheating/using the command console on PC. So you will need to import a level 50 character to get the Extreme Power Gamer achievement.

Note that killing in the Mako has a -50% XP penalty. So you must kill all enemies outside the Mako to maaximize your XP. Note that XP for kills is given only on kills, so you can damage enemies with the Mako first before stepping out and landing the killing shot, which is good for enemies like Thresher Maws and Colossus, and Armatures.

XP is also given for completing assignments, including using Charm/Intimidate. Using Charm/Intimidate will grant you the same XP as it would to kill the same enemies, so you do not need to worry about losing XP if you persuade (Charm/Intimidate) or kill instead of persuading.

If you are completely (or mostly) Paragon or Renegade you will get 4 free Paragon and Renegade points during a playthrough. You get 1 Charm and 1 Intimidate point for becoming a Spectre. You get another 1 free point for filling 10%, 25%, and then 75% of your Paragon/Renegade Bar, for a total of 4 free Charm/Intimidate points in a playthrough.

If you played partial playthroughs of Soldier, Engineer, and Adept to get your weapon and power achievements, and do not have ally achievements, you can play 3 playthroughs of the same Shepard to unlock all six ally achievements, get to level 60, and never spend any points into Charm and Intimidate.

3. Paramor achievement: romance Kaidan as a female Shepard, romance Ashley as a male Shepard, or romance Liara as either a male or female Shepard.

I have tried using weapons I'm not trained in.

Not fun. Unless you're right in the face of the foe the weapon is really unreliable.

Probably not so much an issue with shotguns since you have to be right in the face of the enemy anyway.

Good advice on the Mako. That is useful.

Yeah I don't like doing 10% of a play through just to obtain some achievements.

I like to complete what I start.

Then there's only one thing to do. Play the games over and over :D

At least that's what I'm doing. I am on my 3rd run currently and still haven't gotten all achievements in ME1. But that's fine, eventually I will have them, if you don't necessarily want to rush it, then just take your time.

I have 2 achievements left and will do them with an imported Soldier character once I'm finished with my current run :)

You can use animals for the weapon cheevos - such as the space beetles on Ontarom. Easy even for a sniper rifle.

No. Because I couldn't find that cow.

I don't know which planet it is on.

I don't know which precise location of that map it's on either.
