When I was just out of college, I talked to my dad one day and he told me he was flying back home from work travel and the girl he sat next to was, randomly, a friend of a friend, who was a girl I'd met a number of times through mutual acquaintances. She heard my dad's last name and asked if we were related. She then went on to tell my dad about how she used to have such a big crush on me when we were younger and wished I had asked her out before (she was engaged now). My dad got a pretty big kick out of it, but I was pretty floored that this pretty girl I hadn't even spent that much time with had such a big crush on me. I'm far from a good looking guy - average at best (just look through the pic thread).
The point is that there are girls (or guys) out there who would say yes to a coffee and conversation with you. Just talking with a stranger we find attractive is not nearly as hard as we imagine it in our heads. The best thing you can do is ask someone out for a quick coffee or bite to eat... and maybe even get shot down. Getting shot down is the best thing imaginable if you force yourself to brush it off and ask someone else. It's like getting a shot - once it happens, you realize it's not so bad.
The fear of someone saying "no" shouldn't ever have such a tight grip on your life that you never even ask in the first place.
