Thinking of making Cole an archer, getitng kind of sick of Sara and have played Verric to death.  Will he make a good archer>  I know the game default is dual blades.  Any advice?

I used him as an archer in one of my playthroughs. He did very well. This was on nightmare mode.

If I was to do another playthrough with him the whole time, I would use him as an archer again.

Because I have no use for a DW rogue in my parties (ai can't handle it and they get in the way of the warrior... the one exception has been my DW Tempest inq...) Cole was defaulted into an archer assassin... I never did settle upon a single build for him like I did with sara and varric. All in all the lockpicker did as well as can be expected from any of them.

Assassin does just fine as archer. Archer Cole is a "must-have" party member given how amazing Mark of Death is against tough enemies. Only time I use someone else is Sera when I play an Artificer and want faster cooldowns (FoL crits several times)

Unless you want to micromanage him a lot on Nightmare, making sure that he's got both a mage to keep a barrier on him, as well loading him up with enchanted gear that gives him guard on hit and heal on kills, he's part of why Nightmare difficulty earns it's name when it comes to him, because it's a nightmare to keep him alive as the AI does not know how to use dual-daggers properly.

Even with all the enchanted gear to give him more survivability while using dual daggers, he's still an extremely squishy glass-cannon that can quckly get taken down if you take your eye of him for too long.

So yeah, it's a lot easier to make him into an archer on the higher difficulties, especially since Assassin Archer is extremely overpowered.

Archer Cole for the win, especiilay because bows can give higher Critical Damage than Daggers.

He's an assassin. He'll tear it up as an archer.

(Even though I think it's weird.)

I don't trust AI with dual dagger. So he's always archer for me. Makes him a sniper, which is kind of cool, I guess.

Yeah he will do better as an archer if you are lazy.  Assassin/archers are overpowered when played by YOU.  Sera will do more dps though; in my experience.  However if you want to experiment with him as a natural DW, and you should try it, he will annihilate enemies.  The trick is micro management.  Send Cole after casters or archers on the outside of combat and he will take them down very quickly.  Never let him fight in the middle of the fray.  But if you manage him properly he will take out pesky mobs post haste.  Interestingly enough I found Cole to be better vs dragons as DW.  He just requires an item with guard on hit.  Give him another item with Fade Cloak and it is GG.

The trick is to equip him properly.  Get the dagger schematics from Hissing Wastes and he is a beast.

Even if Cole is an archer Sera is a better bet as she can survive due to her specialization.  She will also do more damage over time.

I always respec Cole into an archer when I use him as my rogue. Assassin works extremely well for an archer and the AI handles DW rogues very badly. So if you want him as a DW rogue, your only choice is to continually micromanage him and have a mage spam barrier over him so combat will be very stop/start. With archer, you can let the combat flow a little more, only pausing when you need to make adjustments (like pulling those dang range characters out of melee range).

I do not even use Cole. If I want an archer assassin, I would play an archer Inquisitor.
