Yeah take it under water so the mako can be used as a sub marine would be cool,
And just think we travel all the worlds on foot, but we can have all the worlds underwater too so its double the exsploration.

A land dwelling race that is short, chubby, blue, and fast. Their predator is a circular humanoid with long skinny legs who has long facial hair but no hair on its head

Ok, this is just off the top of my head and it's really far our there, so just bear with me for the fun of it here:

Name: Tiel'Senai

Background: Basically, the premise of this race is: What if a plant would develop intelligence? At the same time, it's kind of a mischievous nod to the catalyst and the reapers as it is kind of the antithesis of the Leviathans' predictions (although that wasn't intentional and just occured to me after I came up with the concept). So here is the deal:

On the planet Tiel (pronounced Tee-al) lived a fairly advanced but run o' the mill bipedal species in Andromeda, who didn't have eezo in their system and as such, never developed interstellar travel but they still advanced and colonized their solar system. They also had the so called Senai plant on their planet, which was very highly reactive to outside stimuli, due to a equivalent of a rudimentary nervous system. Plus, it had a bunch of very agile extremities. With these, the plant could even catch small animals in it's surroundings and hold them, until they starved. The decomposing animal would enrich the soil around the plant with nutrients, allowing it to prosper.

Trying to create a cheap labor force, a bunch of genetic engineers of the Tiel altered the plant, to advance its usefulness. They made it respond to certain chemical stimuli in such a manner that the plants could be "trained" to perform certain tasks with their Philopodia. These tasks started out to be simple and repetitive but the scientists made the reactivity of the plants ever more advanced until at some point, thes Senai became sapient. At this point, they were used in every aspect of life of the Tiel and when they realized, that they were not allowed to reproduce freely but that they were tightly controlled, the Senai fell back on their original instincts (i.e. to kill animals) and they drove the Tiel to extinction.

At this point, the plants had been "designed" to interact with and use the humanoid technology, including computers, factories and even space ships. So in order to get an idea of the visual style, imagine an overgrown city but with all the infrastructure and technology beneath perfectly intact and maintained. All of this happened a few hundred years before we ever get to see them, it's ancient history. By the way, the Senai don't just use what the Tiel left behind but they research develop and construct new technologies and devices of their own. THey have inventors, engineers and scientists and in fact, while they do not posses ME technology by the time we meet them, their genetic engineering background is extremely advanced.

As the Tiel'Senai are rooted plants, their "psychology" is very much determined by that fact. In their mind every individual has it's determined place and function (they don't even have those two words but just one, which means both) in society from birth to death. To them, bipedal species seem jumpy, unsteady and unpredictable. By the way, they procreate by "spitting" a single spore form one of their extremities, which they can target with high accuracy. Therefore, the "parent" determines the place and function of its offspring. This gives them an interesting social structure. Parents will try and get their spores in positions where they have stations that are regarded "high" on the social hierarchy (such as controlling a ship's main computer vs. just handing over goods from one neighbor to another). Shortly after a new spore settles, the plant can suppress growth of another in it's vicinity but of two spores settle at about the same time, there will be fight for nutrients and light exposure and eventually one will win. But since every individual plant can only spit its spores within a certain radius around itself, there is sort of a hereditary system in place, with "families" of high station vs. those in socially low places, feuding "clans" in close proximity and such. There is no hive mind, every Senai is an individual, although of course, their understanding of what that word means differs from ours.

Why are there no plants in "mobile flower pots" you may ask? Well, this is because the plants communicate with each other through chemical signals. While they grow, they become attuned to the signals of their neighbors, so once taken out of their environment, they wouldn't be able to communicate anymore. There are transmitters, which can send signals through space and receivers can revert these signals back into the appropriate chemicals (allowing long range communication without direct contact as would be needed for space travel) but even those receivers need attuned plants to relay the signal back to their colony. So mobile Senai are not really an option.

Now, while their origins may be a bit "anti-animalistic" (they killed all the Tiel after all), they are not inherently hostile towards other species. They have developed further by the time we make first contact. And once the language barrier is broken (with translators that can interpret the chemical signals of certain Senai, called Ambassadors for lack of a better term), we'll find out that they have a fairly rich, though alien culture, including such advanced and abstract concepts as philosophy and religion. For example, they call themselves the Tiel'Senai because they fully acknowledge the role, the Tiel have played in their uplifting to sentience.

So, that's as far as I have gotten in the last 10 minutes. What do you think? Interesting concept or just too wacky and implausible?

I've been thinking about this, having trouble of trying to come up with a race that isn't typical of fantasy novels or science fiction novels.

Maybe I can help.

The real trick is most designs are typical because they are humanocentric. What can you make that is very inhuman in design, but practical and somewhat playable?

So having a head and two arms with hands, you kind of need. The rest of the design though is all in the air. Kind of like how we saw a Hanar holding guns in Blasto, yes it's played for laughs but it's plausible to see a Hanar in action now. Same with Volus after the multiplayer.

You can then go into the specifics of their biology. If you have something more insectoid, how do they talk? If they are more amorphous, what can you do to give them a "form" of some sort? Are they carbon-based? Silicon-based? Helium-based? All of that can be asked, and can influence their design.

That kind of is the challenge. One guy who ive seen do this before made these guys, the Birrin by artist Alex Reiss.

Right off the bat, it's a sentient species in crisis, you got police and violent acts going on at the same time. What makes it alien is how non-human the structure of their bodies are; it's a whole different species which is an amalgam of animals we see, but completely new physiology and culture, that is tailored to their physiology.

I fully admit when designing a bunch of aliens myself, its difficult to make them all this kind of alien, as humanocentric solves a lot of problems of their morphology. But it is possible, it just takes time. You need to start with an idea first.

Thanks, I will go to the drawing board.  I've always created my own characters with backstory (for DnD and RP purposes, I have several ME related characters I am dying to use for RP on BSN). But never a race.  This will be challenging for me!

Typically, Sci-Fi Races fall under a few trope-tastic categories:

Rubber Forehead Aliens are essentially humans with 'extra bits' added. Think Asari.

Humanoid Aliens follow the 'human shape' but are clearly otherwise. Think Batarians and Drell. Lesser Extent Quarians, Turians, and Salarians.

Petting Zoo People are aliens that are similar to and based off of Earth's animals. How much they are Animals-to-Humans can be judged on this scale. Krogan fit down here more than elsewhere, but still overlap with the above.

Intelligent Gerbils are a form of the above, essentially animals that think like people but otherwise don't follow the humanoid frame.

Starfish Aliens are aliens that don't follow the standard human shape and can wildly vary from example to example.

----------------------

Also of note, the Volus are not Carbon-based like humans are. They are actually Ammonia-based, so who knows what they look like under those suits! The point is, don't be afraid to dance outside the norm!

How about the Thri-Kreen from DnD? (But with two arms for consistency with other bipedal races)

WE can pull a lot of sources for alien beings and they would still come out as insectoid or human-like.

Heck, most of what we see in Star Wars and Star Trek is this by design due to limitations and using human actors of course. My favorite still are the Devaronians, the Devil people.

it is silly in a lot of ways, but in another sense, I can see it as a possibility. Now obviously making them in any game is way too on the nose, and follows the rubber fore-head alien design we kind of see in Mass Effect to an extant.

But still, who wouldn't want a Devaronian in their world. Just don't make deals with them.

So here is another race I made in the milieu of the Myriad Song game which I had the opportunity to work on.

This species is based off of a few different ideas, well, you shall see.

Spoiler

I admit it is a bit out of the box regarding the description, but I figured id share with you how I tend to write alien beings as of late.

I hope you enjoy.

Reapers: But everyone knows that AI always will try you obliterate organic life! Let us save you by killing you! (I'll never understand why the Reapers just didn't sit around, lording over people while being the Anti-AI police or something else equally ridiculous.)

I think Bioware's going to have to tread carefully as to how they make new AI races without making them too human (Ex. EDI) or making them too much like the Geth/Reapers. The only other Real AI we ever really encounter in the series is one we don't encounter. This is the AI that controls and protects the ship housing the Virtual Aliens. All we know is that it went to the Citadel Races for help.
