I'm in my third playthrough and have avoided exploring this area in the last ones because a lot of people have wrote all around that was a big waste of time going there, decided to go this time and see for myself and so far in my opinion, have some of the best side quests and is pretty beautiful, The empty spaces between the interest points didn't bother me as much as I thought it would, did you guys enjoyed this area?

It is not a waste at all, is the only place where you find Venatori and Red Templars working together, it has a long area with pretty cool dwarven ruins, plus is my best source of Spider's poison for the anti-Dragon runes.

I like the region. Doing the quest Tomb of Fairel gives the player some nice schenatics and othe goodies

My favorite map. The blankness of the ground sends your eyes upward to the vast sky. Good, relaxing music too. Plenty of hidden secrets to find. Awesome map, and one of the tougher dragon fights in the game. It's a very well crafted map. There's more variety than you realize at first. Party comments are also a plus.

It's very beautiful. However it feels really disconnected and irrelevant, despite the cool lore bits. But, uh, that goes for most of the DAI maps to be honest.

Of course it was cool. Nights in the desert can be quite chilly and it is night the whole time you are there. However, during the day it is likely to be very hot. You can even requisition sun ointment for your troops.

Yeah, I loved Hissing Wastes-- though I feel a bit of melancholy as I run around exploring it (the music, the barrenness, the lack of life & desolation).  I love the missions that were there, too.

This is one of my favorite missions.  Loot, and also, bringing Bull or Varric around during these missions will allow you to hear some really cool dialogue.  I also like the puzzle type-- trying to determine which lines of the poem were in what order.

Cheers!

I love the Wastes, BUT I see think it is a waste ( :P) that there are no Astrariums in the Wastes.

True, but there were SO many people complaining about this map, I thought at least a bit of it was true, the banter also works pretty well, better than any other place except emprise du lion perhaps

It's big and mostly empty is the complaint I see the most, and I completely agree with it.  It has about the same amount of interesting areas as Crestwood, but it has around 3 to 5  times the space in between those areas.  I feel like it has potential, and I hope maybe one of the dlc's will add something to the area that can take advantage of all that real estate.

The Hissing Wastes is not only a cool zone (with great banter added to the mix) it epitomizes a way-too-seldom mentioned strength of Inquisition: it does not fall prey to the Skyrim syndrome:

What I call the Skyrim Syndrome is Bethesda and it's imitators (*coughUbisoftcough*) habits of creating fairly large overworlds filled it to the brim with "stuff", as if their devs were terrified at the thought of making a game that "feels empty". So you get something like 20 undistinguishable Dwemer ruins, 40 Nord necropolises, 80 caverns, 15 sawmills, 30 windmills built from a handful of over-reused assets and after a while everything blends into a bland pea-souper of unremarkable, unmemorable, interchangeable zones.

Open world games need large empty-zones for two reasons:

First, because if you try to "optimize" your virtual playground's land like you were programming the Disney Land of video games, your open world will start to feel like a God-damned theme park, which dramatically dulls the feeling of discovery and exploration.

Second because if you keep cluttering your maps with "stuff", you waste resources and time that level designers should use to make every location feel unique.

The Hissing Wastes have a nice mood, and that the area's mostly empty is more or less the point. However, it does mean you spend a lot of time just walking. Also, apart from the treasure hunt, the content of the area is not very interesting.

I don't mind the hissing wastes. It's easy to get around as it's just all flat (well mostly). and if you've finished blackwalls quests and bring him, you get some nice dialogue from him about his past a lot. i'm not sure if this is wastes only, but I've only encountered it there.

I loved that region the first time I set eyes on it. Seems like it is finally getting a fair shake here on the BSN, with more people coming out of the woodwork saying they enjoy it for what it is.

For me, it's my late game playground that I can take at exactly the pace I want. The experience and influence rewards are high, the loot is amazing (both random and static), the banter and out of combat speed buff are reliable due to a low level of trash mob spawns, and the scenery and mood are phenomenal. Apparently unlike some who play this game, I don't have a need to be overstimulated at all times while playing.

I think in the early days after release as conventional wisdom was being formed, the design of the Hissing Wastes conveniently fit into the overarching narrative of the predominant complaint about DA:I, i.e. the paucity of the "main plot" and the ubiquity of "irrelevant side quests" (which were usually subsumed in their entirety, fallaciously, under "fetch quests"). Thus its contribution to the game was dismissed.

I hope you continue to seek out new experiences with an open mind.

I loved the map, the only place where I found using mounts actually useful. So loving the night sky and whole color scheme of it with the camp lights dotted there and there.

I didn't like it at first, but it really grew on me. I actually kind of like the emptiness, as it felt appropriate to the sort of environment you were in.
